《Modern Monsters》Looking at Lawyers

A fresh new day, a new day to face the strange encounters that the universe seems to like to give me. I yawned as I was walking through the crowded market. I look at the map I bought of... What's the city's name again? Isten of course, yeah. I was looking at a place on the map labeled, "Paul Goodstins Service." It was for some lawyer or something, after all, The trial was only next week. I could've taken a futuristic bus there, but I figured might as well get some exercise and see the city a bit more. As I walked through the beautiful city I noticed that everyone was gathering in some square. I asked a random person next to me," Hey, why's everyone gathering?" The guy looked at me as if I was stupid," President Christmas is coming! Why wouldn't we be gathering?" I looked and saw a big plane-like construct. Then a man stepped out dressed in a coat as white as snow, and green hair. Everyone cheered as whom I assumed to be President Christmas stepped out. A beefy man, somehow even beefier than Dioline stepped out right behind the President. The President landed on a stage that I didn't even know was there. Then five more muscle men stepped into the stage, surrounding him in a half-circle. " Greetings, citizens of Isten. Now I know that some of you don't support your city council for voting to join my nation known as Deog, but know that you and your children will be safe. Safe from the horrors of unimaginable monsters, safe from creatures willing to eat your toenails, barf it up, and feed them back to you. Now I know that it sounds ridiculous, but I've seen such a ritual before, ridiculous right?" The crowd hollered. " On a more serious note, you will be safe from monsters, horrors, and others. That is my promise as a President, and hopefully, as long as I live." The crowd cheered. " But I'm not here to depress you with monsters, whose ready to play a game!?" I asked the guy next to me again," Is this guy for real?" The guy next to me groaned," You have been living under a rock. President Christmas loves to play games. Once he was actually a game show host." Two people were chosen to play a game with President Christmas. Turns out it was actually pretty simple. It was another marble struggle, the same as the game I played with the weird shopkeep. In the end, someone named Ben or something won. " Well folks, nice meeting you, hope you accept the rule of Deog soon if you haven't already. Have a nice day, citizens!" The president then was escorted by the pillar men to a hotel. I thought to myself, huh pretty weird president. Then I continued on my way.

