V3 Chapter 92
“Rain!!”
Jonathan cried out in surprise. Immediately, he rushed out, jumping in the air and catching Rain who was sent flying from the impact. He glided in the air, before skidding through the wave of water as if he was surfing before landing on a wide tree branch.
“Rain, are you okay?!”
“Guha-!?”
Rain spouted a mouthful of blood, and his face was pale. The force just now was so strong, that he almost fainted.
What the hell happened?
“Noir! How is she?!”
Rain struggled from Jonathan’s arms and turned towards Noir.
The Winged Evil Serpent was lying on the ground, with a large wound on its body. However, fortunately, the wound seemed shallow, and the Winged Evil Serpent doesn’t seem to be that badly hurt. Rather, it’s even angrier. It stood up, let out a loud hiss, and once again charged toward the river, seemly furious for its prestige had been challenged.
“Noir, wait!”
Rain tried to stop it, but he stumbled, and his vision turned blurry. It seems like the impact just now had caused him a concussion, losing his sense of balance.
“…Don’t push it. Here, drink this,”
Jonathan took out a healing potion.
But, Rain shook his head and refused it,
“I’m fine,”
He doesn’t need it. He was already starting to recover. His [Self-recovery] is above that of normal people. Not to mention, there was no wound, only a slight concussion. He was able to recover almost immediately.
Nevertheless, he still placed his hand against his chest and used [Health Recovery] skill on himself. Using a skill is much better than wasting a valuable potion for a small injury like this.
Jonathan look at Rain’s healing skill in amazement. A healing skill can be said to be possessed by a Holy Child. Even the churches would scamper to take one at the moment they were proven to be a possessor of a healing skill.
But, Rain already has two incredible extra skills, so how could he have another rare extra skill?
Just how many extra skills does this boy have?
In the first place, what Class does this boy possess that enabled him to use a sword, bow, and magic simultaneously?
No matter how Jonathan tries to understand what and who Rain is, the more he couldn’t understand him.
When you thought you seemed to have already grasped the truth, suddenly, the next moment, you realize what you have seen is just the tip of the iceberg.
How terrifying… just what kind of genius is this boy supposed to be?
Noir, the Winged Evil Serpent let out a provoking hiss towards the river before diving back into the water.
Booom!
Suddenly, from the water, a massive explosion rang out, and something burst out from the river.
“No way…”
“What the hell is that?!”
Rain’s eyebrows furrowed.
What came out of the river was a massive octopus-like monster.
No wonder the tentacles that coiled around Noir a while ago seemed to be familiar, even having suckers that stick to her scales, causing for the giant serpent to have a difficult time extricating itself from the opponent’s coil.
However, why is there an octopus on a river?!

Noir spat out a massive amount of purple liquid from her mouth and into the river. Immediately the giant octopus let out a painful shriek, its skin started to sizzle in smoke as if burning.
The water around it was immediately dyed purple, and the fishes, monsters, and even Fishmen that were touched by this purple liquid died after.
[Poison Spit].
The toxicity of Noir’s poison was horrifying.
However, the giant octopus remains undaunted and still alive. It seems like, similar to Noir, this giant Octopus also possesses a Poison Attribute that it doesn’t fear the Winged Serpent at all. It dived underwater, head first, and then spread its tentacles like a blooming flower.
What followed after was incredible, as the poisoned water seemed to have been sucked into a vortex, and then, with a blasting explosion, a sphere of purple-dyed water came out, shooting into the air, before raining down on the ground.
It had expelled all the poisoned water from the river in one action!
Jonathan’s eyes widened in fear, and so were the others.
This was the horrifying poison of a Winged Evil Serpent. Even a Lv2 Antidote Potion can hardly cure it. They immediately hide behind trees, while Jin and Zia hide behind Roel who was closer.
Large blobs of poisoned water started coming down on them, splashing on the ground and corroding everything it touches.
