《Bloodthirsty(KNJ)》6. Dormant

Superintendent Min looked at the board again and sighed. He really looked like he didn't want to be there. He seemed annoyed, but Nari knew it wasn't at her. She hadn't caused any problem for weeks.
"We kept discovering bodies every week for three weeks, but we haven't found any in a month." Soha continued, ignoring his yawning.
Nari almost laughed. Soha was never intimidated by the young man and she didn't hide it. But then again, superintendent Min didn't seem to care.
"That's a good thing, right?" He said in his usual bored tone.
"Or not? What if he is keeping them in his closet? Literally?"
"Not funny." He said looking all serious now.
"I wasn't trying to be, sir."
"Ah, don't call me that. I'm only three years older than you."
"You're still my boss, though."
"Am I? Because you don't act like it."
Nari had a silent laugh but stopped when her gaze met his.
"You're no different, detective Park."
She rolled her eyes at him and he was about to say something when Soha interrupted "so what should I call you?"
"I don't know. Get to the point, I have somewhere I need to be."
"OK, sir. So we think he went dormant." Soha said, emphasizing on the word sir.
He looked at her through narrowed eyes and after a few seconds of silence, he finally said "Or maybe he went away? He could be making victims in another city or country as we speak."
That would make so much sense! Plus, Nari had a bad feeling about all this. They were definitely missing something.
Well, aside from who the criminal was, of course. They needed more information about him, but how would they get it? He never left any fingerprints on the bodies and he didn't get involved with them sexually either. There was no way of getting his DNA.
"Actually," superintendent Min started as he stood up "I don't really believe in that theory."
"What theory?"
"That he traveled all around the world to kill."
"Maybe his job makes him travel a lot?"
"He'd still be more comfortable here, right? Since he is Korean"
"What makes you so sure that he is? He could be a foreigner living in Korea."
"Detective Cha, you seem to have woken up this morning to irritate me."
There was a silence as they were staring at each other. The rest of the team was watching in anticipation. Who would win this staring contest?
"Can you guys feel the amount of sexual tension in the room?" Eungi murmured and the others nodded.
"Maybe if you stopped assuming things, I wouldn't have to irritate you."
"Are you saying that I irritated you first?"
"Yes, sir."
She crossed her arms on her chest and gave him a challenging look. Now everyone was holding their breath.
Would superintendent Min start yelling? Would he just dismiss her as he did everyone else? Yes, the only time he yelled was when Nari almost got them sued.
He never expressed his displeasure by yelling. He just swore in a really harsh tone or just ignored the object of his dissatisfaction. Or, he used his words to hurt. He was good at that. A savage, this mister Min.
But to their surprise, he laughed. "How cute. And I'm bored now so I'll get going."
And he left.
Everyone took a deep breath and started teasing Soha.
"Just date already!" Ji Ho said.

"Or have a one night stand, to release this tension," Eungi added.
"Not funny!" Soha protested.
"Hello everyone!" said a loud voice in the precinct.
They all turned around as a tall, slender young man walked towards the small group. He had a huge smile on his face and Nari's face turned sour.
"You're back," she said in an aggravated tone.
"Hello, kitty" he said as he poked her cheeks.
"Don't call me that, sunbae!"
Hoseok laughed and continued playing with her cheeks.
"Ok, then I will call you puppy. Hey, puppy!"
"No!" She exclaimed. He jumped in surprise and let her go.
"Bad puppy," he said with a pout.
She rolled her eyes and went to sit at her desk while Hoseok was greeting the others. He was the senior inspector of their agency and he had been on leave for 2 weeks.
2 Weeks during which Nari had a peaceful work life, but it was over now wasn't it?
Every time he saw her, he petted her. Literally. He said she looked like a cat, so he always treated her as such! Was it because of her green eyes? Anyway, she did everything in her power to get him to stop, but nothing worked. He never took her seriously.
She got tired of fighting and just let him be. Plus, he was someone she admired because of the way he worked. He was good at reading people so he used that during his interrogations to get what he wanted. It worked every time.
"Puppy!" She heard him call again.
"Does your wife know that you harass your juniors at work?"
"Now you're hurting me, puppy. You haven't seen me in 2 weeks, shouldn't you be excited right now? Didn't you miss me?"
"No, I did not. Let me work, please."
"What a rude cat-"
"I'm not a cat! You know what? I'll tell superintendent Min that you're disturbing my work."
