《Blinker》Chapter 3: Snake Slayer

Slimes. Slimes everywhere. Short little, bright green blobs that reach up to my knees filled the entire room. There were at least 50 of them by my estimate.
For some reason they didn’t charge at me like I expected. Instead they minded their own business and just sort of moved around like jello.
I noticed that there were small little green balls inside of their see-through bodies. I assumed that that was their weak point.
I still had my rocks in hand and so I took one and threw one at the nearest slime with the best accuracy as I could at the core in side of its body.
*Plop*
The rock didn’t even get close to the nucleus as it just floated inside of the slime. As if enraged, the slime looked in the direction where rock as thrown. Wait, can slimes even see?
Anyway, it began charging at me like a madman and it jumped up towards me as if it was going to attack me.
The slime was surprisingly quick and I was able to barely dodge its lunge at me. I quickly ran away and exited the room. The slime stopped chasing me after I left the room, which confirmed that the slimes most likely couldn’t exit the room or they didn’t want to. And I didn’t want to push them so far as to force them to come out the room.
Currently, the biggest problem is getting out of this dungeon and the only way to do that is to get stronger. So I need to level up and increase my stats.
I looked around the cave and the only thing I saw were rocks. Suddenly a flash of inspiration went through my mind. This method is guaranteed to get me quick EXP. Although there is no EXP bar, I’m pretty sure I’ll get some gains from this.
For my plan I needed rocks. Lots and lots of rocks.
After roughly half an hour of finding and gathering all the big rocks that I could find, I put them in a pile next to where the snake
pit was.
‘Hehe… I’m such a genius. Here goes nothing.’

“Umph!”
I lifted up a big rock that weighed at least 20 pounds and dropped it in the snake pit.
*Hiss!*
Several snakes shrieked in pain as I dropped the rock on them and I almost felt bad. Almost.
This was for my survival so they needed to be sacrificed for me.
It took me another 15 minutes before I a notification came up, saying that I gained one point in strength which made me happy.
I had about half of my pile of rocks left and there were plenty of snakes so I kept on going. Pretty soon another notification came up notifying me that I leveled up.
[Level Up!]
[Please distribute 3 Points]
I opened my status menu and looked at my stats.
Name: Rane Coult
Level: 3
HP: 14
Strength: 5 Agility: 9
Dexterity: 4 Stamina: 5.5
Intelligence: 5 Luck: 3
Skills: N/A
Unallocated points: 3
This time, I decided to put in two points into stamina and one point into agility to get it up to ten and so my stats looked like this now:
Name: Rane Coult
Level: 3
HP: 14
Strength: 5 Agility: 10
Dexterity: 4 Stamina: 7.5
Intelligence: 5 Luck: 3
Skills: N/A
Hmm… it seems like my HP only goes up by two points each time I level up. I wonder if there is any way to have a greater increase in HP? I knew that there were probably other ways to increase my stats by training but I had no idea how to increase my HP without leveling up and using points.
But never mind. I decided to focus on the job and hand and continued dropping the rocks on the snakes and watched them shriek in pain and die.
Pretty soon, I ran out of rocks and I think I killed all of the snakes and I gained a .5 increase in strength by the time I was done.
*Ding*
A notification came up.
[You have gained the Title: Snake Slayer]
Interesting… you can gain titles in this world.
I looked at the description of the title.
[Snake Slayer]
[For killing 100 or more snakes you gain increase damage towards snakes and +1 Agility and +1 Intelligence. All snakes you meet will have increased aggression and hate towards you.]

