《Gamer》Chapter 2 - Experimentation

I spent the afternoon training in various ways. I would have liked to level up cooking some more, see if I can unlock anything besides better food.
But I didn't think it would be a great idea to make a bunch of food I'm not going to eat..
The first thing on my agenda was to see about casting spells. Its only logical.
The obvious spell that everyone immediately thinks of is fireball. But I didn't have anything I could test it out on and use as a target.
We lived near a forest, but I didn't plan to start a forest fire either.
So standing in my backyard, I tried to sense my power, have it welling from the ground, gathering it through the air.
Imagining a core of power inside my chest, drawing it out through my hands.
Anything.
I tried imagining power welling in my hands, overlapping, swelling. With my eyes closed I imagined the feeling for a few minutes.
Then to my excitement, I felt a tickling on my hand.
When I opened my eyes however, a mosquito was sucking my blood.
I quickly squashed it in disgust. To my disappointment however, I wasn't given a notification of exp.
I gave up in disgust on the magic aspect and went inside.
The next thing on my agenda was jogging. I could train my physical stats with this, and perhaps learn a related skill.
Changing into loose clothing, I went outside and started jogging down the pavement. It was a hot day and a few cars passed me.
At first I felt fine and full of energy, however ten minutes later I was getting tired.
I've seen no stats or skill related gains during this time.
This wasn't going to be harder than I thought was it?
I kept going, my breathing was getting shallow and my legs were aching. Finally when I was about to stop, a window popped up.
END +1
With a groan, I collapsed on a nearby bench. The minute I did so, two more windows appeared.
You have learned the skill Jogging
By depleting it, you have learned of your stamina
Freaking finally. I thought it was strange not to have a stamina bar.
Opening my stats, my stamina now appears.
StatsLevel1Health87/87Stamina2/94VIT8STR7END9AGI7DEX12INT13WIS12LUK11
As I watched, my stamina rose by 1.

Timing it against my watch, I came to the conclusion that my stamina recovered by 5 every 10 seconds.
Judging by my new skill Jogging, it seemed that I would be able to unlock movement related skills.
SkillJoggingLevel1Jogging at a steady pace has gotten easier.
You can keep jogging for slightly longer!
Why couldn't it give me figures? Numbers? Some facts I can work with instead of this vague textual description of less stamina consumed..
After resting for a few minutes, my stamina was fully recovered and I stood up and started jogging again.
I headed back home, I wanted to see about trying to level up some other skill.
During that, I kept jogging to increase my proficiency in the skill.
Sure enough, when I was almost home I hit another level.
The skill Jogging has reached level 2You can keep jogging for slightly longer!
Jogging speed has also slightly increased!
Nice! I had been hoping for speed gains. Later, I thought I should try learn the skills for jumping and sprinting.
Walking would be a skill too if this was a indicator, but I should learn it just fine without the need to train for it.
For now however, I wanted to train a combat related skill.
I finished jogging home, and instead of being completely tired, my stamina still had a few points left in it.
Heading down the stairs into the basement, I turned the light on and started hunting around through the junk.
Pushing piles of books aside and a broken TV. I found my baseball bat. Heading back upstairs I exited the back door and went out to the backyard.
We had a thick wooden log set in the ground there. Relic of the previous tenants. I don't know what it's for honestly, but it would make a great target to whack with the bat.
Yep. I planned to gain some combat ability with my bat.
Increase my strength as well.
Taking a stance, I started slamming the bat into the side of the pillar. A minute passed and my arms were growing tired.
My stamina also rapidly depleted as I swung the bat around.
My hands grew numb from the jolt and pain of the bat thudding against a hard object. You should try it out sometime. Its great..

Taking a rest, I regained my stamina and repeated the process. After the second repetition, I gained a stat, and after the third repetition of this I gained two skills.

You have learned the skill Blunt Weapons
You have learned the subskill Blunt Weapons: Clubs
Taking a break, I looked at the newly acquired skills
SkillBlunt WeaponsLevel1Blunt weapons deal more damage
SkillBlunt Weapons: ClubsLevel1You deal more damage when using a club or related weapon
Stamina replenished again, I got back up and continued smashing my bat into the wooden log.
My hands grew numb and fingers stiff, rivulets of sweat ran down my body. The sun was hot and beat down on my back as I punished the log for existing.
Finally with a swing at the log, the bat slipped out of my unfeeling fingers.
I'd pushed my body further than I had ever tried in the past.
And the fun thing was, everytime my stamina replenished. I could keep going again. I didn't get tired, and my stamina regeneration speed didn't decrease.
During this time, I gained a few stats, levelled up my blunt weapon skills and gained two new skills.