Jonathan and Rain who were protecting Cyan also hide. Fortunately, the tree of the Desolate Cave is sturdy and massive that they seemed to be walls with large roofs or canopies. Nevertheless, the sturdy trees started to melt and broke the moment the poisoned water splashed on them.
The corroding power of the Winged Evil Serpent's Poison is truly no joke.
The battle of the titans.
That’s what Rain felt while watching the battle of Noir and the massive Octopus.
This part of the river must have the territory of the giant octopus. And it was coexisting with the Fishmen tribe. Or perhaps, the giant octopus was the Fishmen Tribe’s pet. Nevertheless, it was truly a very powerful monster.
Noir’s strength was higher, however, fighting in the water lowered her strength, while raising her opponent’s. Still, Noir whose confidence and pride she wore like scales, being challenged by such a creature made her even angrier.
Through their connection, Rain can feel the anger of Noir who seemed to be currently throwing a tantrum.
She didn’t retreat, and instead, swum through the water and continued fighting against the eight-tentacle giant monster.
Noir’s demeaning aura surged forth like a tsunami, overwhelming the entire area. Her destructive magical energy filled the air and swept the ground!
This is the true power and presence of a Winged Evil Serpent.
A frightening demeanor continued to flood the entire forest.
The wind blew, the forest screamed, the river trembled, and the ground shook!
Looking at the raging battle of the two monsters, Rain wanted to help, however, even Jonathan who’s far stronger than him can barely see any opportunities to join the fray, with how violent and intense the two monsters’ battles were. Furthermore, the battleground being the massive, deep river made it even harder to attack the octopus-like monster.
Still, through their connection, he invoked several taming and support skills, enhancing Noir’s strength and defensive power significantly. This is the power of a Monster Tamer and Beastmaster. He doesn’t need physical contact to invoke his skills. And with his support, Noir’s strength rose significantly, even almost overpowering the opponent.

“What should we do?”
Zia asked as she came over.
“There’s nothing we can do,”
Jonathan shook his head with a sigh. Then, he turned toward the river’s direction. There, several figures could be seen coming out of it.
“...prepare yourself, it seems like we have another company,” he stared at the new group of Fishmen that came out from the river with a frown. “…and it seems like, this time would be more difficult.”
He could see further than the others. One of the Fishmen was even bigger than the rest. Even the aura it was released was much stronger than the Fishman warrior from before.
“It’s a Fishman Shaman. And it’s an Elite!”
Rain said with a grim expression upon seeing the one who Jonathan felt wary. Though he was worried about Noir, he can’t rush and interfere in her battle blindly. Especially not with the Fishmen.
The Fishman seemed to have seen them, and with a loud cry, immediately ordered the other Fismen warriors to attack, causing dozens of Fishmen to rush towards their direction with incredible fierce killing intent.
“A Shaman Elite?”
Rain nodded his head.
“Be careful, these shamans use strange but powerful magic. They are very strong!”
I heard from Elder Sister that these Fishmen were arrogant monsters that don’t listen to reason… but to think they wouldn’t even give them a chance to explain as they didn’t even try to talk about it.
It seems like a fight is inevitable.
“Now how should we play with them?”
Zia’s eyes narrowed as she stared at charging Fishmen who was now less than thirty meters away. The atmosphere suddenly became incredibly tense. They were surely outnumbered. Though they are not worried as they were confident in their strength, it’s still troublesome to face this many.
Jonathan and the others had already gotten into formation, but they didn’t dare to rashly act lest the enemy penetrates their defensive line. Under an assault from seemly over a dozen elite monsters, they would be facing a difficult time if they dared rashly, or overconfident.
The battlefield is a mess… though the forest is an advantage for us, we are still surrounded…
Jonathan thought for a moment, devising a plan to lower the casualties that might occur. Still, he can hardly come up with a good plan, not with how few of them there are compared to the enemy numbers.
The monsters in front of them weren’t like the common fodders that could be seen walking everywhere around the forests and low-level zones. No, they were Fishmen elites! A single one of them can be considered a D-class monster. Since they found a chance to surround their group, why would they possibly let them get out of this area alive?