I finally arrived at the building. It was a small one, though fancy. I went through and looked inside. It was old and rustic. I sat down on a bench and waited. Eventually, someone with a tie with a smile came through. " Hello! Are you a client for me?" I asked him," Are you, Paul?" " Of course! Haven't you seen the commercials? And my client's good positive news about me?" " Never heard of you," I admitted. Paul seemed a bit, sad? " Alright, what do you want?" " I have a case next week, and I need a lawyer." " You came to the right place! What did you do?" "An old man attacked me, and he hurt himself." " Easy enough, that'll be 2500 credits." I jumped. That would be a lot out of my 9000 credits. " Trust me, you'll have double that when the cases finished, besides, I'm one of the cheapest lawyers here." I sighed and swiped my card onto a device he was holding," Thank you for your time, sir! you won't regret it!" I left the building, feeling like I was swindled.
A week passes...
The week passed by rather uneventfully, which was surprising, considering the number of events the first two days had. I still hadn't figured out what to do with my Aurline, and the strange trinkets. I went job hunting for a bit but still hadn't found the right one. I got a gym membership and started working out I guess. I was starting to get some abs, a lot better than my pre-supernatural body, but that's it. I arrived at the courtroom. Saul was with me. Some security guards lead me through what looked like a metal detector, and I took a seat at the table. No one really attended the case, so we started to case early. " Falneo Drando, you have been accused of attacking unprovoked, attempted murder, attempted stealing. What do you say about this?" " This is bull! Let me go! I will murder you little shi-" " Thank you for your words," The judge wrote something down. " Paul Goodstin, representative of Dacker Johnson, what do you say about this?" " Well, you have seen the camera footage, clearly showing Mr. Drando's injury was caused by himself. You could also tell from the audio that he wasn't provoked by Mr. Jonhson to attack him. If you go back to the crime scene the evidence supports this, so it wasn't edited." Then Goodstin went into some legal stuff and I drowned him out. Finally the judge decided. " I have decided that Faleno is guilty." " He will need to pay a 5000 fine and also serve five years in jail. " Falneo choked. " Judge, please! I don't have 5000, I give up my son and store!" The judge raised an eyebrow. " Are you sure about giving up your son? He will be Mr. Johnson's slave for the rest of his life. This is a big decision." " Yes." " Very well, the five years in jail will still need to be served." " This concludes the court. You may all rise and get out." On that note, I got out, along with Goodstin. " See? I told you we would get double! You also got a store and a slave too!" I asked him," Slavery's legal? " " Of course!" " Alright?" I didn't know what to feel about getting a slave. Whatever, it's getting dark, I need some rest. " Nice working with you, Paul. If I need some courtroom help again I'll hire you!" We said our goodbyes and Paul got in his car. I ran back home. I yawned, today was an eventful day. I got 2500 credits. And I'm now the owner of a shop. And also a slave master. Again, don't know what to think of that. I looked at the clock. There was still plenty of time to check out my shop. I ran over to the thrift shop that started it all. I looked through the wares. A lot was just jackets, shirts, and out clothing. I checked out the back of the shop. It was empty. The back was just some tables, a spinner, and a fridge and bed. I guess this was where the old man's workshop/home was. I checked the fridge. It only had mac and cheese. No wonder the old man was desperate. Now I feel kinda bad. I went outside. And face to face with a masked man. With a bunch of others. All pointing their rifles at me. " Alright, buddy. Here's the deal. Me and my friendo's are gonna rob you. Your gonna say nothing happened or else we kill you. Good deal?" " Good deal." As they were saying their speech I slowly brought out my bracelet mask and another bracelet. I wore them all. " Hey what do you think you're doing," the leader said. One of the masked people was backing away. Heh, cultured. " But before I accept the deal, can I please put on this bracelet? " The leader sniffed as if he could smell bad intentions. " Sureee." The leader said. Here goes. " I reject my humanity, MaMe ( Get it, masked men?)! " " What in the goddamned-" I felt a bloodlust like none other. I saw the creation of the planet, the fall of the dinosaurs, the age of mankind, and humans worshipping me. I saw it all. Then I realized they were someone else's memories. A voice whispered in my head," That's right, and you could be like me, if you kill enough, your connection to me is fading, please, drink them dry." I did as the voice commanded, primal instinct older than the planet took control. I did a roar to the sky as if establishing my dominance over the world. I then looked at the puny insects that I needed to crush. How dare they try to take something from me. The terrified bandits fired their weapons, but in the end, did nothing. The bullet holes closed before my eyes. I saw the cultured one running, I thought to myself, let them run, they'll spread the word of their future ruler. However, I didn't let the leader run. The leader already had a wet stain in his pants. " Please, let me go, I can give you everything I own! Money , wealth, power! " I did the primal roar once again, drinking his blood and flinging him to his small servents. I then sat on my thron- I fell unconcious.

I Don't Seem So Bright in a Well-Lit Room
The universe is a very strange place. It will take even stranger heroes to save it."Absurd. Existential. Ridiculous. Tragic. Comic. The antiheroes of "I Don't Seem So Bright in a Well-Lit Room" are a kind of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern with space packs, inadvertently colliding with their destinies against a starry background of witty wordplay. With a vision as sprawling and limitless as the loveably goofy universe in which it's set, Browning's wit, wisdom and heart are always at play, combining to form a wonderfully panoramic and very silly heroes' journey that visits every trope of its overlapping genres and draws moustaches on all of them."- Marcel St. Pierre, author of "Vengeful Hank" and "Cliché and Wind Go Hitchhiking".(Sci-fi /Dark Humour/Absurd) *Completed!