She got up, but his smile grew bigger.
"Oh, my other cat! Let's go, I need to greet him too."
She watched him walk away but didn't follow. Really, no one respected the superintendent in this precinct. How could Hoseok call him a cat?
A few hours later, Nari and Soha were having lunch with the two hot profilers, Jimin and Taehyung. She had called them about the silence of their killer and Jimin suggested they met at lunchtime since he and his colleague had the afternoon off anyway.
But this time, they were meeting outside of the campus for some reason. Nari wasn't complaining, however. They were eating at a very nice restaurant and the men were paying.
"For a whole month? Nothing at all?"
"Not even a missing person's report?" Jimin asked as he swallowed his food.
Taehyung was already done eating and was sipping his wine. Oh, that wine. Nari wanted to taste it so bad, but she was on duty. It was a very expensive one, too. Taehyung must have been rich, seeing that he even dressed in Gucci and all.
"Nope, nothing. We're all confused right now."
"Yeah, me too actually. According to our profile, he is supposed to be active right now."
There was a silence and they all exchanged worried looks. Soha sighed and pushed her empty plate away.
"This is driving me crazy."
"That makes the two of us. The scariest part is he could be piling up bodies right now and we wouldn't know unless he drops them-"
Nari trailed off and suddenly sat up. her eyes were as huge as saucers.

"I think we've had it wrong from the start."
"What do you mean?"
"Just because we found the bodies within a week of interval each doesn't mean that he killed them within a week."
"What-"
"You're saying that he could be keeping more than one victim at a time and dropping them as soon as they die?" Jimin said, interrupting Soha.
Nari nodded and continued "what if there is a hunting phase, then an 'eating' phase and when the 'fridge' is empty, he goes out for another hunt?"
"What you're saying is very disturbing but makes sense at the same time. Ew."
Nari turned to Soha and laughed. "So you understand now?"
"I guess I do. So he kidnaps several girls at a time and keeps them while they are bleeding to death. He then gets rid of one body after another when they're dead."
Everyone nodded at Soha.
"That would also mean that the order in which the bodies were discarded is not necessarily the order in which he kidnapped them," Nari added.
"Right. So what do we do?"
There was another silence. Nari slid her fingers through her hair as Jimin did the same. They exchanged a surprised look and laughed.
"That was weird," said Jimin.
"Yeah, it's a habit of mine I can't seem to shake off."
"Same! Because of that, I always-"
"Wow, you guys are so cute. We could look at you all day." Interrupted Taehyung in a sarcastic tone.
Jimin rolled his eyes at him and Nari blushed.
"So! What do we do?" Repeated Soha.
"The only thing you guys can do is wait," said Taehyung before taking another sip at his wine.
"I guess so." Sighed Nari.
"Meanwhile, we can go through the whole case all over again. I'm sure there are clues we missed." Added Jimin.
"The thing is, we're still waiting for the case files from international police departments. Apparently, it's a long arse procedure." Soha explained.
"How long do you think it'll take?" Asked Jimin.
"No idea. Probably weeks." Soha answered.
"But," Taehyung started, while looking down at his wine glass he was stirring lightly.
Everyone focused their gazes on him.
"Tae?" Jimin called out.
"He might really be dormant, after all. It doesn't take a month for a human being to bleed to death. Unless... Is he may be waiting for all his victims to die before dropping all the bodies at once?"
"That doesn't fit the profile, though. From what I understood, the blood is his trophy, right? So what is he doing with the bodies?" Nari retorted.
"Let's just wait. I feel like he is going to make a move soon." Soha said.
"Yeah, I think so too." Jimin agreed.
Jin took another shot of alcohol and put his glass down.
"I have a bad feeling about this."
"Don't we all?"
"We really need to catch him soon."
Yoongi didn't answer this time. He watched the transparent liquid in his glass as if it was the most fascinating thing in the world.
He still didn't know why he accepted to come out and drink with his hyung, in the first place. He had too much to take care of to be doing this. And his hyung was busy as well, wasn't he? Surely, the vampire killer's case wasn't the only one he was working on. But it was the most gruesome one, so the most urgent.
The higher-ups were pressuring them all to find the killer as if it was an easy task. He'd like to see them try, those a-holes. Oh wait, he shouldn't insult them since his father was one of them.
A father he's been avoiding for days. He wouldn't be surprised if the old man paid him a surprised visit by the end of the week. The question was, would it be at home or at work?
