《Electrosilver》Chapter 5

For the next few days, when dusk was not spending time cuddling his mom and having intellectual baby talk conversations with her, he was he was attuning himself to the E.M pulses outside his body.
He had already carried out tests on all his body parts and had discovered that while he could not see, all his other senses were in tip top condition. Apart from his eyesight which was nonexistent, all his other four senses were extremely sharp.
While he wanted to train his senses to see whether he could improve them, he doubted such a thing was possible. And if it was, he guessed that it would take years upon years. Think of it like this, ever since you were born, how many times has your hearing improved? Not even once, right? Exactly. Moreover, he already had it going pretty well for himself, he didn’t want to be too greedy.
One thing that he wanted to soon be able to do was to see whether he decipher the nature of inanimate waves so that he could be able to differentiate between different types of objects by not only using their shapes but also their natures.
The reason why he decided to start his journey of wave discovery with inanimate waves was that, of all the waves he could not yet decipher, they were the easiest. After all, they stayed either within or on the surface of the object that produced them, thus they were rather easy to study.
And so, for the past ten days, he had been training.
Due to his active training in E.M waves outside the body, his range of impact had increased to a little under 2.5 kilometers.
Within this range, he could sense that he was inside some form of palace, only that this palace was huge! Within this palace, there were surprisingly few people. While one would have expected such a huge castle to contain hundreds, if not thousands of people, it only contained thirty of them.
Outside of this palace were many residences with humans inside. These residences were all around the palace in a circular manner, it was as though the palace was the seismic point and the houses were the waves.
One thing that astonished Dusk, however, was that while he would have excpected there to be an extremely strict wealth divide in such a society, the only houses that seemed more pompous than the rest were those within a radius of one kilometer around the palace. Futher than that, for as far as Dusk could sense, all the houses seemed to be of the same stature. While they were not as good as those within the one kilometer radius, they were pretty awesome themselves.
It seemed as though in this city, the Empiria capital city, everyone lived lavishly.
However, the more you thought about it, the more sense it made, unlike in regular human societies where you had to work for you to get food to eat, in the high human society where eating was unnecessary, you could even choose not to work and you would still live comfortably. Provided you have a means to acquire clothes and a safe place to live.

One building in his radar that still baffled him no matter how many times he saw it was a building right outside the one kilometer radius that was almost as big as the palace.
This building, he clearly remembered from his mother’s memories, was called The Doorfables association building, and to his knowledge, every kingdom contained more than one. The purpose of its existence was to provide a platform by which people could go explore the forest in exchange for fable points and money.
The Doorfables association was formed for two main reasons. The first one was that while most of the high humans were comfortable living in the Alatza continent with no regard for what was going on outside, others felt that they were bound for greater things and so they felt uncomfortable having been confined into the Alatza continent by the forest around them.
It is for that reason that the Doorfables association was formed to issue out missions for exploration and mapping of the forest and for the identification of different species of beasts present in the forest. The missions were usually issued out to people at different levels of difficulty based on one’s level of strength.
The second reason why the Doorfables association was formed is that in the past, after going to the forest and obtaining various beast cores from the monsters they killed, people would often be at a loss on where to sell these beast cores. And while these beast cores were useful in the manufacture of different products, without a specified market, things were really hectic.
And so, the Doorfables association took it upon themselves to come up with a list of cores and their relative prices. They even developed missions where they would award people different prices for going to the forest to obtain beast cores from different types of beasts.
While this explanation may have made it sound like all kinds of beasts were violent and brutal, that is not precisely the case, there are quite a number of them that are rather peaceful. Some even left the forest to live among the humans. Some as pets, others as free individuals.
Just as Dusk stopped focusing on the inanimate waves, he felt his mother’s chest right in front of him. These days he spent a lot of his time seated on his mother’s lap as he wanted to get even closer to her. One only has one mother after all. …..Okay, maybe two every now and then but that’s not the point here. The point was that Dusk really loved his mum and wanted to make himself closer to her.
Feeling his mother in front of him, Dusk immediately hugged her stomach tightly. Tightly for a baby that is. As he felt her warmth seep into him, he could hear a soft chuckle before his mother began to pat him lovingly on the head.
Feeling his mother’s loving pat, Dusk could not help but purr out unconsciously, making his mother shriek excitedly before she dropped all the work that she was doing and held him up with her two hands.

