《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[53]

Walking through the aisles between church pews, Emma's eyes scanned the crowd in search of her mother. It wasn't long before she noticed Marissa's hand raising into the air and waving her over, the questioning look in her eyes unmistakeable.
"Let the interrogation commence." Emma grumbled, starting to head in her mother's direction while the two Mikaelsons followed after her.
"Will your mother surprise us with a white oak stake if we sit with you?" Kol questioned, his tone somewhat joking as he noticed Marissa Park's displeased expression once she noticed the two vampires intent on joining her and her daughter.
"No." Emma laughed, but soon enough caught on to an ongoing conversation as they passed by a trio of people. "But just in case, you two head on over. I need a moment." She announced, changing direction and heading off towards her newest targets.
"I'm not letting a hunter stop me from where I'm supposed to be." She overheard Tyler's voice as she approached.
"Also, if he shows his face, I'm gonna kick his ass." Caroline added just as Emma appeared by Stefan's side.
"Hunter? Yay tall, shaved head, gloves on his hands? Kinda handsome if you ignore the fact that he's trying to kill off half the population of this town?" She questioned curiously. If she was hearing them right, there was a new hunter in town and thinking back to the stalker outside the bathroom, it seemed too much of a coincidence.
"Yeah, how do you know that?" Caroline asked in surprise, ignoring the look Tyler gave her as she indirectly agreed with the handsome part of the man's description.
"Just had the pleasure of meeting him." Emma revealed, indirectly giving them the warning that the man who was after Tyler was present in the building. "By the fact that you're alive, I'm assuming he thought you were just a vampire?"
"His gloves are coated in vervain." Tyler explained before sending her a questioning look. "Why do you even care though? You're human and your friends are indestructible at the moment."
"Yes, but it's always nice to know who's up next on the kill list." Emma said like it was the simplest of all facts. Like she was saying she had coffee for breakfast that morning. And before any of them had a chance to really get past that, she was walking away again.
"Where have you been?" Marissa questioned her daughter as soon as Emma came to sit with her own group in the places her mother chose in the end. "And where are your jacket and bag?"
"I, uh, dumped them in Kol's car. Didn't feel like carrying them around." Emma answered simply. Beside her, Kol sent her a questioning look, knowing very well that was a lie. Her only response was a subtle shake of her head, silently telling him she'd explain it all later.
Whether he accepted it or not wasn't really clear as there wasn't a chance to question her further. "Before we begin the Mass, we'd like to open the floor to anyone who would like to share a memory about our late friends on the Town Council. I know that April Young wanted to say a few words about her dad. April? April, are you still here, honey?" Carol Lockwood spoke from the front of the room, but as she called for the girl, there came no response from anywhere in the crowd.
"Is there anyone else who would like to share a recollection or a memory about Pastor Young?" Carol tried again, but no one seemed to be eager to speak kind words about the man who seemed to have blown up twelve people. No surprise there.

But then someone stood up. And, if you asked Emma, that someone was an idiot for doing so. "Come on up, Elena." The mayor smiled at the Gilbert girl as she made her way through the aisle and up the steps.
"She looks like hell." Rebekah whispered silently, and Emma simply nodded her head. She wasn't too surprised by it. After all, something made her believe that for a vampire puking up blood wasn't too great. At best, Elena was just terribly hungry, at worst, she'd repeat her bathroom scenes in front of the whole town within a couple of moments.
"What's wrong with her?" Marissa questioned, concern coming through as they listened to Elena trying to come up with some kind of speech right on the spot.
"She's hungry." It was Kol who answered, noticing the clear signs. If Emma's mum wasn't right there with them, he would have started a bet with Rebekah to see how long the newbie-vampire would last before she lost control.
"Well when's the last time she ate?" Marissa's voice turned disapproving, making Emma hold back a small laugh at her mother's obliviousness.
"Not hungry like you and me, mum. Hungry like Kol and Rebekah." Emma explained simply, watching the colour drain from Marissa's face at the realization.
"And it's no surprise. Can you smell that?" Rebekah questioned her brother, making the two Park women send them curious looks since they couldn't smell anything with their human senses.
"Blood, and lots of it." Kol revealed.
"Human blood? Where?" Marissa's nurse mode was kicking in. Both she and Emma were about to look around, however, the Mikaelsons were quick to stop them. Rebekah grabbed hold of Marissa while Kol gave Emma's knee a gentle squeeze which made her eyes turn to him with a questioning look.
"Damon told us to stop you. It's a test." He shared.
"Whoever starts looking around is exposing themselves as a vampire." Emma concluded. It was quite the smart tactic, she noted, putting it away in her memory if she ever needed to use it.
"He says you're even now." Kol added on, not even bothering to question what that meant. Emma had already made it clear she'd explain everything once they were out of here. But he was growing more curious by the moment.
"Well what do we do then? If someone's bleeding they might need help?" Marissa questioned, obviously wanting to help as soon as she could. It wasn't surprising, considering it was her job.
"Elena's gonna expose herself any moment now." Rebekah noted as the girl's attempts at a speech fully stopped. It was clear from just one look at her face that she could smell the blood, and if she stayed up there much longer, she'd be done for.
"And Damon and me by association." Emma spoke her thoughts out loud before she could stop herself. But it was a simple conclusion. Based on how the hunter had been looking at Damon before, it was clear he was already suspicious of him. If both were revealed as vampires, something told Emma the hunter would easily think she was one too.
Feeling him shift beside her, Emma's eyes looked up to Kol's face. She put the other issues into the back of her mind, starting to ignore Elena as she saw his muscles tense while he stared straight ahead. It made her grab hold of his hand, tracing small patterns into it in an attempt to distract him. From the corner of her eye, she noticed Stefan come up to drag Elena away, but she remained focused on Kol as he looked down at her, somewhat relaxing, but she could still see redness in his eyes.

