《Lost and Found》Maddie

I woke up, again, somewhere strange. I have to stop doing that. The last thing I remember was seeing Alex in a hospital bed and then my head began throbbing while I was talking to her. Just like it was now. It hurt so badly, and everything was fuzzy I couldn't see any people, anywhere. I wanted my sister. Even with my broken memory, she made me feel safe. She made me feel like everything was okay. The doctors keep on saying that there is nothing wrong with me. There is something wrong with me. I just know it. But what is it? I fell asleep thinking about it.
When I woke up there were doctors once again. They were speaking to me and I got bored and ended up falling asleep with a headache.
The next time that I woke up Maddie was holding my hand asking me to wake up. I smiled. She started giggling.
"Hey. What's up with you Maddie?" Alex said.
"Nothing. Literally nothing. There is nothing "wrong with me"."
We laughed at that. I still found it weird that I was talking to my sister that I had known for my whole life, but now know nothing about her. Weird, huh?
"Hey, so the doctors said that they wanted to run some more tests and then they'll send you home. I am going home to shower and take a nap and I'll see you there. Alright?" she looked at me questioningly.
"It's fine. It's not the end of the world if you leave me for two seconds, bye!" I yelled.
After she left the doctors came in and did some tests on me and put me to sleep so they could do some more tests.
When I woke up I was in my own bed at home. Alex was snoring next to me. It was strangely comforting. I poked her in the side until she woke up giggling, "Stop. It's not funny!"
"Well, then why are you laughing?" I pointed out.
"Whatever. We are making pancakes for breakfast. The drowning them in syrup. Because I honestly don't care how much sugar I eat. Let's get moving lazy butt," she said.

She picked me up and put me in my wheelchair. It had been almost six weeks since the accident. I was getting my casts off next week. I couldn't wait. We made pancakes and had a flour fight and woke everybody up. Pretty soon we had four hangry people waiting for pancakes. Apparently Ruby and some other girl stayed the night to make sure that I was okay. When the pancakes were done we sat down and ate. It was very quiet, nobody was saying anything. But I was bursting with questions inside. I had to at least get the answer to one of them.
"Who are you?" I asked the girl with the blue-framed glasses and the long blue hair. Her face fell.
"Oh, I'm Lucy. I'm Alex's best friend," she replied.
I nodded. Wow. Another person I don't remember and I disappoint.
The rest of breakfast was quiet. Nobody dared say a word. I didn't really care though. I was really tired and I was going to school the next day. I refused not to. I excused myself and just crawled into bed. Mom said that I had a fever and slept for days.
When I finally woke up, I felt good. I stretched and pulled myself into my wheelchair. I went out into the living room and saw my mom.
"Hey, mom!" I said.
"Hey sweetie, get dressed and get something to eat. We are getting your casts off today," she replied.
I whooped and got ready to go. The car ride was a quiet but long one. I just sat there staring out at the snowy landscape and watching the snowflakes fall down. There were so many people outside shoveling snow. They all looked kind of cold. I mean, it was winter. Why would they not be? The car turned off and I looked around. We were there already. Mom helped me out of the car and we went inside.
Mom went up to the desk and checked us in. They took us right back into the rooms.
It was Nurse Sophie this time. I have never heard of her. She went ahead and did all of the normal stuff that nurses do and then she went and got the stuff to cut the casts.

"Are you ready?" she asked.
I nodded.
She began cutting the casts off. I giggled. It kind of tickled. We got the casts off and I got stood up for the first time in weeks. I almost fell. I actually would have if Mom hadn't caught me.
"You haven't walked in weeks. You're going to need a walker of some sort," the nurse said.
I agreed and went and picked one out from the wall in the physical therapy room. One of the ladies that was working there walked up to me, "You are Madelyn, correct?"
I nodded.
"You will be taking some physical therapy to strengthen your legs back up and get you back in tip-top shape," she said fervidly. Possibly a little over the top enthusiastic.
"Okay, that sounds great! When do we start?" I replied with the same enthusiasm.
"Friday at 12:00 pm. How does that sound?"
"It sounds great. I will see you then." I finally understood the whole "fake it 'til you make it" saying.
Using my walker, I hobbled out of the room and out to the car. I opened the door and sat down. My mom took my walker and put it in the trunk of our car. I sat there thinking about Alex and how I was affecting her health, literally. She had to be restrained by the doctors after looking at me. Everybody has got to be worried sick about me. I just wish that that day could have gone differently.
When we got home, I once again hobbled out of the car and into the house.
"Hey hon, get some lunch and then climb in bed and try to get some sleep. You're going to school tomorrow." Mom said.
"Okay," I paused, "What do we even have for food?"
"I don't know, why don't you look around and find out. I'm going to go and take a nap. If you need anything holler for me, alrighty?"
"Sir, yes, sir!" I joked. She laughed and walked away.
I looked in the cupboard for food, there was cereal, bread, peanut butter, and bagels. I grabbed a bagel and hunted in the fridge for some cream cheese. When I found some, I popped the bagel in the toaster and waited. A minute or so later the bagel halves jumped and the toaster dinged. I placed the bagel halves onto a paper towel and spread cream cheese on them. I hobbled to my room with them and sat down on my bed and ate them. I then turned on my TV and watched the news. It started out with some wildfires in California and then switched to the hospital. I paid more attention to it. It then switched to a patient that looked familiar, it was me! The news anchor was saying, "This is 14 year old Madelyn Wright. She was a normal girl leading a normal life. Then one day, she was waiting for her sister at the ice rink and a drunk driver we now know to be, Harris Wiltman, was on his way to hit a 5-year-old, her name is not being released because of her age, when Miss Madelyn bravely pushed her out of the way and as a result, Miss Wright was gravely injured. We recently learned that she has amnesia, she broke her legs, she had to get some stitches, and most recently has had seizures. Doctors say that they can't find anything wrong and that she should be fine. Only time will tell. I know that everybody will be keeping her in our prayers. Next on..."
I stopped listening. I flipped through the stations, most of them had something about me. I am now trending. I fell asleep to that thought and I didn't like it.
