《The Once Simple Life of a Dungeon Skeleton》Chapter 22 - Heroic Slaves

The day started just like any other, I woke up, dragged myself of to my computer, sat down, and began my work day. My job allowed me to work from home so I never had to leave my room. What was my job? Well, to put it simply I level characters in MMOs, and farm gold or whatever currency the MMO is using at the time. I max out characters levels and then sell them along with the currency I've gathered while leveling. The money I make isn't much but it's enough to pay the rent for the apartment I live in and it means that I don't have to go outside either. It's not that I hate going outside, it's just that I hate the people that are out there. Certain things happened to me earlier in my life that I'd rather never remember, and because of that I hate being around other people.
Now with that out of the way, I was simply sitting at my desk when a bight light appeared below me and blinded me for a few seconds. By the time I opened my eyes I was sitting on a floor that looked to made of marble and I was surrounded by a crowd of people. I started to break out in a cold sweat but then I realized the people around me were just as confused as I was. They were looking around, so I did the same and what I saw was amazing. We were all in what looked like a very large throne room, there were even seven thrones at the front of the room and large statues of angels everywhere. Then I noticed the other people, the ones that didn't look right. While the people around me in the center of the room had on modern clothes and were just as confused as I was, there were other people surrounding us that wore a very different type of clothing. It looked at handmade and from a much earlier time. There were even people who wore suits of armor and others that carried staves and wore really long robes. And it was about here that I realized what was happening.
"Ah... so that's it..."
My sweating stopped just as fast as it started and I almost couldn't stop myself from jumping up and down and shouting at the top of my lungs.
'It actually fucking happened! I can't believe it! This is the best thing ever!'
At this point I heard a woman yell.
"Welcome Heroes!"
The woman who yelled was wearing what looked like priest robes and she was holding a staff. I didn't really bother listening to what she had to say because it probably involved something like the fate of Humanity and killing some Demon Lord, both of which I didn't care for.
'So, if it's like this then I should have that right? Right? Let's see... Status!'
I tried saying it in my head first because interrupting someone who was probably a Queen wasn't a very good idea.

'Oh, so my "cheat" is that I have a lot of MP? Am I supposed to be some sort of glass cannon? It's useful but I need to think of a way I can get out of all this "Hero" business. I don't feel like dying for anyone, let alone people I don't know.'
I started thinking of a plan when I heard the woman's speech come to an end.
"Now my guards will guide you all to a room where you can rest for today. I understand you all must be very tired with all of this happening so suddenly. I know you all must have questions, they will be answered tomorrow, I promise."
With her speech finished we were all led off like a herd of cattle and taken to our rooms.
If I'm being honest, my room was quite nice, and I wouldn't actually mind staying here if it didn't mean I had to die for it. I looked around the room for a bit then tried to open the door only to find that it was locked. Next I tried climbing out of the window only to find there was some sort of invisible barrier preventing me from leaving.
"I see..."
'So they really do intend to treat us like cattle huh? We'll see about that.'
I aimed my hand at the window and shouted out one of the spells I had in my mind.
'Dark Ice Bolt!'
I didn't feel like setting the whole room on fire and then burning to death of I couldn't get out.
A large black icicle formed in front of my hand and then flew toward the window. When it hit the invisible barrier on the window it exploded and covered the entire room in black frost. In response to the loud explosion a group of guards rushed inside and before I could do anything I was tied up and thrown on the bed with a bag over my head. Thinking back on it now, it probably would've been better to cast a spell at the damn wooden door instead of some magical invisible barrier.
"Ugh..."
'I'm such an idiot, I should really think things through a little more.'
So, there I was, tied up and laying on a nice bed that was currently covered in black frost. For some reason I didn't feel cold even though the entire room was frozen. Perhaps I was immune to the cold, but I had a fire spell too so maybe I was also immune to fire? I tried casting a spell again but nothing happened. Maybe I could only cast a spell when I knew where I wanted it to go? I would have to test it out more if I ever got the chance.

