《Immutable》Introduction - June (2)

June dreamed of the day the apocalypse happened. She had slept through the night it passed, her schedule requiring a good night's sleep. It was around five in the morning when she woke and learned about it. Her phone had been set to tell her the news as she did her morning routine. But there was no news. Instead, her phone showed a strange message about downloading a universe or something.
June thought of it as a prank and ignored it. She changed into her jogging outfit, ready to take on the day, and then opened her front door.
A little orange lizard man stood in front of it. In its hand was a crude spear. June stared. It stared back. June blinked, thinking she was seeing things. The lizard man hissed. June slammed the door shut.
"What the fuck!" She yelled.
The sound of stone digging into wood answered in response. In a panic, June backed away.
"What is that thing." She breathed out.
Stone struck wood again.
June realized she couldn't sit around. The creature was trying to break in. What was she going to do?
"Think stupid." She berated herself.
She had knives, in the kitchen. They were something at least. She ran to the kitchen as the monster struck the door again, this time June saw splinters come off. Grabbing a knife, June searched for anything else.
The door splintered again, wood shavings bursting onto the floor. Why wouldn't this thing just go away. June opened cupboards. Inside were plates, pots, pans, but nothing hefty. She could throw them, maybe, but they probably wouldn't do much.
An idea hit her. The plates were glass, she could buy more time at least. Hurriedly, June grabbed a stack of plates and rushed back to the front door. Lucky for her the kitchen and front door were only separated by a hallway, something she hated when she bought the condo but God was she grateful now.

As the door splintered open, June hurled plate after plate onto the floor, spreading glass shards everywhere. She watched as the lizardman ripped pieces of wood off the door to create a small hole it could crawl through.
It's head pushed through, struggling to enter. June realized she made a mistake then. It appeared the little monster wasn't all that smart, and it had gotten stuck in the hole.
"You're shitting me." She cursed. All that work because she believed the thing was smart and strong enough to get through the door. She could've attacked it right now if she hadn't been clever and made a trap zone. It would take so long to clean too. And by that time the monster would probably get through.
She watched in dread as it struggled. She saw the wood couldn't even puncture the tough scales of the creature. It was only a matter of time before it broke in.
Oh, why didn't it just give up. It was obvious that it couldn't get through, there was no need to go after her. June was sure there were plenty of other things to hunt.
A pressure filled June's head. A force she didn't quite understand, but she knew she could direct. It was an alien feeling, but something she knew she could control. She felt her focus drain as she thought about the monster. She saw the lizard man stop struggling. It just sat there, with a face that said it would get out later. It lasted for a second and then the monster was back to struggling. June felt a little drained, like she had taken a slightly challenging test.
She felt the pressure again a minute later. This time, she tested it, focusing on the monster. Her focus drained as she watched the lizard slow, then rest. The same bored face appeared, a bit longer this time.

"What in the..." June whispered as mental fatigue washed over her. She was, affecting the monster somehow. Making it stop moving. Was she dreaming? June pinched herself. "Ow. Not dreaming then."
But she could use this. The lizardman was stuck, but it was only a matter of time until it broke free of the door. But if this ability kept it from moving, June could clear her stupid caltrop trap. And then she could kill the thing. If she could kill it. She'd never even gutted a fish. How was she going to kill this invader?
"No. You have to do this." She said. Steeling herself, June grabbed the broom in the kitchen and walked over with her longest kitchen knife. Carefully, she used the broom to sweep the broken plates, making a safe path to the lizardman. As she did, she made sure to use this new power she had. The lizard would struggle and then stop, only to start again a few seconds later. June noticed that the more she used her ability, the longer the lizard sat still.
Finally, she had swept away all the glass and was standing in front of the intruder. The lizardman looked up at her, trying even harder to break the door. June stared down, bringing the knife up. She couldn't help but notice how similar it was to a machete. Taking a breath, she told herself it was her or the lizard and chopped down.
She woke from the dream with a start. A piercing beep was coming from the radar near her. It was detecting seismic activity. That meant some monster was tunneling around. June grabbed at a disk next to her and bolted out of the hideout. She didn't want it to be damaged in the upcoming fight.
As she popped out of her hideout June tossed the disk away from her, pressing a button located in the middle. The device sailed, landing on the dirt. A second after landing, the disk exploded, directing all the force straight down. The loud boom resounded across the plains.
In response, a giant antlion creature exploded out near the disk. Disoriented, it turned in circles looking for prey. June drew her sword and focused her power. It was time to clear out more monsters.

The Ginsu Mage
Currently in queue: Episode 13 in progress. Set in the Aurora: Apocalypse universe.Updated every Friday. If it's not updating, I'm working on my other fictions. If nothing's updating, I ran out of whiskey. Be patient. The Gunsu Mage is a hot mess of garbage that should not be taken seriously by anyone. It’s a vaguely-GameLit spoof of Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomoni (In Another World With My Smartphone) where the MC ends up in another world and fused with his kitchen applicances, mashed up with fantasy western elements. Dungeons & Dragons meets the Wild West in an alternate high-fantasy timeline. Guns & Goblins. Cowboys & Wizards. Locomotives & Dwarves. Don’t expect great writing, accurate numbers, or common sense. Hell, don’t expect anything — just relax and let it happen.
