I know they were together in real life, but if you read into them. They didn't exactly work well.
I have mixed emotions about it because it's commonly used in Hamgelica fanfic and he's kind of painted as this, innocent, selfless, squeaky, little angel and John really wasn't that. If anything he was the exact opposite.