I was sitting there for a while and I heard noises coming from around me, most of them were people yelling, a few sounded like explosions. Once that quieted down my door opened again and I was thrown to the ground on my stomach and had my shirt ripped off. At this point I didn't know what was going to happen but I feared the worst.
"Good, this one isn't resisting like the others."
"Maybe there's something wrong with him Master?"
"That's none of our concern just prepare the spell."
"Yes."
I heard two voices, the one being called Master sounded female while the other sounded male. I was a bit relieved when they mentioned a spell since my mind had imagined much darker things happening to a man that was face down on a floor with his clothes ripped off, though I still had my pants on. I heard them chant something in a language I didn't understand and then my back felt like it was fire. The pain was so intense I couldn't hold back my screams as I felt something carve its way into my skin.
"Done, let's go, we have much more work to do tonight."
"Yes Master."
When they left I got up and took the bag off my head. Apparently whatever they just did to me means that they don't have to worry about me trying to escape anymore. I tried casting a spell again and only felt pain from my back that paralyzed me for a few seconds.
"Great..."
'Not even a full day after being summoned to another world and I'm already a slave. Great job Adrian, and here you're supposed to have 100 Intelligence and 1000 Wisdom. I guess those stats don't accurately reflect how smart I really am.'
With nothing else to do I decided I might as well get some sleep.
---------------
"So it's done then?"
"Yes, my Queen."
"Well done, you're dismissed."
A woman who was dressed like a witch and had a small boy following her left the throne room. Once they were gone the Queen formed a very disturbing smile on her face.
"Oooooohh ho ho ho ho! My plan is finally coming together!"
"Elisabeth, could you please not laugh like that. It's creepy and it makes you look like some cliche anime villain. Especially the way you put your hand in front of your face like that."
"Oh come on Brenda, don't ruin my fun. All we have to do now is train our cannon fod- I mean Heroes, and then send them off to fight that annoying Slime Queen while we kill the Death General. Easy right?"
"Umm, sorry Elisabeth, but do you think you could explain to me again what exactly this plan of yours is? I know we summoned the Heroes to help us fight the Slime Queen and Death General, but why are we trying to fight them? Aren't we supposed to be trying to find a way to get back home?"
"Ugh, look Black, I know it might be hard to understand due to how utterly stupid you are. So sit down, listen, and try not to fall asleep this time okay?"
"..... Fine."
"Good. Now starting with the main reason, finding a way back home. If there even is a way back, we have no idea where to look and so we've been wondering around this world looking for something we're not even sure exists. So, on the very likely chance that there isn't a way home, we need to find a way to live in this world permanently."
"And to do that we took over a country?"
"Look Black! Given the choice, would you rather live like a middle class person or live like a king?"
"Well I'd-"
"A king! Exactly! And a king needs subjects to rule over does he not?"
"Well that depends on-"
"Yes he does! And so I came up with the plan to win over the NPCs and take over this country. The way I did that was by overthrowing the country's current king by making it seem like he was guilty of something no one knew about. Since he couldn't face judgment due to no one knowing about it, one of the gods sent some divine judgment in the form of the undead. Was the king truly guilty of something no one knew about? What exactly was the king guilty of? Who fucking cares. The NPCs ate it up and now we rule the country, so you understand it so far Black?
"Uhhhh-"
"Perfect! Moving on. Since we took control of the country, it is now our job to get rid of those undead and that Slime Queen. We could handle them one on one but we can't beat them while they're together, so we summoned Heroes. Now the last thing we need is them refusing to help us, so we enslave them. Simple right?"
"Wait, I still don't-"
"Great! All this explaining has made me tired, I'm going to sleep."
"Elisabeth, I understand your plan and all, but I still don't like enslaving those people, some of which were even children. Also couldn't we just go back home with them once they've finished their job?"
"Oh come on Grey, you don't believe they're actual people do you? Look, the spell to summon them was already in the game before we were trapped here. So the summoned "Heroes" are obviously just NPCs. Don't become one of those people that can't tell the difference between a game and reality. Besides, there's no way to send them back. They'll just fight and die in order to make sure that we come back alive, like true Heroes. Now, we have a lot of work tomorrow so I need some rest, good night."

