《Fire and Ice》Chapter 36: What Really Happened

The morning of we all gathered at the field. I thought back to the other impactful moments there, my first time playing baseball with the family, the newborn attack, and now a confrontation with the infamous Volturi.
I stood with my family in human form, the ring suddenly feeling a lot heavier as terrible thoughts formed in my head. Paul was with the others, waiting in wolf form for the signal to join.
Everyone stood next to their family, I stood with Carlisle and Esme. Edward and Bella were on the other side of me, trying to sound optimistic I stated, "I think I want the wedding to be in La Push. I'm sure Sam will lift restrictions so everyone can go."
Carlisle kissed my head softly, "That would be amazing."
"I want you to be the one to marry us," I continued, "And I'd like my brothers to be the one to give me away," Emmett and Edward smiled at me, I frowned missing Jasper.
We could see them before we heard them, their black cloaks stuck out like a sore thumb in the snowy terrain on the other side of the field. There was a lot of them; dozens. Dare I say hundreds. This was a show for them.
"The red coats are coming, the red coats are coming," Garret whispered as we watched them walk in front of us.
The continued, never breaking stride. I immediately caught the sight of the leaders, "They were looking for you and Alice," Edward confirmed making my blood boil.
We could see Irina amongst them, Tanya and Kate clutched each other sadly and I could see the look of shock on their sister's face, like she hadn't expected them to be there.
In the distance we heard the howling, and out came the wolves. Slowly, intimidatingly. They emerged from the forest behind us and joined our ranks. Paul immediately came by my side, nudging me with his head. I smiled down at him feeling more at ease with him near me. Our ranks immediately looked a lot bigger.
Finally, the Volturi ceased their march, lowering their hoods. Carlisle took that as his time to start litigation, He stepped out of our grasp, leaving me and Esme holding onto each other for dear life.
"Aro, let us discuss things as we used to. In a civilized manner," he started.
Aro smiled, his smile sent a chill down my spine, "Fair words Carlisle. But a little out of place, given the battalion you've assembled against us."
"I can promise you, that was never my intent. No laws have been broken."
Caius scoffed, "We see the child and the hybrid! Do not treat us as fools!"
"She is not an immortal!" He exclaimed, "And Cate is no threat. These witnesses can attest to that. Or you can see for yourself," he motioned to Renesmee, "See the flush of human blood in her cheeks. And listen to the countless stories of how Cate has done nothing but protect her family and those she loves."
"Speculation!" Caius objected.
Aro raised his hand to silence him, "I will collect every facet of the truth. With someone more central to this story. Edward," he started, "As the child clings to your newborn mate, I assume you are involved," Reluctantly, Edward looked at his wife and walked forward leaving our ranks to face Aro. Upon facing him Aro immediately gripped Edward's hand. Smiling and glancing back at us, "I'd like to meet them."

Edward gave us an encouraging nod. Bella looked back at me, I separated from Carlisle and Esme joining them. Paul gave a protective growl, I nodded him forward welcoming him to join us. Jake and Paul stood behind us, Bella turned to Emmett who swiftly detached himself from Rosalie and walked on the other side of me. We crossed the invisible barrier between our people and theirs. I grew more on edge as we got closer. In that moment I wished more than anything Jasper was there to ease my nerves.
Aro smiled at Bella, "Young Bella. Immortality becomes you," he admired before laughing at the sound of Renesmee's heartbeat, "I hear her strange heart!" Then he eyed me oddly warmly, "I've heard many things about you, my dear," he extended his hand out.
Bella glanced down at Nessie and I felt it was only fitting I approached him first, she was a child after all, "Aro," I greeted placing my hand in his. I welcomed him into my head, letting him see everything. He saw my whole life, before and after dying. I just hoped what he saw was enough proof I wouldn't hurt any of them.
"You're very much like your mother, but you look like your father." he finally said releasing my hand. I froze, pulling myself back allowing Renesmee to take my spot. She greeted him with grace, making a point to each up to touch his face with no fear, "Magnifico," he whispered in awe before standing up straighter, addressing his people, "Half mortal, half immortal. Conceived and carried by this newborn while she was still human."
"Impossible." Caius uttered.
Aro frowned at him, "You think they fooled me brother?" We slowly retreated back to our people. Jacob and Paul growled at him loudly before following us back.
