《The undead who yearned for life》56-Angels in Hell

Lol, everyone pressed me for a spoiler, then when I made one, no one comment it. From now on I'll not write them anymore.
On a more serious note, I wanted to write 3 chapters today but royal road wasn't ok with it and the first chapter went lost somewhere, so I had to rewrite it. Hopefully I'll release at least two of them today.
Ah, because of all this chaos in the website 3-4 new reviews appeared in the page of my fiction (don't know why they didn't appear before, so I'm thanking you now).
And last of all, somehow the number of readers rose to over 11000? I hope it's a real number, if not I might go and cry in a corner later...
This is important: in many stories and legends, nephilim are looked down upon as useless as their only ability is being able to understand, talk and write in every known language, even with animals; from there the title that Jack acquired.
Enjoy the chapter
----------------------------------------------------------------Jack POV-------------------------------------------------------------------
By relying on the map I memorized from the ancestor's notes, I used only three hours to reach the city my target lives in; the city in structured in a circular way with layers and high walls, like more or less everything in Hell, sometimes it gets boring.
The road to reach the city varied greatly, but can be resumed as a forest with multiple swamps, sometime an anidead can be seen, but they're rare, and some of them are continuously dying in the swamps; on my way here I saw one of them come back to life only to die moments later by drowning... or something like that, I don't exactly know if undeads can die by drowning, and I'm never going to try it out.
In the ancestor's notes, there was nothing about how the cities work, probably because he could always do what he wanted, so he never stopped to take a look at anything other than what caught his attention; because of that what I'm going to do now is to gather information about the inner workings of the city.
From the distance, I could see that no guards are present at the gates of the city, but no one is coming out... this is strange, if there is no one guarding the gate, shouldn't people be able to get out?
The terrain near a city is a plain surrounded by hills, and the forest ends at the peak of those hills, so I hid myself for a while behind the last tree and waited for something to happen at the gates.
I didn't have to wait too much as someone revived outside of the gates and entered, but as he approached the gate, nothing happened ad he was able to simply enter in the city, once he passed the gates I could no longer see what happened to him... I feel as if I wasted half an hour of my life in this moment.
Because I plan to find my prey in this city, I'm not bothering to change my armor, hopefully this will prevent unnecessary troubles in this place... though I don't think it will be a problem even if troubles do come my way, from what I know only in the next circle things will get serious.
While thinking about the second circle, I proceeded to slowly walk toward the gates with my senses are fully alert, many heroes died while lowering their guard; I'm not going to be one of them.
After entering in the city, traces of blood are everywhere and I could feel different people approaching my place... I could escape, but then I'd need to find someone to ask question to, it's better if they come on their own without me searching for them.

-You, stop where you are and tell me where you found that weapon and your armor- (Guard A)
-We know you are a evil person, we just need to find out how much with this orb, then you'll be sent in a different circle of the city after you explain yourself- (Guard B)
Before I could say anything, the put his hand on my shoulder and held me while the other guard took out an orb from somewhere: How much strength must he have to not let me move even with all my stats that high?
-Oh? We have quite the strong one here, if I wasn't here no one else in this city would be able to restrain you, now let me check your sins- (guard A).
The orb he pressed in my forehead dimly lighted up and the guard keeping me in place had his jaw fall: -is there a problem?- I said without thinking.
The guard had just closed his mouth that his jaw dropped again: -how... how are you able to talk in enochian? Only us angels should know it, and why you don't possess the slightest sin? Also, the orb is saying that you have a bit of karmic merit, we are in Hell, this shouldn't be possible -.
Angels? In this world angels exist? Why do I feel things just got more and more complicated? -Well, if you could free me from your grip that is getting tighter by the second, I'll answer to your question-.
The guard looked at me for a second, then he retracted his hand and scrutinized me again: -I'm called Azrael, I'm an angel general, I don't really understand what sort of existence are you, but the orb says that you shouldn't even be here, so I'll give you some trust, how about you come with me at the garrison?-.
Well, I see no problems with it, may as well take my chances and ask to this angel informations, but there is something I don't understand: -I have no problems in following you to the garrison, but could you tell me something? You said you are an angel, but don't angels usually have wings? How come you don't have them? Isn't that strange?-.
Azrael looked amused at me, then he laughed: -You possess unique weapon and armor before even entering in a city, then you can talk the angel's language and I can't see your face no matter what, as if that wasn't already enough, you also don't possess sins. And you say I am the strange one because I don't have wings?-.
I could swear if it wasn't for the other angel present here, he would be rolling on the ground while laughing; aftera good minute, he managed to restrain himself: -Angels don't usually have wings, only the superior ones do, and we can retract them into our bodies to fool enemies-.
-What? General, that should be a secret, we never showed ourselves without wings and we're in Hell, there's no way this being has a good soul, we should imprison him and ask the superiors- (Guard B).
-You do know that I am the superior, right? If it wasn't for that ass of Gabriel I wouldn't even be here, and you would have no way of keeping him restrained, so just shut up; we're going back... I still have not heard your name- said Azrael while starting to walk in a direction.
-I'm Jack, so you're in a high position? Then why you're here?- I asked while walking, a big wall can already be seen in the distance... how big are these cities? From outside it seemed pretty small, but from here it looks without end.

