《Tales of Ishtar》Chapter 1 Part 4 - The mystical world of Ishtar

By now, it was evident to me, however ridiculous it seemed, that I must have been transported to this world at my death. I couldn’t tell if it actually was another world or some kind of afterlife.
Not that I would complain about it. I hated my old life, just a horrific series of failures that kept piling up one after another, forcing me into that loathsome NEET lifestyle that I could never leave no matter how hard I tried.
… But why am I not happy? Is it the fear, perhaps? Being thrust into this position means I’ve lost whatever sense of security I might have had in a previous life, and now I’m even more lonely than before. At the very least, I could finally be myself now.
I need to stop this right now. Thinking about my old life will just make me feel miserable. I’ve finally been granted a chance to start afresh. I must make it count.
Thank god I met Leif, though; he was a lifesaver. After the free drinks yesterday, I spent the entire evening grilling him about Ishtar.
He questioned me about how I wasn’t aware of these things, but I quickly brushed it off as amnesia. He made no attempt to disguise his disbelief, but he was remarkably mindful of my boundaries, so he didn’t ask any further.
That said, THIS WORLD IS THE SHIT. I FINALLY HIT THE JACKPOT. They’re capable of fucking magic. All I have to do is spend every day and night mastering magic, and I can finally live off the rest of my life as a sick sorcerer.
The way magic worked in this world was through using something called Mana, just like in those old video games.
It was some kind of energy that could be found wherever on Ishtar and was also thought to be the source of all life. Most magic may be classified into categories such as elemental, healing, boosting, and so on.

And there were plenty more, although they were less well-known or researched.
Some people were born with unique abilities that belonge only to them or their bloodline. They couldn’t be recreated no matter how much research someone undertook.
Leif possessed one himself but preferred not to specify, so I didn’t ask more.
Still, I’d sure love to know what it was.
Who knows, maybe I’m one of them as well. After all, why was I brought here?
I might become a renowned inventor or a wealthy entrepreneur using magic and my knowledge of modern technology. This might be the golden period of my life.
We had planned to go to the church today since priests possessed the ability to assess your innate abilities and affinities, thus helping you focus primarily on studying the kind of magic you could tap upon and use most efficiently.
This did not preclude you from utilising any other area, but you did, however, have to put in extra hours than those who were naturally gifted. It reminded me of how some people in high school were gifted in certain subjects and could breeze through any test with little to no effort.
Putting aside my childish/nerdy side for a moment, it wasn’t that good...
Famine and warfare were unending; for a century, two neighbouring kingdoms across the mountain chain had been at odds over the claim of sovereignty of a sacred tarn.
Apparently, after they split up over a succession dispute, they couldn’t decide who had ownership of a fucking mountain lake.
Since the kingdom we were presently residing in was created just 15 years earlier, riots had been the rule of the day.
Tayma was once just a city-state that had grown so wealthy it decided to conquer the neighbouring city-states. It was common here in Ayla to witness civilians assaulting the royal guards, setting on fire, anything belonging to Tayma’s royalty.

Recently the event that sparked the greatest uproar was when a merchant had set himself on fire in protest of the injustice that the people of Ayla had been subjected to.
On top of all that, of course, there had to be some crazy neet demon lord who declared war against the gods and humanity for no apparent reason.
Why is it that every fantasy world always has a demon lord? Humanity seems quite advanced too. How strong was he for no one to take care of him yet?
But it’s none of my problems. I’m not going to be the world’s hero or any bullshit like that. If that’s why I was sent here, hell no, I’m not exactly brave. I’m not going to change just because I have the ability to blast fire from my hands, especially for a world I don’t care about.
I’ll let that hero story to a more virtuous person. My plans here are straightforward: make some money, learn magic, live a simple life and find happiness here.
Also, move somewhere with a bit fewer wars and riots...

Majority Rule
Readers choose from a selection of options for participants of a survival game show known as "Can Anyone Beat Level 10?". Each level has some monsters to kill and a boss at the end. Treasure chests and traps are available. Treasure chests, if opened successfully, give decent weapons, first aid kits, etc. If unsuccessful, treasure chests will either explode, taking some health from player or do become permanently closed. Monsters in dungeon levels depend on the theme of the week. This game show occurs on the first week of every month. The game just showed up out of nowhere and many people were interested in it as they attended the live version of the show. As for its mysteries...well, who knows? Maybe someone will solve them some day. But, for now, let the games begin! This is a story that depends on the votes of the viewers using the poll system. I will probably wait a week or so per poll in order to accumulate enough votes. After the week is up, viewers can still vote but it won't affect the story. This is my first interactive fiction so it might not be on par with the better ones. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoyed reading this story. Thanks.

Dolores is a lucky girl with a high-level avatar in a very popular game. She did not level it up; she got it through some fortunate circumstances. She is not interested in fighting and levelling; all she wants is to have some fun and follow her own fantasies. If only there would not be all those idiots who intend to kill her, capture her, or simply use her. And those flaws in the game! Wait, what? Those pesky game characters now appear in the real world? And they can do magic? How did this happen? Adding to her troubles, her crush does not even look at her. As Dolores tries only to survive and hide between 'normal' people, she encounters stranger and stranger things that force her hand and, in the end, she has the answers to a lot of questions. It is a slow-developing story. I had a lot of fun writing it and hope to share it with you, dear reader if you also enjoy it. On the other hand, putting it in an acceptable form requires much work and energy. I intend to bring it to its end and not let it unfinished. I hate it when I encounter unfinished stories, so I understand the feeling. This is not a classical isekai story. There is travel between the two worlds, and the game world seems to be so very real... well, this is one plot of the story. This is not an MMORP game story. Part of the action happens inside a game world, but it is treated as a real world. Updates on a weekly basis, at least Monday and Friday, with additional bonus chapters as time and energy allow. Cover art: White Flower as A Dark Fairy by Darkrealmsmaiden Yolanda gracefully allowed me to use her dark fairy as cover. There are many more beautiful works of art to be discovered at her site: https://www.deviantart.com/darkrealmsmaiden Additional Grammar Trigger Warning: As a non-native speaker, I do my best. Unfortunately, this is not enough for people with a low tolerance for warped sentences and... they may want to skip the story :( Well, you have been warned :) I appreciate it when a reader points out a sentence that needs rework. That may spare a follow-up reader some pain and helps me understand where my English grammar problems are. * We thought we made the best game in Earth's history We thought we made the best interfaces ever seen We thought we made it - lifelike But it far exceeded our expectations. Dolores, I hope you're happy now. I hope you're alive now...

With his parents in shock and his best friend suffering from unbearable guilt, Damien finds himself without much support. Being unable to even take his own life, Damien struggles to get past each day, looking for something to live for. With every passing day, Damien becomes more solemn and impassive. Three months later, Damien has almost given up, but to his surprise something unexpected happens. He is given the chance of a lifetime; to take part in a study focused on researching the effects of VR games on quadriplegic patients. Authors Note: If you find that the dialogue from the prologue to chapter 5 seem to be not that smooth, I apologize for that, it was my first time writing a fanfic so the dialogue was not in a format that is ideal. However, due to reader comments and some research I will try to attempt to improve the dialogue from chapter 6 and onwards. I may or may not come back to edit the first few chapters since I would have to rewrite most of it and I would rather spend that time writing out more of the story.