"Bring the informer forward," Caius waved his hand before facing Irina, "Is that the child you saw?"
She glanced at us sadly before looking at the ground, "I'm not sure."
"Jane-" he quickly prompted only for Irina to exclaim back.
"She's changed. This child is bigger."
"Then your allegation was false."
She restored, "I was right about the hybrid!" Her eyes teared up, "But Cate has always been nothing but kind and protective," she looked back at us, "The Cullens are innocent. I take full responsibility for my mistake," she looked directly at her sisters, "I'm sorry."
Without a word some of the guard stepped toward her, someone lit a torch, "Caius no!" Edward screamed just as Felix and another member tore Irina's arms right off her body.
They lit her on fire and that's when hell broke loose. Kate and Tanya screamed running forward only to be grabbed by some of our own. We had to hold them back from doing something that would kill all of us.
"Blind them!" I hissed to Zafrina.
Immediately they stopped squirming, "Give me my sight back!" Tanya snapped.
Edward whispered to her, "Tanya, this is what they want. If you attack now we all die."
Once they'd calmed down Zafrina released them and their eyes focused again. The Volturi watched, I could tell they were slightly disappointed that was all that happened. In the distance I saw Jane focusing on Edward, and sure enough he started grunting, falling to his knees. Bella immediately stood with her legs shoulder length apart and concentrated. I watched as she pulled her shield far enough from her body to protect not only Edward but our whole group.

Slowly he got to his feet smiling at her. Jane's smirk however disappeared. She looked at me, but I only smiled. Then to anyone else; noticing her power didn't have any effect on us she tried to walk forward only to be held back by her brother Alec. There was silence, they clearly didn't know what to do with themselves.
Carlisle spoke again, "Aro you see there is no law broken here," he put an arm around me warmly, "And you've seen she is no danger to us or our kind."
"Agreed," he said shocking me, "But does it then follow, that there is no danger?" I sighed mentally, there goes his little loophole, "For the first time in our history we are being threatened by weapons that could destroy us. A creature that is stronger than any of us, and a human weapon that is unknown. Maintaining our secret has never been more imperative. In such perilous times, only the known is safe," he nodded, "Only the known is tolerable, and we know nothing of what this child will become, nor what this creature," he eyed me up and down, "will do if she were to be threatened by one of our kind. Will she retaliate on us? She very well has the power to exterminate us as was done to her people. Can we live with such uncertainty?" He shrugged while I tried to keep myself from phasing in anger, "Spare ourselves a fight today, only to die tomorrow."
His people were shaking their heads in disbelief, actually agreeing with his words. Many were looking at me in hatred only making me more heated. Suddenly; I felt myself calming down. I looked up in shock, only one person could do that.
"Alice," Edward whispered upon hearing her thoughts.
Sure enough Jasper and Alice were walking across the field, he sent me a warm and comforting smile as he helped me with my emotions. My anger stripped away and I was just glad they were okay. I wanted to go to them but Carlisle gripped my hand a little harder, keeping me by his side.
Aro, clearly pleased his prized possession was here, smiled widely, "Alice!" They walked right to the Volturi only to be held back by some of the guard, "My dear, dear Alice, we're so glad you're here after all."
"I have evidence the child nor Cate will be a risk to our kind!" She told him, extending her hand to him, "Let me show you."
"Brother?" Caius warned, clearly not liking the turn that was going to be taken, whereas Aro welcoming let Alice pass and took her hand in his.
There was a long and eerie silence as we waited to see what would happen, in that moment only Aro, Alice, and Edward knew what was being shared. The rest of us watched with curiosity. Finally, Alice spoke, "Now you know, that's your future," she tilted her head, "Unless you decide on another course."
Caius stepped forward, "We cannot alter our course, the child and the hybrid pose a grave threat!"
Aro sent his brother a look, Edward spoke up, "But what if you were sure they could remain concealed from the human world? Could we leave in peace?"
"Of course but that cannot be known!" Caius answered.
Alice and Edward exchanged smiled, "Actually it can."
