《Kali Yuga》Chapter 99. Xia Yue's calamity.

Two weeks passed, Zhang Hu had heard the news from Gutian. Huang Wen and those who were at Gutian also had heard of Zhang Hu's victory over Nanping.
Couple days after they won the town, Zhang Xuan returned to Nanping, she was part of those who were sent by Xia Bao to inform Zhang Hu of their victory in Gutian.
Jokingly Xia Bao told Zhang Xuan when he asked her to be on that team, "You should tell your father to hurry. Two of those three missions already achieved. Just send someone to this town and I'll represent Huang Wen's parent to ask for your hand in marriage."
Zhang Xuan blushed and said nothing, but deep inside she was happy to hear that. Little did she know of Xia Bao's inner thought. She was still glowing when she went to see Huang Wen that day. What made someone looked beautiful? Wasn't it their smile? For a moment Huang Wen forgot of his resolution, when he saw Zhang Xuan that day. His heart raced inside his chest, as he watched her walked toward him.
"I'm going back to Nan Ping tomorrow, to tell father about your victory here in Gutian town.", she said happily.
Huang Wen smiled back, silently he spoke to himself, 'Ah... so that's why she is so happy today. Because she's going to go back to her family. Isn't it always like this? Back then she used me, in order to find her family.'
Outside he pulled her over and hugged her, "That's sounds good. So when are you going to go tomorrow?"
They chatted for quite some time. The longer they chatted, the happier Zhang Xuan was. The happier she was, the more troubled Huang Wen was. Until the time she had to go.
"Well, I'll see you again tomorrow, before leaving to Nanping.", said Zhang Xuan.
Huang Wen simply nodded. She was hesitated but then made up her mind.
She moved closer to kiss him and whispered on his ear, "I'll ask my father about our wedding day. You should prepare to go to Nanping and see my father."
She was blushing badly, quickly she pecked on his cheek and ran. Leaving Huang Wen stood there, dumbfounded by the end of their conversation. Suddenly Huang Wen felt a bit guilty and hopeful at the same time.
'Is she happy because of that?', he muttered to himself.
Huang Wen couldn't help but grinning like a fool.

That was ten days ago, since then Huang Wen was busy at establishing his authority in Gutian town. Despite his might in battle, there were people who believed that he was too young for the position. Many questioned his decision, for some he was too soft hearted while for other he was too harsh. Some believed he would be easily manipulated, some believed he was the devil incarnate. Such as was his life at that time.
Fortunately the army was fully one hundred percent supported him.
Those who saw him fought and planned the battle, had no objection at accepting him as their leader.
And the majority of the civilians, actually felt safer with him staying in the town. So despite their objection of having him governed the town, no one wanted him to leave the town. The situation made no one openly opposed his ruling. Rather than opposed it, some groups of people tried to manipulate him for their own purpose and sometimes raised some objection over his policy, in which Huang Wen was willing to listen with open mind.
Xia Bao commented on Huang Wen's willingness to listen, "You could have it easier, if you just smack some of them in the head."
In which Huang Wen laughed and replied, "I wish I could, but I must admit that sometimes I made the wrong decision."
Xia Bao listened and secretly applauded his answer. One of his biggest concern was what he would do if Huang Wen just turned into another tyrant. During those busy days, it was Xia Yue and Chen Yao who made Huang Wen's day brighter, especially Xia Yue. Her innocence and gullibility, had its own charm. With her petite body, she looked much younger than her real age.
With his busy schedule at organizing the town, he didn't have much time to meditate. The stress was built up and he took comfort in her presence. Somehow, it seemed she always appeared during the most stressful part of the day.
It seemed that Huang Wen didn't give much thought of this coincidences. He simply enjoyed Xia Yue's presence even more. All three demons were silently watching. It was a bit unusual but it seemed they were waiting for something to happen. These days Huang Wen didn't talk with them much either. If he wasn't busy at administrating the town, he would keep himself busy playing with the girls, especially Xia Yue.
He still spend two hours every night to purify his soul realm and let Fengsu to absorb the wasted essence. But he didn't spend time to talk with them three.