"Hyung, how about we talk about something else?"
"Like what?" Asked Jin with a frown.
"I don't know, love?"
"Love?"
Jin laughed and sat up. He watched his younger friend take a small sip at his soju and sigh. Was he suffering from a heartbreak?
"Do you have something to tell me?"
"I'm just tired of this serial killer shit."
"Language."
"Sorry."
There was a short silence, then Yoongi finally looked up at his older friend. With a smirk, he asked, "so when will you confess your love to her?"
"I don't know what you're talking about, I don't have any love to confess to anyone."
"You know, denying it won't make it go away."
Jin didn't answer. He had nothing to say on the matter, anyway. He wasn't in love. He was just a bit troubled by her. She was beautiful and strong and smart, so of course, he liked talking to her. She was also so sweet, sometimes. So of course, he liked being around her. But that was it.
Why was everyone implying that he had feelings for her? It was ridiculous. They just had a big brother and little sister relationship. Nothing more.
"Maybe your feelings are just dormant, so you don't realize you have them," Yoongi said, then laughed.
"Are you drunk?"
"I only had two glasses, hyung."
"Right."
There was another silence as both of them got lost in thoughts. Jin was wondering why he wanted to talk to her all of a sudden. He was craving the sound of her voice and her smell. What the heck? Was the alcohol starting to kick in?
Yoongi was thinking of a certain short-haired petite woman with a short temper and feisty personality. She was so cute when she looked at him with those fierce dark eyes. He was still trying to figure out why she was always on the defensive when talking to him, though.
Did people at the precinct still think he would abuse his power? Even after all these months of working together? He loved his job and he worked hard to get there.
Well, he had a little push, but who didn't nowadays? It's not like he didn't deserve it after everything he went through during his earlier years of being a police officer...
Here we go again, thinking about the past. Why can't I just forget?
"How about you? Anyone you need to confess to?"
"I'm not sure. Maybe one day."
And that was it. They didn't talk about love anymore. They just drank one more bottle of soju and left. Since Jin was tipsier, Yoongi walked him home. They didn't live very far from each other, and he needed to think. So walking was good.
After he helped his hyung get to bed, he walked back home. He was deep in thoughts when he heard voices, then two women giggling. He looked up to see two familiar forms coming out of a convenience store, cans of beer in hand.
They were laughing really hard and talking at the same time. They looked like teenagers.
Cute.
They kept walking towards him, so Yoongi stopped and just watched them, waiting for one of them to recognize him. That's when the taller one looked his way and pointed at him.
"I think I'm drunk. I see things."
"What?"
"A vampire. It's a vampire. Awww he's a hot one. Are vampires really hot? Like in The Vampire's Diaries?"
The shorter one followed her partner's gaze and her eyes grew big in horror.
"Sir."
"Oh? You know the vampire?" Nari said with a laugh. She staggered towards him and she took his face in her hands.
"Why are you warm, vampire?" She asked with another giggle.
Soha pulled her friend away from Yongi and begged her to stop, but she kept laughing. Yoongi sighed as he knew his night was officially disrupted. First Jin hyung, now these two.
He knew he didn't have to get involved, but they were his juniors. He couldn't ignore his juniors. Of course, that was the only reason.
"Do you need help?" He asked Soha calmly.
She looked shocked at first, then nodded. Yoongi ended up giving Nari a piggyback until they arrived at her house. It was a small villa just like his. Well, his was bigger, but hers was way messier. Why was he not surprised?
He left the two women alone, so Soha could put her friend to bed, and he waited for her downstairs. When she finally came down half an hour later, she seemed surprised to see him.
"Why did you wait-"
"Do you live nearby?"He interrupted her.
"No, I'll just get a cab."
"I'll walk you to the cab, then."
As they were walking, none of them said a word for a whole minute. He didn't mind, but she seemed to be uncomfortable. Weird, seeing how she challenged him every day at work.
"I'm sorry about that, she gets really cute when she's drunk."
"It's nothing," Yoongi muttered without looking at her.
They walked a little more, then they were on the road. He signaled an approaching cab to stop and when it did, he opened the door for her. He then looked at her, finally.
When Yoongi's gaze met Soha's, he realized something important.
"Thank you, sir. Goodnight." She said with a smile before getting into the cab and it drove off.
Maybe the one with dormant feelings wasn't his hyung after all.
