《One can only laugh in the face of destiny》12 - Kneeling and Apologizeing
Advertisement
While the King and Frank kneeled begging for forgiveness, mummers started around the back about what was going on. The King kneeling had never happened in the history of the City of Vera, plus Frank had never kneeled to anyone but the King, he was the most powerful person in the army why was he kneeling to this donkey? How the hell did David explode like that?
Clive did not know what to think. He had been forced into this hero business by powerful Dick that called themselves The God of Destiny, summoned to an unknown world by some assholes that kept trying to kill him. Now that he killed those that attacked him they kneeled begging for forgiveness. Clive deeply thought about what to do…
Hmmm. I should just leave and let us all die at least then I would be free to relax. Hahaha that would teach these assholes and that stupid God of Destiny forcing me, a donkey to try and fight fucking demons….. Sigh… I do not want to leave all that food! I have never even seen half of those things it all smells delicious! I wonder if there are more snacks to try in this world... maybe I do not want to die yet then, besides it always looks painful and scary.
I remember when Dennis the chicken had its head cut off he screamed and his body ran around headless for ages as Tim chased after it. I couldn’t sleep for weeks just the thought of someone chopping my head off, would I still be able to think after? Does it hurt?
Now that I think about it, a real GOD forced me to be a hero to save these assholes from all dieing. When I tried to refuse he punished my mind and soul… ~shivers~ I never want to experience that again.

How the heck do I stop these assholes from killing me then? The King and Frank seem alright but everyone else either talks about me behind my back or tries to kill me… come to think of it I wonder why I can hear everyone’s conversations so distinctly even though they are so far away and speaking at the same time. ................. Must have something to do with the so-called Gifts I was supposed to get.
King Anthon the 13th of his name saw Clive in deep thought hesitating from leaving. He quickly turned to Dalnur and Lilly pleading, "Please help me apologize to Hero Clive! We can not let him leave as the hero rises we rise as the hero falls we fall." Dalnur and Lily looked at each other still not sure if the king was serious.
Dalnur seeing the pleading in the Kings eyes exchanged eyes with Faye who stealthy and quickly set up another sound isolation spell as well as an illusion spell. Dalnur then turned around and spoke quickly, "King Anthon had us set up a sound isolation spell and was trying to warn us that the Donkey was the hero ahead of time before David, er exploded as it were. There is no way an ordinary Donkey could have done that, we all know the king and there is no way he would go this far for a joke. The Donkey is our summoned hero we must quickly stop him from leaving or we will all perish!"
Both Dalnur and Lily nodded, Eiki, Alvin and Faye seemed unconvinced but would follow Dalnur and Lily without question. Faye quickly erased the spells as they all hurried forward.
Dalnur speaking first, "Please forgive our transgressions Hero Clive. The King was informing us of your arrival before now no one in this room knew who the hero was." Lily quickly interjected, "That of course is because we were all waiting at the feast to welcome the hero or rather welcome you, Hero Clive. No one here was to touch the food before the King announced the Hero's arrival. That, of course, is no excuse for the departed David's actions, however, please understand we meant no ill will we were only trying to provide you with the first pick of every dish."

Clive glanced at the new group of six that kneeled. Still trying to make a decision when he noticed that everyone else in the room started kneeling.
"Hey Frank, I guess you all do realize how much you screwed up... I can't say I blame them looking at all this food if some random human walked up to my carrots and was about to take them I probably would have gotten mad too but at least I would not try and kill them... well not right away probably."
"Yes Hero Clive we have made a terrible mistake" replied Frank, King Anthon chimed in, "We readily accept any request you can make of us Hero Clive, so that we may be forgiven and step forward as comrades in arms. You are the hope for all of us."
"hmm I have decided Frank I will give you one more chance but I swear if this happens again I will kill you all myself, no matter how many people's guts get stuck in my hoofs." Spoke Clive releasing a deadly glare towards everyone causing a pressure of dread to cast over everyone.
"If you want to be forgiven then no one here but Me, you and the King shall eat any of the feasts, maybe those two other people who apologized. Everyone else has to walk on all fours around the room and eat off the ground. Also no using the shiny uh what are those called? Forks yeah no forks, or spoons, or knives. See how you all like not having your food prepared for you for once. Now stand up and tell these fools to stop kneeling in front of me its a lot of pressure."
Frank finally let out the breath of air he had been holding in. Just now he knew that if Clive left everyone the entire world would be doomed while he would be forced to follow after Clive he could not force Clive to fight for them if he decided not to forgive him. Donkeys were stubborn and did not forget a grudge. The words of warning from the God of Destiny made it clear you could not change Clive's mind so easily.
"Thank you Hero Clive. We will certainly accept your punishment." Replied Frank Standing up. "I feel I must warn that some people may find this punishment unreasonable and may argue but I promise on my honor if they do not accept it I will personally chop them in half," Frank said menacingly as he looked around the room ready to attack anyone that argued back.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
