Chapter 6: Missunderstandings
After travailing for two and a half months the distance to the capital of Flame Wrym Kingdom was negligible and Ban had decided to start teaching Aion about the rules of the academy the area they would live in and of the identities they would take up.
“Aion for the next two weeks I will be teaching you about the academy and other stuff. Your uncle sent me a letter with the rules for entrance to the academy and where we will be living from now on.”
What Aion learned was fairly simple they would be living with the common people because his grandfather disliked playing the games of the nobility and had no desire to interact with them any further than dealing with the children when he became a teacher.
As for the academy, the rules seamed to have changed from what his grandfather knew whereas before children would attend the academies at the age of five when their spirits manifested. Now it was at the age of eight, solely to give the nobles a chance to show off their wealth and prestige, this was done by comparing children and there growth.
Aion noticed that this greatly upset his grandfather but decided not to ask as he didn’t understand the distinction between nobles and commoners, when he was with the crows distinctions were made and very clearly but not by blood but ability and strength.
Aion also learner about the various sections of the academy, it was divided in two one division being the mages which were further divided in there respective elements and the warriors who were divided not by element but by class such as knight, archer, spearman, swordsman, assassin, and berserker.
The mages had a very selective process in selecting a child into one of is elemental divisions, the only children who were immediately moved into one would be a child who had an elemental affinity and wished to be a mage.
The selection was based on a small test made to see a persons personality, this was because different elements were easier to teach to children with certain temperaments. As each element had its own characteristic fire magic was wild and explosive, water and ice magic was gentle and smooth yet sharp, earth magic was strong and defensive, and wind magic was free. As for the other elements they were usually only practiced by individuals who created their own methods, those who were luck enough to find a guid to train that element, or from a large clan who had developed it over generations.
The warrior division on the other hand had no such thing, as long as one desired to enter one of the divisions all that person had to do was ask. Knights, archers, spearman, swordsman, assassins, and berserkers were vastly different from each other in their later stages and would be trained differently.
Knights relied on their mounts and armor while using lances and swords to fight, archers were lightly armored and preferred to keep a distance using speed and ranged attacks, spearman and swordsman focused solely on their weapon and themselves to fight, assassins would train in stealth and ambushes maximizing their attack into one quick and solid lethal strike, and berserkers focused on their body attacking while ignoring defense.

Although Aion was told not to trouble himself by worrying what his choice would be, he had already begun to make his decision, in his opinion being a mage was out of the question. While he knew that his grandfather was a powerful mage that could fight evenly with anyone, he also knew that he relied on his undead creatures to do so.
Aion wanted to be able to fight using his own understanding of battle and techniques. So that left him with what division of warrior he decided to be, thinking about the differences Aion began to go through the merits and demerits one by one first was the knight Aion didn’t give this much thought and dismissed it as a possibility as he didn’t like the idea of relying on another beast to fight for him while he hid in his layers of armor.
Next was the archer, he also dismissed this because he didn’t want to run from enemies just to attack from a distance as it countered what he was taught by David. Next were spearman and swordsman these two seemed possible but not all that appealing because of the reliance on weapons.
The idea of being an assassin was greatly appealing in his mind however because it matched what the shadow crows would do and would give him the training he would need in order to blend into the murder when he returned, his own innate gift of stealth would also be shown to its full capacity here, as his grandfather told him that anyone bellow the grand stage intermediate rank would not be able to sense his presence.
The final option he had and the one most appealing to him was to receive berserker training this was a decision not bound by logic and reason like the choice of assassin but because of the idea that by relying solely on his body he would be able to face all obstacles.
Of corse these were major misunderstandings on his part though as no true warrior of any division would rely simply on a mount or equipment but instead their comprehension of battle, skills, and elemental energy, but for now no one knew to correct him as they didn’t know what he was thinking.
If the knights of Flame Wrym Kingdom were to know this they would give Aion a sound beating before explaining that they weren’t cowards hiding behind a mount and layers of armor, especially his uncle who had made a name for himself and gained his position of vice-principal of the Royal Flame Academy through his achievements as a knight of the kingdom.
Aside form the academy, Aion was greatly interested in the area that they would live as his teacher told him that interacting with others his age would further his growth but as much as he asked his grandfather questions about who would be there and what they would be like the only response he got was that they would have to wait and see.
His teacher had also briefly spoke on the different warrior divisions but told him to choose between knight, assassin, and berserker as a knight could ultimately be a swordsman or a spearman, and archers were weak and at a disadvantage in the later ranks of the grand stage.
