《Hex [h.s]》Chapter Thirty-six

The hospital hall was emptying slowly, since it's already around ten. A few patients were escorted to their designated rooms by their nurses. But what confuses me, is that the patients, or even the hospital staff, weren't acting weird like those people back at the mall. They all acted, naturally. Normally. This made me wonder, was my mind stable around that time? After all, Harry must've took my sanity that time.
Dad went to buy himself coffee, while here I am, sitting awkwardly beside my mom. Even in my blurry state, I can see her looking at me at the corner of my eye. Her hands shaking nervously on her lap. I was facing the wall, trying to avoid her, when the door opened. Out came a woman, a doctor, by the looks of her uniform. A long lab coat, her face I can't distinguish properly.
"Miss Mackenzie?" She called, and I stood up. "Yes? That's me." I answered. "Come in please." She instructed, a nurse suddenly appeared out of nowhere and gave me her unwanted help, when I don't need her help since I can see. My vision is like crossing your eyes, or you are near sighted, maybe I am near sighted?
"So, Miss Mackenzie." The doctor spoke, interuppting my train of thought, "When did this 'blurry sight' of yours start to occur?" She asks, sitting on the chair that's behind her desk. "A few days ago." I answered, I squinted my eyes trying to read her name that's engrave in bold silver letters. But all that I could distinguish was the word Dr.
Damn this sight.
"Did you have headaches?" She asks, and I nod. "Any other side effects?" She questions, I nodded again. "My sight is so blurry, like my eyes are covered with gray clouds, I wanna scratch my eyes cause it's so itchy. And, I had a few headaches!" I spoke.
"I see," I can just imagine her looking at me, examining me to find out what is really wrong with my eyes.
"As you can see Dr. Drew," My mom suddenly spoke, so that's the doctor's name. "Lucy, here used to have clear blue eyes. Right now, they are really red!" My mom exclaimed, "Please do something, I don't want my daughter blind."
"Could you tell me what happen before this blurry sight began?"
"Fire. Fire everywhere. Our house was on fire..." I trailed off, but mom urged me to go on by holding my hand and giving it a squeeze. Can't she just let go?
"Our house was set on fire, Dr. Drew." Mom elaborated. "Yes, but I want Lucinda here to do the talking, if you don't mind Mrs. Mackenzie." The doctor spoke calmly, slightly annoyed at mom. I mentally waved my finger in the air.
To my surprise, mom just stayed quiet, she didn't snap or do anything to the doctor. Probably because she's humiliated to do so.
"T-there was an explosion." I mumbled, trying to be serious again, "The house was on fire, and something exploded inside, making me deaf since I was too close to it, and after that, I blacked out."
"Is that so? Well then, your case, is attack of acute angle-closure glaucoma. A few people had this before, since this is a rare kind of glaucoma, Mrs. Mackenzie," She addressed my mom. "I advice that your daughter to eat healthy foods, especially those that are high in vitamin A, and a good rest. I also advice that she shouldn't be exposed to television, especially in a dim light, or anything radioactive." The doctor spoke, it was quite for a moment, before the blurry figure of the doctor gave my mom a piece of paper. Probably medication.

"I recommend this medicine Mrs. Mackenzie, to sped up her recovery from this eye diesease."
"Is there was chance, that Lucinda will be blind?" My mom asked, startling me with her question.
Silence enveloped the room, and it made me shiver. Will I? Will I be a blind human? If so, what's gonna happen to me? So many questions swarmed my head before they were interupted when I heard the doctor sigh.
"I will be completely honest with you Mrs. Mackenzie. Yes, there's a chance she will be blind, the only thing we can do is to prevent it, or it will be worst." The doctor solemnly said, "Let's just hope that Lucinda here would be strong and fight it."
"What happens if I can't?" I questioned. "Then, that blurred vision of yours will turn to blindness. You should be thankful it's not yet worse. Along the way, you will have severe eye pain and headache, a red (inflamed) eyes, nausea, vomiting, and blurry vision." The doctor said, describing each and every symptom. "Mrs. Mackenzie, I advice that you should go here every Saturday, for a check up and updates on Lucinda's eyes."
"Sure thing Dr. Drew." Mom spoke, "But, what happens if Lucinda will be blind?"
"Then, she would undergo an eye surgery." Dr. Drew simply answered.
"Thank you Dr. Drew, thank you." Mom spoke in relief. "No need to thank me yet, let's just hope Lucinda here will recover fast." Dr. Drew said and stood up, signaling that the session is over.
I stood up and walked out with mom, but before I got to the door, the nurse again came over to help me, but I polietly turn it down, telling her that I can take care of myself, so she left.
