《Plumbing the Depths》Chapter 3

I had been able to figure out a spell, and now I was thoroughly uncomfortable staying on the beach. The Dwarf’s corpse burned with merry blue flames, from which dark smoke rose in the shapes of skulls… that somehow gnawed away at the darkness itself, leaving everything bathed in light that was like moonlight.
It also made every shadow loom horribly, so I was taking the staircase up. Unfortunately, I was out of shape and the stairs were made for people much smaller than me. I was crossing over my legs to stay stead on each step, leaning against the wall and away from the slowly growing fall as I made my way up… and around what seemed to be a pillar of stone in the middle of a sea of mercury, not a lake as I had originally though.
I took a breather as my other Power, Talismania came off cooldown. I looked at my first Talisman - the thing that I had needed to finally cast my spell. It had been just a patch of sand that I had been drawing mindlessly in, until Talismania activated itself, alongside the ‘Mania’ part of it.
The sand, once the Power had sunk into it, had become a plate of black glass. The idle scrawls had become crude drawings of flames and skulls - basically, it was just as edgy as the dwarf had been. It was just a little bigger than my hands, and some of the jagged edges would be enough to cut my skin, so I was careful with it.
“My… Precioussss” I hissed, into the dark, then laughed morosely at my joke. For all that it was edgy and objectively terrible, I couldn’t bear to part with it. I carefully pulled out one of the spare scalpels, and pondered using the Power on it. I immediately got a tingling sensation - I could anoint it with blood, water, lava… or carve prayers into it… or combine it with… something else.

At that point, the Power strained in my mind - I had to choose, now, or abandon the attempt.
I wanted more Talismans. In fact, I was pretty sure that I needed more if I ever wanted to see proper sunlight again.
I started humming a half-forgotten song from my youth, and power slowly started trickling into the scalpel. It flickered in the darkness, like a star about to go under. I got a sense that it would be weak, barely more than a glorified battery of sound and magic - but that was enough for me right now, I just needed a short break.
And to cast another light spell, in case there was a sharp turn that I missed in the dark.
I was stiff by the time I finished, and working out the kinks on the narrow staircase with - again - steps no wider than my foot was an entirely new kind of stressful.
Then, I activated [Synthesise Spell], and the world changed.
The scalpel and the glass plate both lit up with strange designs, and I immediately focused on what I wanted, which was light to help me get up the stairs.
Transmutation, Sound-Light, Destructive Matrix.
It needed a little something, I had learned. Once I had an Emanation available - basically a point of origin for the magic - the Matrix would spin itself up. Activating it would require something else. An Offering and an Action, to please the Muses in this case.
I carefully made a shallow cut with the scalpel, and dribbled some blood on the plate, then rapped the scalpel off it, with a resonant ‘ting’.
A moment later my heart no longer sounded in my ears. Instead, faint pulsing light began pouring off my body. I breathed out, in a way that should have been noisy, and a thin cloud of light scattered out into the darkness around me.

It was cool, but also very, very disturbing.
I put the Scalpel and the Plate reverently back into the Satchel, and made my way further up the stairs until I finally reached the top of the cliff. The light guttered out the moment my shoulders which I had been pressing against the wall were clear.
A gentle wind pushed against me - and knowing how far down it was, with reference to the weird not-darkness that I had created earlier, that led to an incredibly stressful minute as I tried to to turn, make it further up the cliff, and not fall all at the same time.
I finally cleared the top, and laid down on my back. My muscles weren’t as sore as I had expected them to be after climbing up what felt like a mile of stone.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.

Welcome to the Upward Bound System, V.2
Technically abandoned. I will be reposting an updated version of the story one chapter at a time. When the System came to Earth, it changed everything. It is a grand thing used by gods and men alike. What had once been fantasy was now a reality. People believed and so that belief gave ideas the strength to manifest. "Welcome Founder of the SCP Foundation" It stirred the gods from their deathly slumbers. Stirred by an almost mechanical voice promising them new life, and followers as countless as the stars. All it asked of them was for their help. Help with what though? The old gods, the forgotten gods, and the new gods drew breath, and then made their voices heard. On a day like any other Dante was home from college watching the Presidential inauguration with his parents. Little did they know that this day would turn out to be anything but ordinary. That this was the day everything changed. Dante is not your typical MC. While he has a troubled past, he looks forward to the future. Follow Dante, his parents, and the new friends he meets along the way as they traverse this new system world. However, before they can explore this new world they must complete, the Tutorial. (Please note: This tutorial will be part of the story. Rather than a skim of the information, you will get to experience it in depth. So the tutorial will last a good while.) A much slower style of LitRpg than what you would normally find. Follow Dante and his party as they find their world taken over by the system. Welcome people of Earth to the Upward Bound System!... With the system's arrival so too does great danger come... The tools of your survival shall be granted upon you by the system... Please note, I don't own the art. Please enjoy the story, and if you don't please leave a comment and I will try to improve the story for you. This is the second version of this story, so feel free to check out the original and compare the two.