That day an incident happened.
It was almost at dusk, Huang Wen was in his office doing administrative work. Usually Xia Yue would be there, but this time she wasn't.
He was wondering about her when, there was someone knocking on the door. Before he answered, Xia Bao already entered and Chen Fang followed closely behind him. Xia Bao looked troubled and lost his usual calmness.
"Huang Wen, have you seen Xia Yue?", he asked right away.
Huang Wen shook his head, "No, I haven't seen her at all today. What's wrong?"
"She's missing.", Xia Bao said shortly.
Huang Wen didn't need to ask any further. Xia Bao and Chen Fang, quickly explained the rest of the story. This morning, Xia Yue said she was going to see Chen Yao. They planned to level up at the east side of the town. There were reports of some wild zombies from the people of the town, creating minor problem for those who lived at the east of the town.
Both of the girls asked permission from their father to fix the problem by themselves. Since the problem didn't seem to be serious. And, Xia Bao and Chen Fang knew well of their daughter's skill, they gave their permission.
However that day, Chen Yao didn't feel well. It just happened that both fathers were not working together that day. It shouldn't be a problem, since Xia Yue would go to see Chen Yao and cancelled their plan after found out of Chen Yao's condition. At least, that was Chen Fang's assumption. Xia Yue did go to see Chen Yao and they decided to cancel their plan. However, Xia Yue didn't return to home until now. Some people saw her went to the east side of the town.
Xia Bao didn't know anything about this. It was until he went home and found that Xia Yue didn't return yet, that he went to Chen Fang's house and learned the story.
Huang Wen quickly made a decision, "Uncle Xia, please organized teams to search for her. I'll personally go to find her now. I can move faster alone."
Xia Bao caught his hand and pleaded, "I know you can save her. Please."
Huan Weng nodded his head and promised without words. He left the town in minutes. He had lost his previous speed, but he still could ran faster than anyone else in town. Taking unusual routes, such as by passing backyards and through alleys, he could even traveled faster on his foot than riding a vehicle.
One thing he had that other didn't. That was his keen spiritual sense. As he purified his soul realm, he gained better concentration and cleared mind. As the result his spiritual sense was keener than his previous self.
Within the town, there were too many people for Huang Wen to get a clear hints of Xia Yue's presence. But once he left the town, there was less disturbance. After a while, he found it. Even though it was only a faint residue of Xia Yue's presence, he could sense it that she was there hours ago.
Quickly he followed the scent, using his spiritual sense like a hound using its nose.
Huang Wen didn't satisfy with the speed of his and for the first time in the last several days, he talked to the demons.
"Baihu, Fengsu, you go out and search too.", he silently instructed them two.
The past two weeks, Fengsu had grown strong enough to leave his soul realm. Although he wasn't strong enough to fight on his own, he was strong enough to act as a scout. He also naturally had higher speed compared to Baihu.
Without any complaints, both Baihu and Fengsu appeared and each of them quickly moved toward the direction they were sent. While Huang Wen went to check to another.
"Don't go too far from me. Especially you, Fengsu.", Huang Wen spoke through their spiritual connection.
"Understood.", both answered obediently.
With Baihu and Fengsu covered the other directions, Huang Wen didn't have to worry of following the wrong track and focus on following the one he found. It was taking some winding route. He arrived at uninhabited hills of forest.
There were hints of recent fight in that area. Branches cut and several trees had sword mark on it. He was sure that he was on the right track now. Quickly Huang Wen contacted Baihu and Fengsu to come.
Few tens of meters ahead, Huang Wen could feel her presence nearby. He could tell that Xia Yue was in distress and couldn't help but worry for her safety. Now, that he could tell where she was, he ran faster and didn't worry of losing her track.

Shadows in the Dawn Mist
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - Winner November 2020 When a young woman is lured back to her homeland for the opportunity of a life time, she must face old fears. But never would she think that facing up to her past would change everything. Is History written by the victors, or by someone or something else...? *** I started writing this a few years ago and eventually fell out of love with it. I never finished it and my newer books are being written in different writing style, and genre with a more planned process. I decided to revisit it for the writathon and found that it wasn't as hopeless as I'd come to think. Hopefully, I've improved as a writer since them so the consistency may vary. Its been good to revisit and analyse my writing which I feel used to have some clunky and obvious dialogue which I'm trying to fix. This will always be my first novel and I hope, with a little exposure, I may come to like it again. Thanks for reading!