Feeling quite comfortable in his mothers arms, Dusk could not help but let out a loving “mama.”
The moment he said that word, he was pretty sure that he felt his mother’s temperature rise for a bit before she started speaking
“Dusk, my baby you’re just so cute. You’re making mama want to gobble you up. If you keep calling me in such a cute manner, you’re going to make mama want to keep you with her for the rest of her life.”
When his mother was saying some quite disturbing things, you could tell that she was extremely happy. Her gloomy temperament from a few days ago had disappeared so completely that were you to compare the two people’s temperament, you would not believe that they are the same person.
The current her was more of a well of smiles as opposed to a pond of tears that she was a few days ago. And for that, Dusk felt extremely happy. His mom’s happiness was his happiness.
Just as Dusk was still feeling bliss over his mother’s change in demeanor, the door burst open and two individuals walked in. One with the body of a fifteen-sixteen year old, and the other with a body of a nineteen-twenty year old lady.
While the taller one was quiet, the shorter one sure liked to talk. From the moment she burst into the door, no, from the moment she entered the palace, she had been talking endlessly. Even though Dusk was already aware of their presence from the moment they entered his range, he just chose to ignore them until they arrived.
Dusk was sure that his mother had also noticed their presence, after all, she was a damn S rank, how could she not know when her two daughters arrived home.
That’s right, these two were Dusk’s elder sisters, Sunny and Seria. As Dusk had been informed of their anticipated arrival by his mother, he was not really surprised by their presence. What he was instead surprised about was how much Sunny could talk.
“Damn, I knew I should have expected this but these are just not things that you are taught how to react to.” He thought to himself.
“Aaaw, how cute, is this our baby bro? Is this him? He’s so cute. I’ve always wanted a baby brother, can I keep him? Can I keep him? Pleeeease?”
Before he could even conclude his musings, Dusk heard Sunny’s excited voice before a pair of hands that were not his mother’s (most probably Sunny’s) pulled him to herself and started hugging him furiously. It was as though he was about to be stolen from her.
Just before he almost ran out of breath, a different pair of hands, Seria’s, picked him from sunny and held him gently towards her ample bossom.
“Sunny, I know that baby bro is really cute, but what would you have done had you broken him?” Seria’s voice sounded out before she began to jokingly throw him up and down.
“Sorry big sis, but it’s not fair, you’re doing it too. Give cute baby bro to me, I want to hug him too.” Sunny retorted.
“Damn, what is this feeling of helplessness, I feel like I’m being handled like a toy. Damn you, you helpless baby body.” Dusk thought to himself as he was still being thrown around by Seria who was muttering weird things like “Hoho, what a cute toy, I’ll enjoy myself with you baby bro.”
“Take me back to mommy, mommy is the only one that treats me gently. Mommy come save me” was all that Dusk could think about while he was still in Seria’s care. While he was really happy that his sisters loved him, he was not sure whether his frail body could hold on much longer.
“Seria, give me the baby, you’re going to hurt him yourself.” His mother proclaimed.
“Thank you mommy, you’re the best.” Dusk could only say internally with tears of appreciation in his eyes.
“But honestly though, mum, why does he look so different from all the other high humans I have ever met. Your letter had informed us that he is a bit different, but this, this is not something you see every day, or, ever!”
“I also don’t know Seria, maybe it’s a blessing or something? I just don’t know. This is new for me too. It’s really painful for me as a mother to not be able to understand my baby’s condition.” His mother said almost at the brink of tears.
“It’s okay mom, it’s not your fault, at least you still take good care of him, right? So how else is he different? I can’t imagine there being anything else but since you had sent us a letter only telling us that we have a baby brother and that he’s a little different, it’s best to get this over with now.” Seria stated
“Okay, he’s ….erm, blind.” His mom responded in a dejected tone.
“Well that explains why he never opens his eyes. Mmh, but on a serious note though, it’s gonna make his life a little bit difficult, that one. Well it’s no worries though, since we can’t solve that problem, all that we three can do for him as a family is to love and support him. Okay sunny?”
“Okay big sis, just leave small brother to me.” During this whole mother-daughter conversation, Sunny had surprisingly been extremely silent. It was only at the end when she was called for that she replied. It was as though this mother daughter confrontation often happened and she knew best to stay out of it.
While they were still talking, Dusk had become engulfed in emotion because of something they had said. For these two people who he had only met for the first time today to vow to protect and take care of him, he could not help but thank the universe for giving him such a loving family.

Delicate as Glass
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Nuri, an [Assistant Glassworker], only has a single Skill. It’s really not fair. He’s worked in the hot shop his entire life, following in his father’s footsteps after his parents passed away, but he’s stuck. Despite possessing above-average talent as an artisan, he still hasn’t shed his [Assistant] status, gained a second Skill, or even leveled enough to reach the first Threshold. Besides, he’s bored; most days he daydreams of adventure and becoming a hero, or pines for the renown that’s sure to be his if he evolves his Class into a [Master Glass Smith], but nothing ever changes—until suddenly, fate strikes, and nothing is ever the same again. These days, Nuri sees more magic, prestige, and adventure than he can handle as he gets swept up in realm-shaking conspiracies and desperate fights for his life. Maybe a boring life wasn’t so bad after all. Disclaimers: 1) Names were mostly chosen through random generators and aren’t necessarily final. If they seem derivative or boring, blame RNG. 2) Skills, Classes, levels, and the entire system is currently a work in progress; please be kind if it’s not very well fleshed out yet. 3) This is the first full-length novel I've set out to write without a single plot point ready. I had nothing in mind other than a recent visit to a hot shop. Molten glass is pretty awesome. 4) Related, I know much less about glass than I’d like. I did some research, but mistakes are bound to happen. If you have a correction, thanks! Please be polite about it. 5) The prose is my experimental attempt at first-person, present tense. I realize it may not be everyone’s preference, but I hope you’ll give it a try anyway!
