《Must I Go Out to Survive This?》First Vol - Chapter 5.1 - The Diversion

Adlava vaccine, the name of a recently created object. It is named Adlava because it was developed by two important people, namely Adlon and Avalian, a name which is a combination of the first three letters of each researcher. Like vaccines in general, this is an attenuated virus, used only for the purpose of introducing the type of virus to the body's immunity. There's no other use other than that, especially if you think a vaccine can cure an existing infection.
This object was produced in one of the laboratories of East Russia which was developed directly by an expert in virology and a blessed who can accelerate the reaction of a substance, one of which is the Abara virus. Thanks to expert support, technology and the novelty of blessed kinds, this vaccine was successfully made in less than a month. However, the short development time also affects the quality and effectiveness of the vaccine. The trial of this new vaccine was given to only ten people and nine of them did have little immunity to the virus. Then, as for the other one, he becomes a zombie.
This vaccine is still classified as dangerous and arguably not a vaccine. However, due to the demands of a very urgent situation, this vaccine was forced to be distributed around the area in the hope of giving some immunity to survivors. Some of the survivors who might get the vaccine are Haruka and the other members of the Fire Nebula camp. They don't know the dangers of the unfinished vaccine, but they really need it.
However, the results of the research in the laboratory are not only the Adlava vaccine. There is also a first-generation antiviral with the same name as the vaccine, Antiviral Adlava. This antiviral is proven to be able to make twenty people who are lightly infected recover. However, there are also other subjects whose infections are classified as mild to high which cannot be cured. This antiviral still has low effectiveness.
This is what Taki was looking for. Tanaka is given an explanation by Taki regarding what antivirals are and why they are more important than vaccines in Haruka's situation. Tanaka understood it and shifted focus to antivirals, not the vaccines which are still not perfected.
Haruka, every day she's getting weaker. Thanks to the LED lights and the right room conditions, Haruka's body was able to last longer than it should have. Even so, the end point was still there, drifting away towards a few days.
Tanaka, who serves as the leader and the only person with special abilities in the camp, focuses on one agenda, collecting items related to medical needs. Yuki and the others continue various projects, one of which is food production. Makise and Taki take care of Haruka non-stop. And the days passed, until June 27 arrived.
~~~
"What? The delivery is delayed until tomorrow!"
[Yes, due to a disturbance at the main headquarters, the delivery didn't turn out as scheduled. Sorry for our inconsistency!]
This is pretty bad. I already told Haruka and the others that the vaccine and antivirals will arrive now.
"Alright, there's nothing we can do anyways!"
[Thanks for understanding!]
So there it is. Today, Monday, June 27, 2050, the plan was postponed and I had to inform the other members. They sounded disappointed and a little frustrated, but I had to keep them going.
"But that doesn't mean the vaccine won't come. It's just that it's been delayed and will most likely arrive tomorrow!"
Hearing that, everyone became even more excited, except for Taki. Somehow she looked worried since earlier.
Everyone disbanded and returned to their respective activities. During the day, it is not too hot, but the atmosphere makes the body a bit hot. Surprisingly I just feel comfortable.
"Taki, is there anything you want to talk about?"
"Tanaka, this is important!"
As expected, if she made a face like that there must be something.
Me and Taki entered the communication room. This place is getting cramped because of too much stuff.
"Hey, do you think we need to move to a bigger building like next door?"
"No, it doesn't matter now. Look at this!"
As usual Taki pointed the phone screen at my face. It was an article, or more like an article in English. She must have told me to read it.
The tritings and the letters, some I don't understand but I know what they mean as a whole. Vaccines and antivirals have low effectiveness. Well, I wasn't expecting much from this anyway.
"Basically that's the case, right? After all, it's only been a month, it's a miracle if there's already a ready-made vaccine!"
"No, that's not it... Look at the test subject list section!"
I see it. Nine out of ten people develop immunity from the vaccine and that means the other one doesn't.
"Well, it's similar to that toothpaste study... Nine out of ten patients succeed, right?"
"No, aghhh, it is not ‘succeed’, master... Take a closer look, it says 'survive' and not 'success'. Those two things mean different things!"
Wait, the directions spoken of are a bit gruesome.
"You mean?"
"One of them just didn't manage to live. So, not only did he not get immunity, but he also died and most likely became a zombie. I don't know what variables were affecting, but it would be bad if we used this vaccine!"
"... Ah, that's right. So, should we cancel the contract with the Northern camp?"
"No, try reading the one below. The antiviral one is Adlava, it says that the antiviral was successful in preventing the development of the virus, just it's not significant!"
"... So the bottom line is, we shouldn't use this vaccine and for instead just use the antiviral?"
"That is what I mean!"
