《Let's Form a Party to Kill God》Mother

He hungered in the dark.
It was because the lady that smelled sickly sweet hadn't come in two days.
She called him 'boy' since he had no name, and she didn't want to give him one and grow attached. It was a passing fancy for her, a night-worker at the nearby brothel, to feed him from a skeletal looking goblin to a pale and thin young child. He didn't know his name, didn't understand much language, and reeked of excrement. A few pieces of hard bread and a dunk into tub full of cold water had been enough to check if he was at least an intelligent race.
He was growing desperate enough to violate the rule of never leaving the room in order to eat. One more night of cold starvation would probably make him give in. He should try to sleep and conserve strength, because the next day, he may be back into the alleyways of the dirty city.
The sound of the door jolted him awake. The sweet-smelling lady entered her small apartment, and opened the door to his room. Her hair was disheveled, and she looked about as tired as he was hungry.
"Here, I worked hard and got some better food this time," she said as she dropped a basket onto the floor.
She smiled as he tore into the hard bread and cheese. "Eat slowly, or you'll hurt your stomach," but he either heard nothing in his ravenous hunger, or didn't understand. The basket was empty save for a single fruit in a matter of minutes, and reluctantly, he picked up the fruit and tried to hand it to her.
Her smiled became almost saintly for a moment, as she pushed it back to him with a light chuckle. "You eat it, but slowly, alright?"
He tried to smile back, although it looked like a lopsided grimace. Maybe smiling wasn't his thing, she thought, as he slowly chewed the apple down to the rind.
"You'll live with me now, boy, and if I ever get out of this mess, I'll properly give you a name. I'll be your mother."
"Ma-their," the boy whispered.
The saintly smile returned to linger on her face.

Where is the last place you want to be when the zombie apocalypse begins? In a cemetary, digging a grave, of course - which is exactly where Gary finds himself when his world is abruptly initiated into the multiverse. And that's just the start of his problems. Due to a technical error, Gary doesn't get the same character sheet and upgrades as everyone else. Nope. Instead, Gary gets classified as one of the undead. He's a zombie now - except, Gary didn't die. And he doesn't want to, either!A LitRPG/Gamelit story of what happens when one man armed with a shovel takes on the undead hordes threatening to overrun his reality. I've set up a Patreon account here: https://www.patreon.com/gravediggergary if you'd like to support the story and read up to 15 chapters ahead. All support is very much appreciated! The underlying system on which the story runs is a work in progress (like the story itself!) so there may be adjustments to character sheets etc as the novel rolls out. Spelling and grammar are British English unless I mess up in which case it's just gobbledygook (please feel free to point out any typographical mistakes or obvious errors, I appreciate it!)Finally, this story is cross-posted on Scribblehub. St. Charles and the Children from the Sun
This story is a tale classic in its tragedy, about the foibles of Man and how he destroys the things he loves, all to prove himself superior over the Universe. In a quest to defeat Hilter during Wold War II, Winston Churchill and Franklin Deleanor Roosevelt barter with a race of serpents who come from outer space. There are a few inconveniences for the leaders of the West when dealing with these creatures. For one, they can't even talk to them, for the aliens 'speak' by manipulating light. But in exchange for the knowledge of how to build an atomic bomb, all the monsters want from us is to live in peace at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. What could go wrong with that? * * * This story is my entry in The Royal Road Community Magazine Contest * * *