“Sir Roel, you stay in the rear and don’t come in front. Protect Sir Jin.”
At this moment, as Jonathan was about to say his plan of action, Rain suddenly spoke.
Immediately after, Jonathan and his group turned toward him.
“Let’s retreat to the forest. Lady Zia and Big Brother Jonathan, you should do your own thing and attack. But try not to stay in one place, or you will be trapped. Don’t go too far into the enemy ranks either, or push the battle toward the river. Try to be mindful of Sir Roel and Sir Jin’s location, and protect them. Though, if you find an opportunity, try to kill the Fishman Shaman as soon as possible.”
Aside from him, Rain was certain that Jin was the only one who can cast powerful area spells. However, as a human he has limited mana, so he cannot bombard the monsters recklessly. Not to mention, he would surely be the focused target if he displayed his ability.
Even if this is not a Game, an Agro-function similar to those in games seemed to be in a play. Or perhaps, it was just a basic instinct of a living being that wanted to eliminate the deadliest enemy first?
In any case, he’s the only one among the group who can be called a trump card of theirs. The Fire Mage Jin needed to be protected, or else, even if a single Fishman elite reached him, he would be incapacitated in an instant. As a Mage, he has the weakest defense among them.
As Jonathan stared at Rain, he couldn’t make out the slightest hint of worry in his expression. He couldn’t help but admire that about him. In such an abysmal situation, he was still able to keep a cool head. Not many could do that.
Whether he was confident of not dying, or something else, anyone would have felt a hint of anxiety. But Rain seems to have none.
Of course, Rain is also a bit scared. But he was not ‘that’ scared to the point he would start trembling. He had been in many similar situations. Not to mention, his recent experience of being trapped in a seemly never-ending battle inside the dungeon. Though, in the end, they were defeated, the frightening experience has already molded his character.
Though he didn’t see himself as a strategist as good as Genghis Khan or Hannibal, he could see nothing better to do against such an enemy horde other than facing them head-on. Still, outnumbered they may be, he also didn’t fear them while in the wilderness. Even if over several hundred enemies were chasing after him, he was confident that he would be able to make his escape.
If he wanted to leave, no one in this place could stop him.
But that would mean abandoning Jonathan and the others. That is something he would never do.
In the first place, this situation is far from being called a helpless situation.
Jonathan and Zia are both extremely powerful warriors, not to mention the reliable knight guardian and Mage; Roel and Jin respectively.
As long as the octopus monster doesn't join the fray, they should not have any problem dealing with the Fishmen. Rain felt so.
That is why Noir must win this battle.

Warning: The protagonist begins the story quite cowed and meek but progresses into a more assertive and situationally dominant personality. This is partly due to growth, but also a result of the character overcoming initial shock and longstanding depression. If you think I could have handled a segment better, by all means, point it out and provide your reasoning and suggestion. Everyone's experience of depression is different, and Tim's is a close representation of my own, so it won't necessarily 'vibe' with everyone. Chapters are around 15k words and released approx 1/week over the weekend. Has been reduced to around 7.5k to 9k to better fit my schedule.[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

Flap Merganser: Space Duck
This story began as joke to troll some dude on reddit, but I fell in love with the premise and kind of went crazy writing without any direction or planning. Luckily for me, I spent a couple months convinced I was dying and stepped away from the project. I'm not dying by the way, at least not any more than in the traditional sense. But during that period of inner turmoil, I was able to step back and realize I wasn't too thrilled with the direction this was going. So I have relaunched this project under the name Duck Around and Find Out. Some elements will be the same, and some early chapters may be pretty close to what was in the original draft, but I wanted to get into the action with a bit more haste. That being said, I'm going to leave this up here for now so that you can see how this whole project started. So read it if you want to. Or don't. I don't really care. I'm just happy I don't actually have a terminal cancer.