I understand it. So, basically, this vaccine has not been well tested and even the results from those trials have proven not to be one hundred percent safe. But, in addition to the vaccine, I also got one small vial of antiviral for each packet. I ordered three packs, so there were at least three small vials that I would get. Which means, I ignored the vaccine and I used the antiviral.
But it feels like a waste.
"Taki, can you develop the vaccine to be safer?"
"If only developing a vaccine was as easy as building a computer. We don't have the tools, master!"
"Okay, is that in the hospital?"
"Even our state laboratories don't necessarily have them... Well, most do, but not all of them! Besides I'm not a virologist either, so I don't know what to do if I have to develop one!"
That is true. I thought too highly of Taki's abilities. She was an expert in communications, but she had sufficient medical knowledge to be considered capable. Not that expert.
"Okay, I see. So we're going to ignore the vaccine and just use the antivirals , right?"
"Yup, that's what I meant. But I have other ideas!"
"What's that?"
"We'll just use the vaccine on you, master!"
"Huh, why?"
"I heard it from Yuki… master got bitten by a zombie, right?"
Ah, so the girl already told.
"Yes, yesterday I was bitten by a zombie and somehow healed by itself!"
"That's what I mean, we can use your blood as an intermediary for immunity from the donor. So, the vaccine will be injected into your body and your immune will be reactive to it and boom. Finally we can get immunity through master's blood donation. Oh yeah, what's your blood type, master?"
"AB!"
"Crabfucker blood type!"
Well, basically what Taki thought wasn't bad. It's just that my blood type is a selfish type and can't be donated other than to the fellow blood group of AB.
"What's your blood type?"
"Mine is O minus. Wait, don't use me as the subject!"
"I won't. I didn't plan that in the first place anyway. I agreed that we should just use the antiviral!"
"Fine, but I'll try this plan anyway, so just use the vaccine, master!"
"So you want to find kids with blood type AB?"
"Yeah, that's my plan. We also need some other data besides their abilities, right?"
"Yes of course!"
That's it and I'm out of the room. Taki, that woman actually looks like a hikikomori now. Unfortunately, unlike most hikikomori, she works there. So I also have to work.
It's still noon and I've already restocked the food in the warehouse. I also need more space for other needs. Luckily there was a small building that I could use for that purpose.
So, my agenda for today is to make that area a new warehouse.
......
...
One day passed. It's June 28th, Tuesday at 06:01 am, I'm going to the North camp. At 04:12 am, they informed us that the airdrop had been taken. I went with Taki, a very useful person when it comes to negotiations. Luckily she was also up early enough, so she was a suitable member of the camp for this mission.
"Taki, can you drive a truck like this?"
"Ummmm, it's more or less like a small car. I can do that too, only I'm more proficient with motorbikes!"
"Wow, I've never actually used a motorbike before!"
"Master has never used a motorbike? Until now, you haven't?"
"Yeah, I'm just an orphanage, so it's normal for me not to have those secondary-tier things. But I once had a bicycle!"
"Everyone's past is different, huh!"
"If they weren't different, they were definitely doppelgangers!"
We arrived at the North camp. As usual, checking vehicles and checking letters. I even had some sort of identification card for this camp. I guess I'll make it at the camp too.
It didn't take long, the two of us just signed a letter which I don't know what it was because Taki checked them and we just took the package. Three packs, that much that I eventually could hold them in my hand, but since this thing needed special protection, I put it in a small safe filled with some sort of cooling stone.
Taki explained to me what the signed letter contained. Simply put, it's just a matter of submission and disclaimer from what happens when this item is used. Since Taki and I already know about the possible danger, we've decided against using it. It was just that I thought of something, the North camp must have known too, it was just that they were trying not to open up.
"They're quite cunning!"
"That's right, master. We must be independent in times like this. We can't trust each other so quickly!"
But I don't believe that this is the decision of the old shopkeeper. This must be the decision of their camp leader or someone else.
Arriving at the camp, Taki and I immediately informed all the people of the Fire Nebula camp that the vaccine was not safe to use and of course we also included evidence in the form of articles and data. Everyone understood that and I headed to the room where Haruka was. That's right, a special antiviral was used just for her. She was the one who needed the effects of the drug the most right now.
"How are you feeling, Haruka?"
"Still like sand, nii-chan!"
Nii-chan, a nickname for me which means big brother. At the time I was just joking, but it seems to have become a habit. Even when there are other people she still uses that nickname huh... Stop that stare, you damn Yuki!
"You guys can go out now. I'll take care of Haruka and I will just say it but the oxygen is expensive here!"
And I went out, with Yuki beside. Usually there's Makise accompanying Haruka and Taki, but it looks like they're working shifts now.
"Now what?"
"I don't know... Want to go for a walk?"