-Well Jack, someone in a higher place than me decided that I was a thorn in his side and used a very lame motivation to send me down here- as he said that, he spat on the ground... and with this my ideal image of angels just shattered in a million pieces.
After that, we kept silent along the road, he will probably ask some questions after reaching the garrison, it seem that angels work as guards in Hell, who would have imagined it? Either it's a normal thing and the ancestor didn't mention it in his notes, or they're able to hide even from him; hopefully is the former.
After we reached a wall, we entered inside it; so the angels found how to use light to form illusions, this explains how he's not shocked by my little trick with the shadows.
After entering in the illusion, I could see children everywhere playing; I was suspicious when there weren't childs mentioned in the ancestor's notes, I'm now glad to find out that they're not being oppressed. The choices of children are often dictated by their environment.
Azrael guided me in the Garrison, that is nothing more than a badly looking two stories building... and I that was expecting a white building with exquisite craftsmanship; I know we're in Hell but cmon, this is lame.
Azrael could probably see my disappointment and started to laugh again: -ehi, we're angels, not dwarves; our task is to protect the sentient races from the devils, our cities were built by the dwarves under the request of our Goddess, this is the best we can do by ourselves-.
Eeeeeh? Never thought about that, so even angels need to ask for the dwarves skills in construction and craftsmanship in general, the belief that dwarves are the best in such things is recognized by even them... interesting, I should visit their city or kingdom when I get out, maybe they can still teach me a trick or two.
Because the childs were scared from seeing me, I changed armor to the light weight one and stored Chaoseater in the inventory; doing so scared the guard, but childs were awed and started to follow us and Azrael didn't seem to worry about it, so it's all good.
Once we entered in the garrison, I followed Azrael to a room where he ordered some food to be delivered to us later, then we went in what I would call his own office.
He then offered me some water: -then, now we can talk about you; who or what are you? Why are you even here? How do you possess weapons such as those in this place? Ah, the food should come in around a quarter of an hour-.
As if those questions are easy to answer, should I tell the truth? Would he believe me? I'll just let him decide: -Well, do you prefer the short, believable and completely fake or the long, unbelievable truthful story?-.
He started to carefully ponder about the answer, then said: -I already know this will give me an immense headache, just tell me both, this way I'll tell you if what you will say is believable; you strike me as a person who would say something unbelievable in either case. And stop that trick of yours with the darkness, I'd like to see the face of the person I'm speaking to-.
With a thought, I dispersed the shadows which covered my face, and at the same moment I could see Azrael flinch: -sorry, you had a good reason to keep your face hidden-.
In a moment I recasted the shadows trick: -Well, the believable story is that I'm a human that came in Hell to rescue his lifelong love, but I died after entering in Hell and got revived as an undead, the seco-
-Wait wait wait- interrupted me Azrael while waving a hand -this is the believable story? Do you even know how difficult is for us angels to enter here? And we're able to do it only after the God of the Underworld and the Goddess made a pact-.
Ah, so there is that problem: -then let's say the God of the Underworld took pity on me and gave me the possibility to look for my love?-
Azrael facepalmed: -I think that your common sense is not in the right place, then what is the unbelievable story?-.
-I'm a soul sent here from another world which I saved, but because of some complications I got reincarnated as a ghoul, while the person I love got reincarnated as a princess in one of the kingdoms as a twin of my sister; so I'm trying to get out of here while also changing my appearances and growing powerful enough to protect the both of them-.
The face Azrael is showing is deadpan, as if to say "do you really want me to believe that?": -I said that it was unbelievable, you wanted to hear it nevertheless, so I just told you; if you want I can draw a truth circle and repeat it-.
Ah, now his face is saying "My common sense just shattered once again": -I don't even know what is a truth circle, and you just talk of it as if it exists and you can make it... you know what? I don't care; you still didn't tell me about how you obtained those weapons, and don't tell me you crafted them-.
It was now my turn to make a face "do you want me to invent another lie?"; maybe my face couldn't be seen, but my eyes clearly conveyed my thoughts, making Azrael sigh once again: -I'll not ask how you became a zombie from a ghoul and obtained all that strength, but what are you doing here?-.
-Do you really want to know?- I said while completely relaxing on the chair.
He looked at me with exasperation in his eyes: -no, I fear what you might say... normally we would wipe out ourselves from the memories of the sinners who come here, but I'll make an exception for you, maybe we'll cross paths again in the future; for now the food should be ready, let's go to eat outside, here is too sad as a place to eat-.
-Ah, would you believe me if I said that this is the first food I'll eat since coming here?-.
Azrael just laughed and leaded the way where the childrens are, it seem we're going to eat with everyone. After we arrived, the childrens crowded us... however they're all mute; before I attributed it to the fear of me, but now it became evident that there are other reasons: -Azrael, why the childrens can't talk?-.
A hint of sadness appeared in Azrael's eyes: -that is the price they have to pay for our protection, all the childrens here sinned one way or another, but how could we just look at them suffer here? We managed to get permission from the God to protect them, in exchange he would take their voice until the day they are to be reincarnated-.
He didn't look back to me and continue to talk: -you don't know how it was before, childrens of all races were used for the worst things; this enraged the Goddess to the point of fighting the God of the Underworld, which in the end gave us the permission to take care of them-.
The food came in, but I could see that it was too much for only us, and the childrens crowded the big pot... why does it seem like they're hungry? They should be undead, right?
Azrael shook his head: -they can feel hunger and most sensations, but we don't have enough food for all of them; here in Hell nothing grows and we can't bring food from outside, without materials we can't even build huts for them to live in, we are powerless!- in his fury Azrael punched the ground, scaring the children; some of them even began to silently cry.
Sigh, they're really in a bad situation, right? What should I do? Should I lend a hand? Doing so would reveal some of my powers for sure, and I still don't know if I can really trust angels and I'm pressed for time.
What should I do?