Woah. This was pretty neat. I gained extra stats. I guess gaining a title was pretty beneficial.
I didn’t really care for the disadvantages of this title because I was probably going to kill all the snakes I met in the future for EXP anyway.
With that done I realized how thirsty I was but ignored it and got a rock and returned to the room where the slimes were.
I began to observe the slimes and their behaviors. Nothing really stood out until I noticed the one slime I threw a rock at.
I noticed that the rock I threw was definitely smaller than before.
‘Shit… these things are acidic. They can probably decompose anything that enters their body.’
My back was covered in cold sweat as I realized how much of a close call I had back then when I taunted the slime. It could have melted my face off…
I exited the slime room and went back to the entrance of the cave and I saw that the pitfall trap, where the spikes were at the bottom concealed itself again and I threw a rock and saw that it was still there. I waited and saw that after about 10 minutes the trap concealed itself again.
I still couldn’t exit the dungeon but another Idea struck through my head.
I gathered a pile of small rocks and made a line at the edge of the trap so I know where to jump.
‘I hope this works…’
“Hey! You stupid goblins! I can’t believe you still haven’t found me yet! You guys are so retarded! I mean even I would have found this cave!”
I shouted with all my might from outside of the cave and hoped that the barrier didn’t have any adverse effects where it didn’t allow any sound to pass through.
My worries vanished because soon the three goblins from before came into view. And when they saw me the shrieked and ran towards me in anger.
I quickly ran back inside and when I reached the line of rocks I jumped with all of my might over the pitfall trap and safely made it on the other side.
The goblins however seemed a bit cautious when first entering the cave. They must have gotten the notification that they entered a dungeon but I taunted them, yelling out insults and the snarled and one of them that was holding a makeshift spear threw it at me.
Luckily it was a bad throw and had horrible accuracy, so I didn’t need to move that much in order to dodge it.
They all rushed towards me and I stood standing right where I was.
When they reached the line of rocks and didn’t show any indication of stopping I knew I won.
All three goblins fell into the trap and were impaled by the spikes and died immediately.
A ding sound was heard and I saw that I leveled up and I gained the wisdom stat which was a nice surprise for me but it wasn’t particularly useful in this situation.
Looks like my experiment was a success. It seems like I don’t need to directly kill the monsters. I just need to be the cause or something like that.
I happily opened my stat menu to distribute my stats.
Name: Rane Coult
Title: Snake Slayer
Level: 4
HP: 16
Strength: 5 Agility: 10 +1
Dexterity: 4 Stamina: 7.5
Intelligence: 5+1 Luck: 3
Wisdom: 1
Skills: N/A
Unallocated Points: 3
This time I put all of my points into strength and brought it up to eight. My goal was to have all of my stats up to 10. I wanted to be a well-balanced individual. That was how I usually liked to play RPG type games.
I grabbed the spear that the dead goblin threw and inspected it. It was certainly better than the spear that I made before as it had a sharp rock as the tip and it was a bit smoother so I wouldn’t get any splinters.
Now that I have this weapon I think I’ll take a shot at the slimes.

MANTIS: On Hiatus
Two young adults who were childhood friends are killed amidst a pandemic worse than our own. After many years apart, Rihelah was on her way to see Michael, hoping to rekindle their friendship on the day they would both lose their lives. The pair are unwittingly selected to represent Earth in a test set forth by godlike beings who are intrigued that our world gave rise to complex life without having been intentionally seeded by their kind. Michael and Rihelah are reincarnated as predatory insects upon a distant planet called Edon. Elves, Dwarves, Dragons and their kin, Goblins, Ogres, Humans, Lizardfolk, Orcs, and sapient arthropods known as Enkelyn all inhabit this beautiful world touched by magic. The tiny mantids must survive terrified and very much alone upon arrival, while neither is aware that the other has also been reincarnated upon the same island. Naked in their new chitinous exoskeletons, they must now brave the terrors of an alien world's food chain. Each will benefit from their years of experience on Earth, but they must somehow find a balance between old lives and new. Moderate mindsets and peaceful values from a mostly safe and privileged life on Earth must now contend and somehow coexist with the strange physiology of a new and unfamiliar body as well as the violent aggressiveness of a predator's mind. To top things off, the pair are about to find themselves struggling with their inner turmoil while swept up by terrible conflicts they know nothing about. Both endure the hardships of their new lives while attempting to understand and make proper use of a mysterious and terse video-game-like System that pops status notifications into their vision from time to time, but initially has no useful interface. Some of the options they are presented with sound enticing, but as with everything else in life, each choice has benefits and drawbacks... Author's Note: This story makes many changes to the original version, and readers of Mantid will find that many things in Mantis are new and different; especially after the first few chapters. I've learned a ton from writing like a madman, and also from the RR community. I appreciate you guys! :)