Yuki and I looked at each other and for some reason we decided to take a walk outside. That's right, I already have a promise to take Yuki out, I mustn't make her troublesome personality reappear. She's better now and I must keep it.
"We're heading here... I heard about it from gossip, but the owner of this apartment has a rare type of vegetable. I only heard about it from passing information!"
"Then we'll try to check!"
Since there was no work to do and Yuki was also free, we decided to go to a place across the river, the city area, to see some interesting locations. Yuki wanted to take a look at the botanical garden and the apartment indicated on the map. I myself just wanted to find other useful objects.
...
I'm Haruka Fujisaki. I felt aches and pains in various parts of my body. I lay down in a room that was like a hospital room with Taki-sensei sitting right next to me. She is playing a game on mobile.
I'm still alive and well, even though I should have turned into a zombie. Taki-sensei said that it was thanks to my body's strong immunity and being able to recognize the what so-called virus that turned humans into zombies. That's right, I managed to survive thanks to Taki, Tanaka, Makise and the others. Thanks to them, I can still eat, drink, feel pain, laugh and get vaccines or antivirals. I don't know which one is right.
"Taki-sensei, how long will it take for the vaccine to work?"
"I told you it's an antiviral... About two hours after the injection you will feel a change and it will take about two days to get the results. It's only been forty minutes, how are you feeling?"
"Better than sand!"
That's right, I feel like sand. Usually, my body doesn't feel about the weight or other things. But, this time, I feel like my body is composed of sand. Something moved from inside my body and my bones feel achy and empty. After the antiviral shot, or maybe the vaccine, I felt better in my neck and chest.
Taki-sensei, she's the one who's taking care of me right now. There are four vigil shifts carried out by Taki-sensei and Makise. From six in the morning to twelve in the afternoon and so on. Taki-sensei had her turn early in the morning and early in the evening. I really bothered them. Every four hours, I was given food. I haven't had a bowel movement in this long, but I always throw up the food after a while of digesting.
Have I really become a zombie? Or maybe I turned into a half-zombie?
No, that can't happen. Taki-sensei explained that the antivirals were working to relieve the infection only and not give me superpowers. But I want to get super powers like Tanaka. I envy him, damn it.
"Hey, look, I got another highscore!"
And Taki-sensei is bragging about her game results again.
"That's great. When I get better, if it does, I'll pass you by!"
"Don't say things like that, Haruka. Even if you're not sure, you should still believe. Now is the time to take vitamins. Get ready!"
Ughhh, I hate those pills that are the size of Makise's fingernail.
"... Aghhh, give me some water!"
I choked again. Luckily it made it in this time.
Aghhh, I keep lying here with nothing to do. I don't even have anything interesting to look at, except for Taki-sensei. All videos or anything on the internet is gone. There was no connection and the only electronic thing called the clock made me realize that my time was running out. I feel like sand.
It's been two hours and it looks like my hands are moving and so are my legs. Even though I still feel like sand, but now I feel better. Taki-sensei takes a blood sample from a part of my body, she takes it out for whatever it is. I think she is doing her research in a different room.
"AaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA~"
I tried to voice my voice and it got to quite a high note.
"Haruka, what's wrong?"
Taki-sensei suddenly came in her white coat.
"No, I was just checking my voice earlier. I'm fine!"
I'm bored.
......
...
"It is said that if we use the iron armor, we will heat!"
"That's what you're doing now, Yuki. I found armor in one of the shops and you must keep it on until the area is completely safe!"
"But it's really hot inside, Tanaka!"
Yuki, she's a 17 year old girl who is the first person I've met in this apocalypse… Correcting, she's the second person I've met. Right now, I was with her in a botanical house where most of the plants had withered or died from whatever it was. The place is also messed up like it was messed up by yakuza, or maybe yakuza zombies.
Ah, there is the yakuza zombie.
"Tanaka, over there, looks like it's blessed who became a zombie!"
Or a big blessed guy who becomes a zombie.
I killed him. The yakuza zombie.
This is my first work and I will hopefully stay around for a while. I will try to finish or at least expand on this piece of work for quite some time, expect a few hiatuses in between though, still have a bit of schooling to do. Expected release dates will probably be once a week(not sure yet) after I stabilized the novel a bit as I'm still debating on how I should handle this. I prefer fleshed-out works compared to quick releases, but it also depends on how I'm feeling. I don't have a lot of confidence in my writing skills and I believe that my writing style is a bit weird, but I do want to try my best to tell a story that's worth telling. I will gladly accept criticism but please try to pull the punches back a bit! I'm still only human after all. Very excited to work on this, please take good care of me as I proceed on this journey with all of you! P.S. If you're going into my series, expect to see cliches sprinkled here and there. I personally love cliches and a few tropes! But, that goes without saying, I want to put my own spin on them. Be ready to feel the edge!!! Heh.
