《Fire and Ice》Chapter 37: What almost happened

We'd said goodbye to our friends. Paul and I took a bit longer saying bye to Ben, having grown close to him over the time he'd been with us, "You must come visit me," he pleaded.
We smiled, "Well we do need a honeymoon destination, think we can stay with you?" Paul joked.
"It would be my pleasure," he nodded hugging us both before leaving.
I turned and saw Beth walking with Nahuel and his aunt, "I guess you're heading back now?" I gave a small frown.
"Only for a little while," she promised grabbing my hand kindly, "We'll be back for a certain wedding," she teased before hugging me tightly. She hugged Paul before grabbing Nahuel's hand lovingly and they went to say bye to Bella and Renesmee.
~
A month later, once everything had calmed down, I curiously asked Alice what she had shown Aro that day in the field. I wanted to know what might've happened
"It's not very happy," she'd told me.
"Please?" I pleaded, everyone had gone hunting and Paul went to grab his things to officially move in to the Cullen house. It was just the two of us.
She sighed, "Alright," surprisingly, she looked right at me and I felt myself gasp as I was taken back;
Aro didn't care what Alice showed her in the vision, she ripped away her hand from his, "It doesn't matter what I show you! Even when you see, you still won't change your decision," she turned to me and Bella, "Now."
Bella had quickly mounted Renesmee onto Jacob's lap, "Take care of my daughter," she whispered. He nodded to her before running away, never looking back. She looked at me, expecting me to shift and leave with Paul, but I shook my head. I was not going to leave my family.
Aro angrily ordered someone to follow them, but Alice bought them a few more seconds by roundhouse kicking Aro, leaving him souring through the air landing in the back of his army. She was quickly grabbed by members of the guard and we all tensed the way they held her, much like they'd grabbed Irina moments prior.
"Take her away," he ordered.
"LET HER GO!" Carlisle screamed, running after them. We all watched in horror as Aro ran toward Carlisle. The two of them facing off. Jumping in the air in unison no one knew what happened until they'd reached the ground. And Aro was holding Carlisle's head in his hand.

Esme covered her mouth to hide her scream whereas I felt a part of me died as I roared in horror. Everyone had a different look of shock or horror on their faces. Aro just smirked at us, while his people burned Carlisle's body making it impossible to bring him back. That started an uproar as everyone of us charged. As I ran I ripped through my clothes not missing a step as my paws thudded on the floor.
I snarled loudly, signaling the wolves to charge. This fight was vastly different than fighting the newborns, these were all older and wiser vampires who knew how to defend themselves. I was fighting a pair of vampires when I saw Alec run past me to Bella, who was standing still, shielding one of our own. At first I paid no attention to who it was she was shielding, only running to her when Alec tackled her to the ground. I got her off of him but the second I'd heard Alice scream I felt a pang through my chest. Taking a moment, I looked over to where Bella had been looking and a cry escaped my lips.
Emmett was quick to take care of him. Good. Then I'd heard something heartwrenching;
"HELP ME!"
It was Seth. Looking around after beheading another bloodsucker I saw Jane starring him down. He'd started writhing in pain, I tried to get to him, but the other one already had his arms around him. I heard the crunch, I saw the light leave his eyes. And I felt Leah's pain when she saw it through my eyes.
He thought before going silent. Leah howled in grief into the sky. I joined her, Seth. He was a goof ball. He was a kid. And they killed him. I started going on overdrive, attacking anyone in a black cloak. But we were quickly being overpowered.
There was way more of them than there were of us. I'd had four on me, trying to pin me down, but I wasn't giving up too easily. It was just a lot harder to get out of. Suddenly, we felt the earth move; and no, not in some dumb metaphorical way. The earth literally shook and we all froze as a big trench opened up. Many of them fell into the trench as it opened, our people were smart enough to use it to our advantage. Using it as a distraction I shoved the vampires off of me and into the fire filled hole.

Paul had managed to get back to me huffing, "Are you-"
His thought was interrupted by Leah who was fighting off her vampires and showed us an image of Esme being such on the edge with a member of the guard clinging to her back, "I got it!" She screamed running with them still on her back to get to Esme. Leah grabbed the vampire clinging to her and shoved him off, leaving her to fall with them.
I screamed, I could feel her fear but she told me;
We were loosing too many people. I looked around and that's when I saw her. Alice and I exchanged knowing looks before advancing. Jane tried to stop us but I could feel the shield following us. Fear was evidence on her face, knowing she was powerless against us she turned and ran like the coward she really is. Alice got to her, grabbing her by the throat and slowly bringing her to me. I licked my lips slowly stalking towards her.
She watched me with fear as Alice threw her at my feet. I lunged, ripping her to pieces and enjoying every minute of it. I was starting to feel like maybe we would get out of here. We'd already lost so many, but they'd lost people too. I looked over at Aro who'd just witnessed me tearing up his favorite weapon.
"Guess he doesn't want me as a guard dog anymore." I shrugged mentally. I could hear Paul laughing in my head.
"Good one Ca-"
I heard him freeze and Immediately looked around for my silver wolf. I'd found him with Felix. He'd had the upper hand. But he stopped to laugh when he'd heard me, and that's when Felix snapped his neck.
Is that what it felt like for Alice, Esme, everyone who lost their mate, hell did he feel like this when he thought I'd died? Like suddenly you're whole world went dark? I felt my whole body heat up, my throat tighten. I howled into the sky, and heard the thoughts of those we still had, begging me. Pleading with me to keep fighting.
Felix saw me and smirked, I snarled and ran, he met me half way. Yet he seemed to be taken aback by my strength. I'd leaped and tackled him to the ground easily. Stairing into his eyes I saw nothing but a monster; a monster who had taken away my Paul. I let him watch me as I ripped his limbs away, leaving his head for last.
I'd turned away forcing myself not to look at Paul's body. Like Seth, he didn't phase back when he died. And I was actually a little relieved, I thought I would break even more if I saw him in human form laying out in the snow, his neck twisted in the wrong direction.
"CATE!" I snapped in the direction of Edward's voice. He and Bella were facing Aro.
I sprang to their aid. Attacking with nothing but pure rage. I barreled into his legs, tearing them off as I hit him. He fell to the ground helpless and Bella gripped his head in her hands. Edward and I nodded to each other, returning to the fight whilst Bella lit Aro's body on fire.
~
I was brought back and looked at her shocked, "How did you..."
"My abilities seemed to have made a development," she answered solemnly.
"D-did we win?" I wondered, relieved that we'd avoided that bloodbath.
"I'm just glad we don't have to know," she told me.
Whether or not she was telling me the truth, I'll never know. But knowing we got out of there alive gave me comfort.
Just then Paul reentered the house, followed shortly by the others all smiling brightly from their recent feed, "Hey," he kissed my temple lovingly, "What did I miss?"
"Nothing," I smiled holding onto him more dearly know that I know what might've happened, "I love you."
He smiled unbeknownst to him of what I had seen, "I love you too."
Emmett barreled in, "So much love!" He joked sitting between us and wrapping his large arms around our shoulders, "And yet you haven't set a date yet!"
We looked at each other, "How about February tenth?" I asked, Paul smiled, he knew the significance of that day.
Edward smiled when he heard my thoughts, "It was the day they met," he announced to the others.
There was immediately agreement amongst the others and we immediately began official preparation for a wedding that would take place a month later.