From the forest walked three people, one of which I recognized immediately, "Beth?" I whispered shocked. She turned to me and smiled. The other two were unknown to me but she seemed mighty close to the man. He was accompanied by another woman with large curly hair, the both of them gave me tribal vibes but it was very unlike what I'd known and grown up with. I wondered how Beth ever met them. I'd hadn't even thought about her since the day I'd come home. Beth had left Alaska a year before, wanting to move somewhere down south. I'd forgotten. Alice brought me back to the present.
"I'd been searching for witnesses of my own. The Ticuna tribe of Brazil. And looks like I'd killed two birds with one stone," Aro looked at her confused, "She is also one of the last remaining members of the Yuit tribe. And another hybrid."
I looked at Beth shocked, she was never even a werewolf back home!
"We have enough witnesses-" Caius snapped only to be interrupted by Aro.
"Let them speak brother."
The man, leaned forward grabbing everyone's attention, "I am half human. Half vampire. Like the child. A vampire seduced my mother who died giving birth to me. My aunt Huilen, raised me as her own," the woman on his side looked at him kindly, I saw her eyes were that familiar red color, "I made her immortal."
"How old are you?" Bella asked, we all wondered the same thing, he looked mature enough that we wondered if we would still get enough time with Renesmee.
He smiled at us knowingly, "One hundred and fifty years."
"At what age did you reach maturity?" Aro wondered.
"I became full grown seven years after my birth. I have not changed since then."
"And your diet?"
"Blood. Human food. I can survive on either."
Marcus looked at him in wonder, "These children are much like us."
"Regardless, the Cullens still have a hybrid and have been consorting with werewolves. Our natural enemies!" Caius spoke determined to get some kind of damage done.
Beth stepped forward, "My whole tribe was murdered," she looked back at me, "Our tribe," she corrected, "I'd been living in Mexico for a year when I decided to go back to visit, only to find destruction and to learn everyone was dead. I had not known I had the werewolf gene until then. I left again, this time going to Brazil, where I met Nahuel. He knew what I was, and he changed me into a hybrid. We've been together ever since. To this day I have never killed any vampire, and continue to live in peace with both humans and immortals alike. Hybrids are unable to procreate," she gave me a sad smile, "We are the last of our kind."
Silence, then Aro looked at us softly and turned to his people, "Dear ones. There is no danger here. We will not fight today," immediately his guard turned and started retreating, followed by their witnesses until only he remained. He turned back to us one last time, "Such a prize," we heard him whisper before following his people away. Hopefully for a very long time.
Vladimir and Stefan watched them angrily, "We have them on the run, now is the time to attack!"
"Not today," Carlisle patted his shoulder coming back to me and Esme giving us both a hug.
Stefan shouted, "You're all fools! The Volturi might be gone. But they will never forgive what happened here."
But none of us cared, we all smiled at our loved ones hugging them close. I'd noticed Paul had phased back into his clothes and brought me into a tight hug, kissing me lovingly. Vladimir and Stefan left leaving the rest of us to our people. The wolves howled victoriously into the bright sky, they may not have gotten to fight any vampires, but we knew they were just glad it ended the way it had.
Paul held me at arms length, eyeing me up and down, "Guess now you can't get out of marrying me," he sighed.
"I guess I'm stuck with you now huh?" I smiled earning laughter from everyone else.

Updates once a week whenever I have time. Cross-posted on Wattpad and Scribble Hub. The CBMokedi cover will return! Excerpt: She looked down at him again. Young. Healthy, from what she could see, except for the wound that was killing him. He was handsome in a way that suggested a life of wealth and plenty. She did not think he had ever starved. Someone important. Her shadow fell across him, and he frowned. Blearily, he opened his eyes. They were amber and bright, even as he lay dying in the dirt. She could feel his soul, blazing inside of him like a fire refusing to die even as his body began to fail. He met her gaze, eyes widening in what she guessed was surprise—or shock. But he never looked away, staring up at her as though transfixed. Ba’an made her decision. She raised her hand and covered his eyes. In another moment, a murder of crows cawed as they took wing. The man and woman were gone from the road, leaving only the dead staring up into the sky. Note: This is a high-fantasy set in a low-magic world. The first book is largely character-driven and we really only hit the real plot in Book II, so if you're not fond of long epic yarns you ought to skip this one. I also don't include trigger warnings, but mind the "traumatizing content" tag--all societies minus one practice slavery and the world is indeed, rather grim!
