Memories haunted my dreams. Memories of violence that felt removed. Memories that I could not explain.
There was no Crib in those memories, no nurses.
I saw blood and dead bodies, but all I felt was annoyance. I saw pictures of a person running through a desolate desert, through ruins, using something I knew was called a sword to kill the enemy. It was copper.
I had never encountered anything like it in my life.
Yet I saw copper as something novel, special. Something most tribes did not have. I did not even understand what a tribe was.
All I knew was glass in the windows of our Crib and wood, stone, rarely porcelain and many kinds of cloth and leather. I knew nurses and children and was faintly aware of the existence called mother that had given birth to us by some miracle.
And yet I knew that I was both. It made my head ache, but after what had happened to Fern I realized that an aching head was not so bad. So I tried to fight through the pain as I lay half awake, to find what this dream was trying to tell me.
Alas, I did not find it.

Of course, that’s not the only motivation, but I think it’s the most important one for me to keep in mind, especially as the author. In fact, this whole story came about because after consuming oodles of fiction, I found myself craving a very specific type of story which I couldn’t find many examples of. Then I asked myself, “why not write it myself?” and here we are. Disclaimer: In general, while I’m not writing a comedy, I do intend for this story to be funny and a bit wacky or absurd. That said though, I am using this story as a vehicle to explore some potentially dark topics including (but not limited to) slavery, speciesism/racism, and existential questions of self, consciousness, and identity. Still, I’m going to leave the “traumatizing content” tags off, because I don’t feel that what I’ve written so far (or plan on writing) exceeds the threshold that would be necessary for me to tag it thusly. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way she views the world is not the objective truth (if such a thing even exists).

Although humanoids have successfully taken over what remains of planet Earth, they are not as successful at eliminating laws from the ancients, one of which guarantees trials for humans. Vincent G220, humanoid & a court reporter is a reluctant key, deciding factor that could end humanity for good or save it.