Dad still haven't got back, so mon went to buy the prescribed medicine at the hospital's pharmacy. I stared at the blurred scene in front of me, people's figures passing by. They all seem to be in their own little world.
I sat down, tired of standing up, and waited for dad or mom to come back. Soon, my blurred vision make out a small kid, maybe a boy, since the kid is wearing a red shirt with a car printed on it, walking towards my direction. He seems to be staring at me intently, I sifted on my seat.
The boy stopped walking, now facing me,I decided to do the first move. "Hi kid, what can I do for you?" I asked, but he remained silent. This made me frown a bit, I thought kids were talkative? But maybe his parents taught him not to speak to strangers, if so, why did he walk up to?
This kid is weirding me out, then again, everyone in this town is weird. "Hello, what can I do for you kid?" I tried again, not expecting an answer.
"Are you from around here?" At last, he talked. "Yes, yes I am. I just moved here a couple of few ago." I answered, it was now our fourth week here in Silent Mound, and I'm loving my stay here.
"So, you're a stranger here?" Okay, this kid is getting weirder and his questions are kinda peculiar. I prefer the kid awhile ago who wouldn't talk. I just can't imagine a kid walking up to a stranger and ask questions. Obviously, I am that stranger, but he seems to mean it in a different way.
"In this town?"
He nodded, "Well then, yes. I haven't even tour the whole town yet." He suddenly pointed at my eyes, the tips of his fingers so close. "What happen to your eyes? Why are they sore?"

" I got into an accident." I half-lied, this kid wouldn't understand if I said that I have glaucoma, he would probably ask what it was.
"You're lying."
This made my skin crawl, how did he know I was? Can he read minds? No, that would be silly and non- existent.
But what about Harry? My mind asked, and I wish that name wasn't brought up.
If a demon exist in this town, how much more, a kid that can read people's minds?
The kid got closer 'till his fingers were touching my left cheek. "You're a stranger. Strangers don't last long here." He spoke in a monotone voice, "I suggest you and your family leave this town while you have the chance. Even that demon couldn't save you."
I froze. Before I could ask what the hell he meant he ran away to a woman standing, maybe his mother, and both left the hospital. I sat still, speechless. It seems to me that I have been getting lot of warnings to leave this town, and about a 'red moon', that kid, those lunatics back at the mall, and mostly Harry. All of them gave me different warnings, but I can't seem to follow them. What is wrong with me?
"Lucinda " I turn to see a man, whom I soon recognize as the figure of my dad. "Hey sweerheart, something bothering you? You look like you saw a ghost!" Dad joked, before sitting down beside me.
"Dad, can we leave town? I'm sure there's another town closer here, we could buy a house there, and we could find another hospital for them to examine my eyes-" I rambled when dad held up a hand to stop me.
"Whoah, slow down. What are you talking about?" Dad questions, looking at me with worried eyes, he probably thinks I have gone mental.
"Dad, we have to leave town, strange things have happen here." Dad sigh, which made me frown.
"We can't Lucy."
What the fuck?
"W-what? What do you mean we can't!?" I almost screamed. "Look, I want to leave this town, believe me." He spoke, taking my hand and looking me directly in the eyes. "But we can't. We have to pay for the damage of the house, and the police wants us to stay to find out who is responsible for burning the house down, and a few houses beside it."
This made my blood freeze, "W-what do you mean dad?" I asked, as if I haven't heard him right, but it was clear I did. "They found that the fire was intentionally planned, after seeing a huge hile on the second floor, they knew it came from a huge firecracker, which was illegal, since it caused a few house fires. A few neighbors heard the explosions and that was when the fire started." He explains, which made me sit up straight.
"They think the one who lit the firecracker is responsible for all the lost. On the cellar was an old LPG tank which caused a huge explosion, wrecking the floor above which is the living room." I looked down in shame, it was me.
I gulped, I, Lucinda Mackenzie, is the criminal, who is now wanted, who burned down Harry's house and a few more. I am responsible for all those houses that were destroyed due to my selfish way of getting revenge on Harry, for hurting me. I used to think it was worth it, but now, I regret doing it.
"H-how many houses?"
"Six, seven if the murderer's house is included." He muttered, my head shot up when I heard him speak. "You know that it used to belong to a serial killer?" He surprised me even more when he nodded.
"Your mother told me you've been acting strange, saying that a man, a 'demon' was hurting you. She thought you were crazy, so I searched through the internet, libraries, any sources, for the history of the house."
"What did you find out?"
"That it was a famous killer who used to own the house, he was know in this town, for he killed 20 people. His name was..." He trailed off, trying to remember the name. "His name was..."