"Getting Elena off of there doesn't make the blood go away." She spoke up, knowing that all of the vampires in the building were listening in. "Guy's not gonna give up until he gets a shot at someone."
"If we wait too long, whoever is up there could bleed out." Marissa added on as people started to rise to their feet, the singing of the choir filling the air.
"Damon wants to go rip his head off and end it." Rebekah revealed what she was hearing, but Emma quickly shook her head, knowing that wasn't a solution. "And Matt's offered himself as a bloodbag so Elena doesn't murder half the church."
"He'll be exposing more than just himself if the hunter gets away." Emma disagreed openly, focusing only on the Damon part. Her mind kept running a mile a minute, trying to think of a way to get this over with without putting more people in danger. Until she came up with an idea. "He wants a vampire to kill. What if we don't have to risk exposing one to get it to happen?"
"What are you talking about?" Marissa questioned her daughter, confused as she didn't follow where her mind was leading.
"He takes a shot, he has to run, independent of whether he actually killed a vampire or not. Or he exposes himself." She explained, doing her best not to turn her head around and look at Tyler sitting in the back. However, she didn't have to.
"Tyler says he can hear you, and he agrees." Kol shared, Emma nodding her head in approval. The hunter thought Tyler was a vampire, he'd use a wooden steak or bullet or whatever. It would hurt, but it wouldn't kill him. And it would make the hunter abandon his little murder mission.
Whether someone tried to protest the plan, Emma couldn't hear it, and neither Kol nor Rebekah tried to suggest someone was. Not like there was much time to do so either, soon enough, Emma could see Tyler passing their pew as he made his way to the front.
"Excuse me. I just wanted to say a few words about Pastor Young." Tyler suddenly appeared at the microphone, interrupting the choir and making people share odd looks among themselves at the impropriety. But no one tried to stop him as the crowd retook their seats.
"Back in first grade, I was a brat who couldn't be bothered with team sports. Didn't care much about anything that didn't affect me. But he was the one who made me understand how important it is to be part of a team;" Emma held in a small scoff at the poetic nature of Tyler's words, "A community. Of giving yourself up for the sake of..."
The hybrid never got to finish his speech as a shot sounded off, a wooden stake flying through the air and embedding itself in Tyler's chest with such force that his body spun before falling to the floor. Screams spread through the crowd, and chaos ensued as people started to rush for the door. In the mayhem, the vampires too were now allowed to move without raising suspicion.
"Go." Emma gave Kol's hand one last squeeze before releasing it and pushing him gently out into the aisle, moving aside so Rebekah could quickly follow after her brother, obviously unsettled by the amount of blood but having an easier time not showing it.
"I'll come by later." Kol told Emma quickly before he and his sister followed after the mass of people leaving the church in a panic. Emma didn't watch them go, but instead focused on her mother.
"Whoever's bleeding is up there. Go see what you can do." Emma told her mother, pointing to the blood spot which was quite clear on the ceiling.
"What will you be doing?" Marissa was about to go off in the direction of it, but paused to turn and look at her daughter.
"I'll go make sure Tyler isn't idiotic enough to walk out of her like nothing happened." Emma said, turning towards the front of the room where she could see Elena and Stefan leaving Tyler's side and heading off while Emma herself approached.
"I have to call an ambulance." She came up to them just in time to hear the mayor speak.
"Oh, thank god, someone with a brain." Emma muttered just as Caroline questioned the call with confusion in her voice, thinking Carol was just rattled by the sight of her son getting shot and momentarily forgetting nothing can happen to him.
"The whole town watched you get shot. You think no one will question your miraculous recovery if you just walked out of here?" Emma pointed out in a knowing tone, watching as Carol nodded her head in agreement all the while pulling out her phone and stepping away to call 911.
"Where's Elena?" Caroline mumbled, eyes scanning around in search of the vampire that she didn't even notice had left their side. "God, she must've gone to help April."
"April?" Emma questioned, not catching on to what the Pastor's daughter had to do with any of this.
"We think she's the one who's bleeding." Caroline explained.
"You sent a hungry newbie vampire to deal with a bleeding out human?!" Emma questioned in disbelief. "Caroline, my mum is up there!"
"I'll go make sure everything's fine. You stay here." Caroline announced, speeding away while Emma stared after her with a confused look on her face.
"Why am I the one staying with your boyfriend?" She questioned no one in particular considering Caroline had already disappeared, but the question and her tone was enough to make Tyler laugh.
"Because you've been awfully helpful today." He suggested making her send him an unamused look. Sure, if he wants to call suggesting he gets shot helpful, then by all means, she'll take the thanks.
"Enemy of my enemy is my friend, and all that, I guess." She too laughed now as she sat down on the floor next to him, eyes looking up at the indoor balcony overlooking the church altar where she could see her mother helping a dark haired girl, who now looked perfectly healthy, back to her feet.
"Hopefully this guy dies soon so we can all go back to hating each other." Tyler said, the joking tone in his voice very obvious and making Emma laugh again. And she agreed with the sentiment entirely. She couldn't believe their luck. Just as the vampire killing council blows themselves up, a new psycho hunter comes to town. She couldn't help but wonder what threat would be next.
