《The New World Rising : How to Build a Dungeon Kingdom》Chapter 19 - Plans for School

Building a school is not the easiest of tasks. Yet, when such attempt is being made within a society where almost everyone is illiterate, and where no scripture exists for the common language, it is near impossible.
Here, I ought to move carefully. Scripture is not necessary only for communications, but for recording purposes. I intend to build a kingdom – I will eventually not be able to supervise every minor detail about its progress. Especially as the populations keeps increasing, it will be more and more difficult to keep track of tasks.
To this end, we need a scripture. I intend to make the common language, which I named Echese, the official language of the New World. I will have some of the more intelligent members of New World develop a scripture for it – something easy to learn and replicate, especially because I want to keep literacy rates as high as possible.
Schools should start off with teaching this scripture to every single member of the New World. We do not have any new-born monsters yet, so we do not need to worry about children for the time being.
We can also have classes for racial languages. That is, there can be classes for goblin language and orc language. But these are not as urgent.
Hmm… I will make it mandatory for everybody to learn the Echese scripture. Learning a secondary racial language is not a must for now. We do not have much contact with other monster communities. Well, it would be more accurate to say we have only one contact. So, at least for now, there isn’t much use in making it mandatory.
I still want some to learn multiple languages though. I believe it will be beneficial in the future especially if we are looking into establishing trade routes and developing political ties with other communities like the goblin village.

As for the teachers, I think making Lilith a teacher might be a bad idea for resource allocation. She is more capable than everyone in governing New World as proven by the last three months I was unconscious. She is also more knowledgeable about the outer world than anyone in the New World. So, she is out.
Those who create the scripture are the best candidates for the teacher roles. As for the racial language teachers, we can simply select some members of different races.
It is hard to predict how long it would take to make an Echese scripture, but no classes can be virtually held before that time. Until then, we should set the infrastructure ready. I will ask Lilith to coordinate.
“Master, why do you want to have only language classes in schools?”
“What else can we have Lilith?”
“Like… tailorship, or blacksmith. More vocational training.”
“I understand what you mean and agree that it would have been much more comprehensive to include those things. But the reality is that we do not have professionals to teach them.”
I was speaking the truth. I thought about this before, but then came to the conclusion that it would be too difficult to coordinate. We do not have professionals to teach anyone – in any field.
Everyone in the New World is an amateur.
“Maybe, after completing the mandatory language training, the school can facilitate the transition into occupations.”
Intriguing – so the school would help not only develop our education, but also the wellbeing?
“I am listening.” I give Lilith my full concentration and made an unyielding eye contact.
“In many human settlements, the training for many of these vocational occupations are given and supervised by guilds. For example, a human willing to be a locksmith would join locksmith’s guild and receive training for a certain period of time. Although each city has one guild for each occupation, different cities would have different guilds for the same occupation. That is while City A might have the locksmith’s guild A, City B might have the locksmith’s guild B. Moreover, a city might not even have a guild for some occupations. Most villages do not have any guilds for example.”

“I understand what you mean, but how can we implement this.”
The amount of information I receive from Lilith is beyond measure. I am lucky to have her by my side.
“After the mandatory language training, say a hobgoblin aspires to be a tailor. School can have something alike a guild built within that will allow the hobgoblin to study with other students who also aspire to be a tailor.”
“What if we decide to build more schools?”
“Then each school can have its own ‘guild’ for occupations.”
“So, schools will be like cities in essence. Each school will have its own ‘guild’. Let us call those ‘departments’. And if a school has many students willing to be locksmiths, it can establish a locksmithing department, but if it has no student aspiring to be a magician, they will not need to establish a magic department.”
“Exactly. Moreover, there can be a guild – a community of locksmiths within the New World, that includes all members of all locksmithing departments from different schools, as well as professional locksmiths who are not affiliated with any school. This way, we can help increase our research output.”
What a freaking genius. I should correct myself: I am not lucky to have her by my side. I am ineffably fortunate. It feels more like I used up a lifetime of luck to have her. I would not regret it though.
“Brilliant idea Lilith! I am so glad to have you. I will leave this to you then.”
A faint smile appeared on Lilith’s face for a brief moment until she tried to hide it with her words in an instant.
“I will gladly take it.”
This task is in safe hands.
When this is complete, it will not only help boost our education level but also our research level thanks to the genius of Lilith. What more can I ask for?
Assuming this plan would provide with a star on both the education and research indicator on the dungeon menu, the only ones left without any stars would be the wealth and military.
Since wealth cannot be measured unless we are engaged in a trade of a greater scale, I will prioritize military. It is also more essential in case of a territorial problem.
Making an army is not an easy task either, but at least we can start somewhere. We have enough potential manpower, but I relocated most of it into mining. For the army, I do not want everyone to be a fighter – I need to find a balance between the military and citizens.
“Let us build a makeshift arena – I will hold fighting matches.”
With this I will be able to select those with the highest potential.