SkillBlunt Weapons: ClubsLevel4You deal more damage when using a club or related weapon.
You have learned the skill Shock Resistance
SkillShock ResistanceLevel2You take less damage from shock related damage
You have less chance of being stunned
You have learned the skill Physical Exercise
SkillPhysical ExerciseLevel2When training, experience gains increases and stamina depletion decreases
The skills were useful, though during this the shock of the bat hitting the thick log had dealt damage. My health regenerated however, so instead of some super low amount, my health was 80/87.
Timing it, I regenerated my health by 3 every 10 seconds. My VIT increased my health by 10 points, and I had a inkling it was increased by exercising the body.
Healthy body = More health points.
I had also gained a level from this.
A window popped up, allowing me to distribute 5 stat points.
I choose to place them all in wisdom.
If my theory was right, I would gain experience faster.
The sky was getting dark as I went inside, sweat covered my body and though it slightly ached. I felt fine. My hands were a little numb as I recovered my health. But this time I wanted to see about increasing my other two stats I had been neglecting.
After taking a shower and changing, I went inside my room.
Heading to my computer, I halted in dismay when I saw the wrecked remains.
I had completely forgotten about yesterday.
...
My good mood was killed.
I needed to get rid of the computer as the smell of burnt plastic was getting to me.
Nothing inside the casing was salvageable. The cords themselves were blackened and had bits of melted plastic exposing the wires inside, though the power socket in my room looked to be fine.
Packing it up, I took the remains outside to the dumpster and threw them in.
The desk had scorch marks on the side, and I thought about chucking it. But eventually decided to keep it.
Heading downstairs, I hunted around for books I could look at.
My mother was home and she was surprised that I cooked something earlier. She made white rice to eat alongside the curry.
When my father came home, we ate dinner at the table after which I took my collection of books upstairs to read.
I started with the encyclopaedia. The contents in it was interesting enough to keep me engrossed.
After finishing it (It wasn't very thick), I moved onto a book describing the life of a chinese general, then a fantasy novel.
Occasionally I was rewarded with a notification.
In the end, the fantasy novel didn't give me any stats, through I had gained 2 INT and 1 WIS along with two new skills.
You have learned the skill Reading
SkillReadingLevel2Time seems to slow slightly as you read.
You have a better understanding on the things you read.
You have learned the skill Memorization
SkillMemorizationLevel1Your memory slightly improves
My eyes tired and a yawn stretching my mouth, I changed for bed. As a afterthought, I checked my stats.

I seem to be gaining stats abnormally fast. Is this the power of the Gamer skill?
Giving it no further thought, I then fell asleep.

Witchbone: The Goblins Winter
Themes found in these stories include friendship, found family, defying negative expectations, trying to figure out how to be a force for good in your corner of the world, doing heroic things even if you don't look or feel like a hero, and that being different isn't necessarily fatal. Summary: A spell of arctic weather. A mysterious death. The reading of a will. Strange tracks in the snow. Eleven-year-old Danny Hallow accepts his life, such as it is. His father is dead, his mother left years ago. His three Keepers are the only people aware of Danny's erratic and not-very-impressive psychic abilities. He has no friends, he's been suspended from school, and he's responsible for the life of a small brown bat that's ended up in his care. When Danny's estranged Uncle Enoch dies under mysterious circumstances, he and his Keepers are called to the town of Eddystone, New Hampshire for the reading of the man's will. Traveling four hundred miles from his dreaded hometown to attend, Danny is happy to get away, possibly inherit something interesting- and maybe find out more about his family while he's there. Arriving at the crumbling family estate of Gnomewood Home, he finds it to be hauntingly familiar, a bit creepy, oddly comforting, and possibly alive. When his uncle's will reveals that he's inherited Gnomewood and everything in it, he's determined to stay and make a happier life for himself in Eddystone, somehow. But at Gnomewood, he finds more questions than answers to his family's secrets. Disturbing old memories come to him in dreams. His psychic abilities begin to grow stronger, and as a result he becomes aware that a horde of cryptic creatures are plaguing the town of Eddystone, seemingly drawn out by the spell of an unusually frigid February. Toothy little goblins that are sneaky, vicious, and hungry. Goblins that take a particular interest in Danny. Will the emergence of the alien, and potentially dangerous, power he's inherited from his peculiar family tree help Danny survive the goblin infested winter, inadvisable attempts to befriend a terrifying boy with silver eyes, and a new school? Only if he learns to control them before they put him and everyone around him in danger. Before they convince some people that he should never have been allowed to exist at all. Before he becomes just another twisted tale in his family's bizarre history, kept hidden for centuries within the ivy-covered walls of Gnomewood Home.