"Harry Styles?" I finished, and it was his turn to be surprised. "You knew?" He questions, and I looked away, nervously. "Through internet, I searched and saw the history of the house...and it's owner." Dad placed his hand on my shoulder, making me look at him again.
"Lucinda, is there something I should know about?" He asks, raising an eyebrow. "You know, you could tell me anything sweetheart. I wouldn't judge you." I opened and closed my mouth, trying to get the words out, but before I could, mom showed up.
"Robert, I got the medicine now. Let's go." She spoke, and dad stood up, I followed. Mom held my hand to guide me out of the hospital. I badly want to swat her hand away, but I know dad is just watching, and thank God I haven't.
The warm air hit my face, and I inhaled it once we were out of the building. Mom and dad silently guided me to the car. Dad starts the car and we drove away.
"Where are we going?" I spoke up, curious to where we were heading. "To our new home." Dad smiled, "I sold our house back in Eddleton, so we could buy a new one."
I gaped, "You sold the house back in Eddleton? What happen to our stuff? My stuff?" I questioned, "What happen-"
"Calm down Lucy, we got it all transfered, what you need to worry about is choosing your room." Mom spoke, I mentally glare at her. Who told her she's included in this conversation? I tried to calm down, not to go wild and sassy at her, but it's kinda hard. Especially to the woman whom you trusted, and who broke that trust.
"Why the hell should I worry about my room?" I spat.
"Language, Lucy." Dad scold, "I don't like the tone of your voice either. Just because your mom did something to damage your trust, doesn't mean you can treat her like dirt. She is still your mother."
"I wish she wasn't." I mumbled under my breath, and looked out the car's window. The street lights were a blur, I yawned in boredom. Might as well sleep.
Fuck! I winced when my foot collided with something, I kicked it away from me. I examined the broken ceiling which is now burnt. After escaping those policemen who thought they could catch me, I run back to my house, knowing which way to go.
Here I am, examining my fucking house, that is, if you could still call it one. At the left side, three houses were burned, and at the right were also three.
No point staying here.
As I was about to leave, my sharp eye caught something shiny, which is covered my a burned carpet. I toss the carpet aside, and under it was a gold necklace.
I picked the useless thing up. The pendant was a huge heart, I tried to pry it open, but it wouldn't. I placed it inside my pocket. Maybe later.
My ears picked up an oncoming car, so I became a dark shadow, and watched a familiar SUV passing by. One name came into my mind.
Lucinda.
Without hesitation, I followed the car in, my shadow grabbing the car's shadow under the street lamps. Three minutes passed, the car slowed down. I sped awat and turn back to my original form. I watch with Hawk like eyes as Lucinda's father got out of the car, followed by her mother and Lucinda.
I looked at Lucinda closely, her blurred vision was still present. "Here it is Lucinda! Your new home!" Her father gleamed, but Lucimda didn't smile or say a word. Her mother held her hand as they walk up to the front door. Her dad opened the door and they all walked inside.
I grinned. Even if you hide or run across the world. I will and will always find you Lucinda. If you think I would just let you go, think that I am finished with you, well...
You are so wrong baby.

Together, Orson and Enoa battle a magic-obsessed militia, clash with a host of rivals, and face constant adventure on their journey to find the Dreamside Road. *Updates Monday and Friday The Dreamside Road is now on TopWebFiction! Vote so people know this exists. _____________________________________ NOTE: The Progression tag applies specifically to Enoa. Also, fair warning, that element doesn't enter the story until she begins her studies. Content: Main characters range in age from teenagers to people in their thirties and older, but it will not contain gratuitous violence or explicit sexual content. It also won’t shy away from implication, anything to make this story and its world feel more real. Characters will freely allude to potentially triggering topics, including living with a disability, facing terminal illness, coping with trauma, surviving societal destabilization, and the consequences of bigotry. At its most intense, the Dreamside Road is a hard PG-13. Worldbuilding: This is not a story with a lot of early exposition scenes, conveniently explaining ‘magic systems’ and political dynamics. Readers will learn, progressively, as the characters do. This story/world has a ‘magic system’, or rather, a set of systems, but the effort to quantify and understand the truth of the setting plays a role in the backstory, as well as in some character motivations. In that same vein, not every character has a firm grasp on the nature of their world, and not every piece of dialog from every character should be taken as entirely truthful Worldbuilding. Also, this isn't the softest Sci-fi. There are at least some basic explanations given for various elements, but Royal Road does not give me a spectrum to choose from. Given the choice between hard and soft, let's just say The Dreamside Road won't be cited in any college Physics papers. Setting and Theme: The Dreamside Road walks the line between fantasy and science fiction and deals with finding one’s place in a changing world. Many of the characters in this story are United States natives and the story begins in the United States, my homeland. However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.
