《The Country of Monsters》Chapter 25

“What is wrong Gobo?? What is going on?”
“My king! My memories… My memories came back!”.
“!?!?!?”
Could it be??
“Are you talking of the memories from the place from behind the gate?”
“Yes, my king.”
“… What happened to chief?”
“But my king… you are our king. Such a title as Chief is not befitting of your status.”
“Gobo, I see that I might look like, or in fact be your king from the other side of the gate. But I have no memories of what you now seem to remember. So, until I can remember any such detail, I wish to be called Chief.”
“But…”
“Gobo, if you really see me as your king, then this is my order.”
“I understand, Chief.” Gobo’s words were full of loyalty and determination.
“What I do not understand now is why your memories came back this time, and everyone who came from the gate also know me as their king, but I still do not remember anything. One would expect memories of everyone would come back in such case. Anyway, we have more pressing issues.”
I directed my glances to the new citizens-to-be of Harren as I looked out of the corner of my eye. This is the first-time people coming from behind the gates retain their memories and also bring items with them. This is also the first time they bring what looks to be domesticated animals, those carrying the carriages stacked with crates. Even learning about their memories of what I believe to be another world at this point, due to the prophecy surrounding the caller, comes second.
“Everyone, raise your heads and stand up. In this world I am not your king, but your chief. And I order you to call me chief. Each and every one of you is free to stay here, and become citizens of Harren, or leave and find their own way. You are free to make this decision. But if you are willing to stay, I will expect the best from you.”

I think making things clearer is the best way to go for everyone. Also, given their apparent loyalty, I doubt any of them would choose to leave, but I still believe it is the appropriate thing to present them with that choice. Especially so because we do not have enough accommodation for all of them.
“Gobo, it seems like the memories are not the only things returned to you.” I say in a suggestive tone, throwing a glance at his body. When he stood up, I also notice how our heights have now become comparable.
“Yes, Chief. Indeed. But interestingly, although I regained my race and body, I did not regain my powers as a shaman.”
Of course, you did not, dumbass. It would be too OP if you had! Look at you.
“Before you tell me of your memories, I want you to group everyone for farming, husbandry, construction, logging, hunting, and mining. Unless all the things they brought are personal belongings, check them to see if we have anything useful especially for mining and logging. If they have pickaxes, arrange a warg rider group to deliver the tools to the cave. For any belongings that you cannot immediately assign to a group, come to me. I want the report of items and of the new citizens by tonight.”
“Yes Chief.”
I should go check the others to see if they also regained their memories. If everyone starts calling me king now, it will be too exhausting to go door by door to tell them I wish to be called chief. Well, I cannot say I am not flattered, but Harren is nowhere near a kingdom. But, I take pride in this enough to recruit a messenger now to deliver the chief’s orders.