This only helped to solidify Aion’s desire to be an assassin or berserker but he still didn’t know if he would choose between the practical aspects of his innate affinity towards assassins or his desire to be like a berserker relying on nothing but himself while battling his enemies.

He had five years to decide what division he would be in as he was resolute in becoming a warrior and not a mage which was the choice most made at the age of five, the difference between the two was the location in which the core formed, in a warrior the core would be near the heart at the center of the chest, a mage on the other hand would form their core at the front of their brain.
But that mattered little to Aion as he was destined to become a warrior and in his mind the strongest and fiercest to ever walk this world.
Drawing closer to the capital meant that they encountered many people, Aion had noticed that lots of people would stare at the undead horses and decided to question his grandfather regarding it.
“Grandpa, stares?”
“What about stares? Is there anything you would like to know about stares?” this had been the method that Ban decided on in order to get Aion to speak more, it was simple All he did was have Aion give more detail on what he wanted to know regardless if he knew or not what he was trying to ask.
“why are they staring at us?”
“Ah those stares that would most likely be because of the undead bone horses.”Aion noticed that they had stopped moving and the carriage had moved to the side of the road now.
“Okay this is a good opportunity, lets head out.” While saying this Ban exited the carriage and Aion followed not knowing what they were going to do, it was still morning so it wasn’t time to stop and rest for the night. While Aion was trying to figure things out, his grandfather sent the bone horses back into the ground and the carriage back into his holding bag then proceeded to explain to Aion what they would be doing.
“For now we’re going to walk then after about an hour if you see a large group of carriages we’ll join them, that way you will get accustomed to being around people and with those eyes of yours you’ll need it.” This was something that they had talked about before Aion’s eyes were different from other humans, this was because he was a three eyed gray crow, he was also told that humans have would different reactions to his eyes.
So gaining attention for them would be normal and this was the best way to introduce Aion to others in a small way before they reached the city where there would be an abundant amount of humans.
Only thirty minutes passed before a caravan that looked large enough to hold a couple of extra passengers without a problem passed, the caravan consisted of thirty wagons pulled by large red horses Aion recognized as Blaze horses these horses where first ranked elemental beast, humans ranked elemental beast by first rank to ninth rank with first being the lowest and ninth being the highest.
First to third rank was equivalent to the human stage, fourth to sixth rank to grand stage, and seventh to ninth stage to the master stage these horses were at the weakest rank and were used by wealthier merchants as horses to pull carriages.
Following his grandfather to the caravan he noticed other children and wanted to co see what they were like because his teacher had told him that interacting with them would benefit him greatly, how it would help him Aion wasn’t sure, but his greatest desire at the moment was strength and if interaction with other would help him in some form he would set out to do so. Aion’s Grandfather continued walking to the front of the caravan and called out to a large bearded sturdy Looking man.
“Excuse me sir would you happen to be the leader of this caravan?” The caravan was moving at a rather slow pace, only about the speed of a person quickly walking so it wasn't hard for the to catch up to the front of the caravan. After looking at the two the Sturdy looking man answered
“Yes, my name is Ferdinand Redmane leader of the Redmane Trading Company. How I help you?” Ferdinand was a business man through and through and would not treat anyone who came looking for him with disrespect, especially someone who could make him out as the leader of the caravan with a single glance.
“My name is Ban Corvidae and this is my grandson Aion”
“hello Mr. Redmane” Aion greeted the man as he was told that proper greeting were important.
“Mr. Redmane I have decided to raise my grandson in the capital, but having been raised with no one speaking to him for extended periods of time he’s very quiet and I was hoping to tag along with your group seeing as there are other children it might help him develop better social skills. Of corse for this favor I would be willing to pay you.” Ferdinand didn’t think it over long and promptly agreed as he had more than enough room in his caravan to accommodate an elderly man and a small child.
“No problem two people shouldn't be an issue we should have more than enough space and supplies for two more, in regards to payment we'll discuss it later. For now let's go introduce little Aion to the other children.”
“Thank you for taking our offer”
“don't mention it for now let's take the boy to the others, those brats are a handful and have energy to spare so they should liven this one up.” As he finished speaking Ferdinand began to walk towards the wagon where the children were playing. When they reached a point where the children should be visible the three could see that the children were no longer playing while running alongside the wagon but instead gathering inside of it.
“the kids should be getting ready to listen to some stories, my wife loves to read to them.”
