《Baseball Princess》Chapter 14: Memories

"Knock, knock, I'm coming in," Tommy said, slowly opening the door.
"Yay, homework," I said sarcastically.
Tommy threw his backpack on the ground and opened it up. He handed me a few papers.
"Oh, and here's your phone," he added, giving me that, too.
"Wait, why did you have it?" I asked.
"No reason."
I gave up on trying to figure out what the real answer was. I'm way too tired to pursue anything.
The doctors kept me busy all day, from changing bandages to various tests. They asked tons of questions, and had me eat a lot, since I lost a few pounds.
"Where's everyone else?" I asked.
"With Daniel," Tommy replied, lowering his head.
"Of course," I said, my voice squeaking.
"Do you want help with your homework?" Tommy asked, changing the subject.
"Probably."
Tommy spent the next half hour helping me figure everything out. Good thing he's a junior.
The rest of the boys stopped by at seven. Took them long enough.
"Hey, Lins, sorry we can't stay long, but we have homework too, so see you tomorrow," one said. I didn't bother to look up.
"Bye," I said.
I don't care about them seeing Daniel instead. After all, he has more pain than I do. He can suffer.
Lindsey, what the heck are you thinking? I swear, this hospital is slowly driving me insane.
Tommy left around eight. Such a good friend. He said he was going to say hey to Daniel then leave, since he too had homework.
I was about to go to sleep when a nurse came into my room.
"Daniel has requested to see you. And seeing as he can't be transported easily, he was wondering if you'd come to his room."
I didn't hesitate to say yes. Daniel wanting to see me? That's good.
She wheeled me over. I was wearing my sweater again, but my bandages were still very visible. I can't leave all because of those stupid things.
"Hey, Lindsey," Daniel said, once I rolled into the room.
"Hey, Daniel."
"Do you mind helping me remember stuff?" He asked.
"No, not at all. In fact, I would love to."

"First, I want to know more about the relationship we had."
So far, so good. I pulled out my phone, glad I brought it.
"This is when we went to the ice cream place with the team," I said, showing him a picture, "do you have your phone?"
"No, I think my parents do. Why?"
"Ben took the pictures. There was one, where you were looking at me. You said it was your favorite, and you put it as your wallpaper."
"Cool. So we were close?"
I nodded. It will be so hard to get used to this.
"When did we start dating?"
"Officially, it was a Sunday, late April. But we kissed on Friday night, and Mark almost killed you on Saturday," I said, laughing at the memory.
"Wow. Sounds fun," Daniel commented.
"Yeah, we had some good times. So, do you still want to date?" I asked. I kind of don't want to know the answer.
"Lindsey, I'm sorry, but right now is hard for me. Maybe someday, just not now," Daniel replied.
My heart sunk. This car accident was the worst thing to ever happen to me.
"I get it," I said, looking at my casted ankle.
"Don't look so down, you're beautiful. I can kind of see why I dated you. I just wish I knew more about you, and myself," he said, lifting my chin.
I tried to smile, but tears fell down. I'm going to cry my self to dehydration at this rate.
"Thanks," I replied. "I just- Can we kiss? Just once more?"
I'm not sure where that came from, but I'll be okay with it if he says yes.
"Sure," Daniel said.
I held the edge of the bed and stood up. Daniel grabbed my arm with his not-casted hand to keep me from falling back into the wheelchair.
I sat down next to him, and put my arms on his shoulders. Then slowly, yet carefully, I bent down, and kissed him.
I got nothing out of him. I still felt some heat, but he didn't kiss back. I covered up my shock by putting a hand over the bandages and looked in pain.

It did hurt, but not that much. I was a little bit used to it.
"Lindsey, I'm sorry," Daniel said, "do you want to sleep here tonight?"
I think he actually meant that. I nodded, and layed my head on his shoulder. I felt him wince in pain, so I moved a little.
Daniel took the blanket and slid my legs under. Then he wrapped an arm around me, and held me tight.
It felt sincere. Like he wasn't doing it out of pity, he was doing it to be with me.
Daniel turned the lamp off, and I went to sleep.
-
I woke up to a bright glow just a little ways in front of me. Daniel was on my phone.
He was looking at pictures. I turned my head to look at his face. Daniel was crying.
He noticed that I was awake, and then came across the video from his car. Daniel turned to volume up, and pushed play.
I smiled at the screen. Daniel and I were laughing, flirting, and just being happy. I wanted that so bad right now.
It got to the end when we kissed. Watching it, I could see how passionate we were. It's like we were inseperable.
Then the video ended. I wish it was longer or that I took more. They made me happy, and hopefully helped Daniel.
"That's nice," Daniel said. I could feel his chest move as he breathed. It gave me a sense of comfort.
"I hope you're just as funny as you used to be," I said.
"I hope so, too," he replied.
Daniel seemed distant. Like he wasn't sure if he should let his guard down or not.
"You still look sleepy. It's one in the morning," Daniel said.
"Fine, I'll try to go back to sleep," I replied, sinking back into his body.
I hope he gets his memory back. Or at least tries to be with me again.
-
"Hey, Daniel. Is she asleep?"
Mark is here. I opened my eyes a tiny bit and saw that it was just him.
"Yeah," Daniel replied.
"Do you like her again?" Mark asked.
"I'm still trying to figure that out. I mean, she'll be a close friend, at least. I just don't know if I want to date her again," Daniel said.
I kept pretending to be asleep so I could eavesdrop.
"If you don't want to date her, just don't lead her on. Lins has been very upset about the whole situation. And having to stay in this hell-hole isn't helping."
"I won't. She just looked tired, that's all," Daniel said.
Unable to take it any longer, I stretched my arms out, yawned, and said, "Good morning, guys."
"Lins, it's six in the afternoon," Mark said.
"Did I really sleep that long?" I asked.
"Yeah. By the way, they changed your bandages while you were sleeping."
My cheeks turned pink. Daniel must've watched.
"If it makes you feel better, I stopped watching when they started to put the new wrap on," he said.
Mark clenched his jaw, and sat down. This is probably really stressing him out, too.
"Lins, Tommy brought your homework to your room. So if you want help again, I suggest you go now, before he leaves," Mark said.
"Yeesh," I replied, carefully sliding my body off the bed and into the wheelchair.
"I'll be right back," Mark said, realizing that he had to roll me there.
"Are you alright?" I asked him once we left the room.
"No," Mark replied.
"Care to talk about it?"
"I'm mad about Daniel losing his memory."
"But so is everyone else. Why is yours so different?"
"I-I kind of liked that you guys were dating. Like, it was kind of gross, but you were so happy, and he was protective of you. I want you guys to be together again," Mark said.
"Wow. Didn't see that one coming."
We approached my room, and saw Tommy sitting on the couch. The two helped me back into my bed, as if I couldn't do it myself by now.
"Okay, homework," I said, taking it off the table.
"Yeah. Lucky for you, I remember all of this. Let's start with Algebra II," Tommy said.

I realized that far too late, so this story is... weird. It might be light at times, and dark at times, and in all honesty, definitely has dark undertones. Oh, and prepare to be disappointed or pleased by this story; I understand that this story is polarizing, at least. Cover made by: Fei (@Chippy03966650) / Twitter

The Anthology
This is my collection of short stories. I ask what stories would my audience like to read and write whatever they post in the comments. I strive for more than two dimensional characters and I like to make my stories somewhat unique. The first six entries are my experiment to just write without stopping and see what comes out. They can serve as an introduction for the reader to me as a thinker and writer. Although it should be known that the majority of those entries were written in a foggy state of mind. Entry seven is where my short stories begin.