Thief of Time
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Book 1: The Legend of Tot Synopsis: Claud Primus, a self-declared master thief, has a simple goal. To live forever. It's a rather easy task, for miraculous objects called lifestones are able to extend one's lifespan. These lifestones are best found in the treasuries of nobles, lovely resorts that Claud pays a visit to every so often. Unfortunately, one of those nightly visits go awry, and Claud is forced to escape with just a single lifestone and a box in hand. Normally, that's when things die down. The guards yawn, the gates close, and the night continues. But this time, the night isn't that forgiving. A dozen schemes result in the murder of someone important, and with a convenient scapegoat — Claud — at hand, it doesn't take long for him to be framed as a heinous criminal, wanted for the indirect murder of someone high up...and it just gets worse from there. Book 2: The Moon Lords' Rise Synopsis: As ordered chaos sweeps across Licencia, Claud leaves for Julan Barony, intent on making some profits there. Accompanied by the erstwhile heiress of Julan, a fellow member of the Moon Lords, the two plot against the barony's wealth...as well as a promise to bring about its downfall. Meanwhile, back home, the Moon Lords have busied themselves with digesting their gains. Eyes, however, are beginning to turn to this proverbial fish in a small pond. The fishermen are coming. When they cast their hook, what will Dia and the others do? Book 3: Murders under the Moons Synopsis: In the sleepy town of Nachtville, where Claud and Lily are forced to stop at, a set of nasty murders occurs. Victims scream out in fright, before a spear falls from the sky to end their suffering. Cowed and cautious, the master thief and his partner slink in the shadows, their objective that of home... A new task, however, has fallen on Dia. With a trusty helper at her side, she has to set off towards Nachtville itself, to solve the mystery Claud had abandoned. Faced with an enemy whose sole skillset is geared towards killing, how will they succeed? And what dark secrets will they find? Book 4: In the Dark of the Moons Synopsis: The year has ended. The four months of the full moons will soon be followed by two months of the new moons. Duke Istrel's ascension is around the corner. Amidst this political upheaval, Count Nightfall, Licencia's strongest defender, has been called away. The Moon Lords' largest task yet — to protect Licencia in the absence of its ruler — has begun. And yet, trouble is unrelenting. A distinguished personage, one that Claud fears, has been found dead in the county, his brains dug out and his body disemboweled. The inquisitors of the White Church have been dispatched to investigate and apprehend the murderer...as well as the person behind this puppet. Tormented by a call to fight, Claud directs his eyes out of the city, looking for the puppetmaster. Skulking in the shadows, the master thief will soon confront his greatest foe yet. A foe just like him. Book 5: Moonlit Tides and Darkened Seas Synopsis: A new era has begun. For the privileged, the sands of time dribble away for every passing moment, counting down to the arrival of a entity of mythical proportions. The night now harbours shadows and fog, and operatives of the Moons and the Dark clash in shadow. Claud, as usual, is investigating a spate of nasty disappearances in the city, but little does he know what these disappearances truly mean. And yet, a tide is coming. When it finally breaks, what will he do? Book 6: Secrets in Shadow Synopsis: The person behind a strike that would enter the annals of history flees his home, bringing with him the person closest to his heart into a new land and into a new world. Having left Istrel for the first time in his life, the two of them attempt to settle down in foreign lands, only to be caught in the middle of hostilities between two mighty powers grappling for dominion. Yet, none of that has anything to do with him. Following his desires, Claud eventually makes his way to the fabled Celestia Ruins, a fragment of another world. Bearing witness to truths he cannot yet comprehend, he returns from his exploration, a small break away from the machinations of destiny. One thing, however, is for certain. Destiny will not wait for him. Book 7: Reddest Rage Synopsis: Destiny churns on, heedless of mortal machinations, and Claud watches as the battlegrounds between the Moons and the Dark are drawn up. With the forces of the great Dark occupying Lostfon, Claud comes to a startling realisation — that he may have very well be a murderer of heinous proportions. Grappling with that realisation, he struggles to prepare