《The Endless War》Chapter 29: Betrayal

No time was wasted upon seeing the enemies that were present in front of them. Yadon yelled, summoning his ax as he swung it for the head of the closest Basilisk in view. Yadon was one of the strongest candidates among Seer so he was shocked to see that the monster had completely blocked his weapon with simply its right arm.
His eyes widened in confusion as he noticed some kind of sturdy material protruding from the Basilisk’s body, brown in color. He used great force to send Yadon sliding back against the cavern’s floor.
“Nice try, but it’s going to take more than that toy of yours to cut through my armor.” The Basilisk taunted.
“Damn… not even a scratch!?” Yadon yelled before stopping himself from drifting off.
“Don’t rush in alone we have to work together as a team if you want to walk out of here alone,” Jace said calmly, glancing at the three enemies.
Naturally, they could always retreat, but they were right there with the geo-spheres in tow it would be too much of a hassle to turn around now. Besides they probably wouldn’t be fast enough to get out of their grasps after all this was there home and they had the advantage.
“Yadon, I believe you can crack that thing’s armor. We’ll leave it to you. Isaac and I will handle the other two.” Jace stated after casually analyzing the situation. He then turned his focus towards Zain.
“I’ll provide aid. Even I won’t be able to get through that thing’s armor alone. But, with us working together it may prove possible.”
“Not that I need it, but I won’t turn down help. Now, let’s get this!” Yadon charged in once again, raising his ax to strike from the left side, forcing the monster to leap back to avoid it.

While he was still in mid-air, Zain could be seen darting around the battleground, summoning and striking with his spear in one smooth motion. There was no momentum wasted as he plunged it directly into the chest of the Basilisk, though it wasn’t strong enough to break through that sturdy armor.
“It’s futile!” The enemy stated before grabbing onto the end of the spear, using his great strength to fling the prince to the ground which caused him to roll about.
While his attention was on the fallen prince, Yadon prepared an overhead strike, attempting to aim for the head. However, he was caught off guard from a stern strike towards his gut which caused him to drop his weapon as he nearly crouched over.
“Gaaah!” It felt like what he ate this morning was about to come spewing out from the force of the blow. He had to admit this was a worthy opponent that he was fighting. He didn’t want to look weak in front of his comrades or his enemies.
“What?” He wasn’t expecting Yadon to wrap his meaty arms around him this wasn’t a friendly hug, however, he wasn’t trying to comfort his opponent, but squeeze the life out of him. He focused on his breathing, ignoring the pain in his gut as he flexed his muscles, veins sprouting from his body.
“Your armor is very tough indeed, but I don’t think you’ll be able to protect your internal parts! One can of Basil soup coming right up!” He announced but gasped as the foe went in for his neck, attempting to latch those fangs into that soft tissue part.
One should have expected certain death, but like earlier Yadon coated himself in his protective Mana, shielding himself from that potentially venomous bite along with breaking the fangs from the foe as it hissed in pain.

The perfect defense was also a perfect attack. His Mana protected him from harm and pain and now he wouldn’t feel any deterrents from strangling the life out of him. He released a beastial warcry before increasing his grip. He was taking one from their playbooks as snakes were often known to squeeze the life out of their opponents.
“Damn it!! I won’t be defeated by a lowly human! Gaaah!” The Basilisk protested, spikes growing from his armor as he tried to impale the human, but it was all for naught. Eventually, Yadon started to break a sweat before he shifted his method of attack and instead hurled the monster towards the ceiling.
Its weight collided against the ceiling of the cavern causing it to collide with an unforgiving smack before it landed roughly on the ground. Afterward, the behemoth was seen taking a knee as he panted softly. He still couldn’t keep that means of protection up for long and any extended time drained him like a battery. Hopefully, that was enough to finish him… wait was he getting back up…?
The enemy was still trying to stand, moving its hand against the concrete as it attempted to take a stand. The fact that it was able to make it back on its own two feet showed that it had resolve. It stared at the behemoth across from him, but before he could muster the strength to move, blood came rushing out of his mouth and soon he collapsed onto the ground.
Yadon sighed, grateful that it was over and not a moment too soon. He looked over to Zain who was watching everything unfold before he went to check on his ally.
“See how easy that was? I didn’t even break a sweat!” Yadon cheered.
Zain nodded, giving the man a smile before muttering something strange. “You’re easy.”
A curious eyebrow was raised as Yadon looked at the prince before he narrowly avoided a mighty thrust from that spear of his. “Whoa! What are you?”
Upon missing the strike, Zain chuckled, shaking his head before he regained his stance. “I waited too long for this. The mere act of working with you humans sickens me, but if it’s to reach my end goal then I’ll be patient.”
“What’s the meaning of this, dude!? You’re not cool with us?” Yadon glanced around at his comrades who were still fighting.
The other Basilisks chuckled. “Of course Zain would be the one to betray you. After all, if there’s anyone that would have the least amount of trust it would be him.”
Isaac and Jace glanced over at Zain while the prince ran a hand through his hair and sighed deeply.
“A mob is heading towards Castle Ingram. Everyone who doesn’t bow down will be slaughtered. My family included… once they’re out of the way only I will be able to ascend the throne and rule this region as it should have been from the very start.”
Zain’s intentions were finally revealed. How would the group survive this one…?
