Mark slouched a little further in his seat, dosing off. Sean watched as his exhausted friend finally shut his eyes after a week of no sleep. Just as he thought it might be a better day, alarms all around the room shot off. The machines started blaring and doctors rushed in. Mark jumped awake, hoping Ethan had awaken, just to be pushed out of the room with Sean. They watched through the window as the doctors and nurses sprinted around, calling out terms the two didn't understand.
"What is happening?" Mark turned to Sean.
"I have no idea!" Sean responded, "Everything seemed to be fine at last for two seconds and now this. I can't even see what is happening because there are too many doctors in the way!"
Tears formed in Mark's eyes as he thought once again about losing his best friend.
"You look exhausted, Mark. You need to sleep," Sean commented.
"For the last time, I am fine. I can't leave. Not now anyway. I need to find out what is happening."
"Mark, please." There was silence in the air.
Before Mark could respond, he collapsed from exhaustion into Sean's arms. Sean dragged him to a bench in the hall and set him down. He then sat next to him and placed Mark's head in his lap, slowly running his fingers through his friend's hair.
A half hour later, one of the doctors informed Sean that Ethan was stable.
"He had had a seizure," the doctor explained," We will have to keep a close watch on him for the next 48 hours, but he should be fine."
Sean thanked him.
"Your friend however," the doctor looked at Mark, "He does not look to well. Since you both have had very little sleep, I suggest you call an Uber to take you home, and try to rest." The doctor walked further down the hallway as Sean pulled out his phone to do just that.

I looked around at the same empty black void that filled my surroundings. I was so tired and sore. As I moved my gaze across the room, I swore I saw his face. I swore I heard his voice. He was getting inside my head. I had become claustrophobic during my time in this box.
His laughter as he watched me struggle in pain rang through my ears. I couldn't breathe. I was going insane.
"He isn't here right now," I reminded myself. But I could shake his voice from my head. My chest felt tight and the box began to shrink. His deep laugh became louder, causing me to cover my ears. It didn't help as the sound was inside my head. I started hyperventilating and tears ran down my face. I wanted to hide in the corner and break this wall at the same exact time.
"LET ME OUT!" I screamed in agony. I beat my hands on the walls, crying, for freedom. I grabbed my chest, as it felt like I was having a heart attack. The world spun and I tried to steady myself, but ended up falling on my face. As I crawled to the corner, I tried to scream, but no sound came out. I was drenched in my own tears.
"PLEASE! PLEASE, JUST LET ME OUT!" I begged and pleaded for the sweet mercy of death. This is all I wanted. I stood up, but didn't make it far as I started convulsing and falling in and out of consciousness. What was happening? This wasn't just a normal panic attack.
"Please let this be the end," I whispered to the gods above, if there were any, before finally falling unconscious.

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.