for his Second Tutorial... Back in Istrel, Dia finds herself confronted with a perennial truth. Even in a time of writhing destiny, the machinations between nobles never cease to end — and unfortunately for her, the group once known as the Moon Lords are forced into dealing with a petty squabble between two counts. What they didn't account for, however, was the startling discovery they would soon make... And the shadow of the Red God's Holy Son behind it all. Book 8: Darkness Descends Synopsis: Nightmares haunt the horizon as Claud sinks and awakens from a seeming dream. What was once illusory begins to play out before him, in a way he cannot imagine. Dia, forced to wield arms, begins and ends a battle that opens her eyes to the vast dangers that lurk in this sundered world. Under the banner of humanity and divinity, she beholds the silent, forgotten protectors of Orb...but there is no forgetting the battle between the divinities. The Dark descends, the Moons writhe, and the horns of war blow once more. But this is not their battle. Not yet. Book 9: Moons Muster Synopsis: As more and more events fall into place, Claud finds himself desperate. Not for himself, but for the person who has turned into his world. Armed with the knowledge of a certain future, he approaches the only person that could possibly help him in his time of need, trading information for a promise of help. With that as solace, he returns to the grim task of understanding and seeking, revisiting an ancient, shattered fragment of another world...unleashing changes that he never knew was possible. Back in Istrel, Dia and the others must now navigate around a familiar spirit, who seeks to investigate the death of his master's Bearer. With them as prime suspects, the Seekers of Life must move carefully...but the Coloured Gods are not the only divinities eyeing them closely. The Moons, bristling from repeated defeats, are looking for new recruits, and the Seekers of Life are prime cannon fodder. Above all, destiny marches on, the unfeeling clock a warning to all. The Trial of Aeons will soon arrive. Book 10: Destiny Divine Synopsis: ??? Release frequency: one every few days or something, I guess. To Blunt The Sharpest Claw
The Velvet Paw of Asquith Novels are a series of New Fable genre novels that involve cats and dogs and high adventure and romance and espionage and food-fights and hotels and explosions and car chases. With large casts, exotic locations and an absurdity only possible in the absence of human characters, the Velvet Paw of Asquith Novels blend Wind in the Willows with James Bond, though with more cafes and fewer badgers. This submission is the third title in its Morigan Trilogy, beginning two-thirds of the way through the series' longest adventure yet. Here's a quick recount of what's happened so far: When Oscar Teabag-Dooven, a Velvet Paw of Asquith, is ordered to investigate how a mysterious poet, the Ar'dath-Irr, is able to travel instantaneously around the world, two very bad things happen. Firstly, he meets Lydia, an insane librarian who punches everyone in the face, and secondly, the Ar'dath-Irr reveals he is intent on taking over the world. Although this second thing might be considered worse than the first, Oscar feels differently following Lydia’s destruction of a cafe, a library and his face in one afternoon. In comparison, thwarting world domination just seems easier. Along with Binklemitre, a fellow Velvet Paw of Asquith, and Lydia, Oscar infiltrates the Ar’dath-Irr’s realm of dark poetry to discover the dog not only intends wrenching the world apart but has no intention of cleaning up afterwards. As a result, Oscar decides it’s all too hard and goes home to have a bath. After lots of arguing and the sort of food fight that posh restaurants were invented for, Lydia and Binklemitre convince him that they must stop the Ar’dath-Irr for several reasons, one of them quite serious. A vibrant cast of characters collide as Oscar, Lydia and Binklemitre battle the Ar’dath-Irr and his disciples in an adventure involving exploding cafés and appalling hotels, car chases and inadvertent surgery, dreadful poetry, lots of arguments and at least one temper-tantrum, all of which draw the three into dark and convoluted corners of a world they weren’t aware existed. Moreover, any chance of sitting down and discussing things over some buns disappears when Lydia punches the Ar’dath-Irr in the face. This results in her having a psychotic episode and Oscar getting run over by an ambulance. Although Binklemitre suffers neither, he witnesses both, which is almost as dreadful, though not nearly so messy. An enormous battle ensues, followed by a dinner party and then everything explodes.
