《Reality or Game》Chapter 15: Help the Child, Part 2

Canary POV
Today was a very exciting day for me! After a misunderstanding, I befriended these Hawk and Dove! They were super kind and played with us. Hawk was especially amazing. He taught me a lot of stuff and played with me. He was also very strong. During the Duel, I lost despite using the strategy that I defeated Razor with the first time we Dueled, although I lost every Duel to Razor after the first one.
Dove was also cool. She had a similar personality to my older sister Trice before her intelligence was discovered and gradually drew away from me until she left the house to study abroad permanently. Seeing as those were the happiest days of my life, I was overjoyed by Dove’s presence.
At around ten, Hawk called Dove and Razor for a talk. Probably adult-stuff since they asked us not to bother them. I played with the other children for fifteen minutes before Razor came out and wanted me to join their talk.
I entered the Inn and sat on the same table with the three. The aura was serious but not tense.
“Is there something wrong?” I asked.
“No. Canary, do you like Hawk and Dove?” said Razor.
“Yes! I like them both very much!” I expressed my true feelings with great enthusiasm.
“I see. Hawk wants to ask you something then.” explained Razor.
I looked at Hawk as he smiled at and patted my head.
“Do you want to join my Party, Azure Rain Forces?”
“EHH!?”
“Razor told me you wanted to join Lime Breeze, but they refused because they thought you were too young and they had many members already. So if it’s fine with you, please join us instead.” said Hawk.
I could not believe Hawk’s words. I always wanted to join a Lime Breeze to explore Reality. Since Sister Trice fitted all the requirements, I wanted to see her here since I hadn’t seen her for a long time. Razor always supported me, but the rest of Lime Breeze refused due to my age despite Razor vouching for my abilities. They said it was more of an immaturity problem than a skill problem. So given another chance, I thought about Hawk’s offer for a bit.

“I am very thankful for the offer, but I must refuse, but I’m afraid of leaving these children. Unlike if I joined Lime Breeze where I could come here with Razor every other day, joining you would prevent me from doing so.” I declined and explained my reasons.
“I have no intention of tying you up. You are free to come here as much as you like as long as the Party isn’t doing anything urgent.” said Hawk.
Hearing this, my heart wavered a bit. Nothing stopped me from joining Azure Rain Knights, but I was still hesitant in leaving the children.
“Go for it, Canary!” interrupted one of the children in the orphanage. He was Kyle, the crying boy earlier. It seemed he was eavesdropping and hiding behind the door. As he ran towards me, all the other children followed. They were all listening to our conversation.
“Canary, fight!”
“Don’t worry, we’ll be fine!”
“Find your sister!”
“You always wished for this!”
“Don’t let us tie you down!”
One after another, the other children encouraged me to join Hawk. These children who were scared of Reality were now encouraging me to play it. I always thought of myself as their leader, that I was more mature than them. It seems I underestimated them. Immature kids would refuse to let me go and beg for me to stay even if they knew what I really wanted, but these kids were selfless and realized that playing this game was what I truly wanted.
I gathered the children and stretched out my hands, trying to hug as many of them as possible. My eyes began crying as well. This was the first time I cried in front of them. I always kept up a strong front them, but it seemed the people that made me stop crying were the same as the people who would be crying again.

“Hawk… Dove… if you’re satisfied with me, then I will gladly join the group.”
A smile emerged from their faces when I said that. Razor seemed like he was about to cry as well, but he smiled at me and said, “Do your best Canary!”
“Yes!”

An Unbound Soul
When Peter suffers a too-close encounter with a truck, he finds himself reborn in another world. At first glance it is a perfect fantasy land. There's magic to play with, elves singing in the forest and a hyperactive catgirl neighbour. There's even a System that lets him earn skills and level up. But it isn't long before he notices that the world is far too perfect. Just why is everyone so nice? Can Peter accept the alien morality of this world's self-proclaimed protector, or will he seek to overthrow her? Set after the events of A Lonely Dungeon, a few hundred years after the rebirth of civilization, this is a story about an earthling falling into Erryn's new world and the subsequent struggles of himself and Erryn to understand each other. It's a slow paced slice of life, and while there are pieces of action, don't expect any immediate grand conflict between Erryn and Peter. Published here, scribblehub and amazon. Two new chapters a week on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.

Shattered World: New Game +
Monsters have appeared and are attacking. The only hope for humanity are the gods who have come to help them. Granting their chosen the power and abilities to fight against the onslaught. Almost like a video game. Specifically, the video game Shattered Earth. A little too specifically like Shattered Earth? [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Some things about this story. This is a brutal world and a gory story, the gore is described. It is also NOT a power fantasy. This story depicts an Apocalypse, and humanities attempts to overcome it. There is more stuff to be noted that are different but those would be spoilers. Just know, if you are going into this expecting a litRPG power fantasy save the world story, you will not find it.
