《Dungeon World》Chapter 4: The New Residents

Offer residence? So what do I just send a request? Can I talk to them- oh geez! Yeah I can talk to them but it uses all of my mana. Like the whole thing, I know I’ll get more soon enough but still that’s quite a lot. Oh well, I don’t want to scare the poor things so here goes nothing.
I almost feel physical pain watching my mana bar empty, but now I can feel something, a sort of connection with the kid. “Tommy?” I ask
Tommy looks around confused. Hehe it’s kinda cute, “I am not cute!” Tommy said loudly. I’d blink if I had eyes, I’m surprised he heard that. “Ok Tommy sorry about that. I am the dungeon that was in your basement, I now have the first floor of the house to cal part of me. No, no, no! Don’t worry! I’m a nice dungeon! I don’t want to hurt anyone! I just want to help!”
Tommy looks toward the stairs to the basement, “you want to help?” He seemed skeptical, “how?”
Well to be fair I’d be pretty on edge too if some voice started talking in my head randomly, “I don’t know” I responded, “I honestly do not know how I can help, but I want to try. I can do my best to get you all some clean clothes to start. And maybe if you can take a few of my denizens outside they may be able to help you hunt down some food.” I make a mental note to tell the spiders to only web things up and no biting while out of the dungeon unless it’s something that can’t be eaten and is threatening the kids.
“Okay,” Tommy seems to relax a little, “nobody else seems to want to help so I guess I’ll trust you, how do we get this started?”

I mentally sigh in relief, “ok I’ll send everyone a residence request, accept it and it means you’ll be a part of me. Entitled to my protection and everything but I doubt I’ll be talking all that often, it took all of my mana just for this small conversation.” Slowly I’m beginning to feel the connection fade, like a rope I can’t hold onto anymore. “Looks like this is all I can do for now so just trust the rats and spiders! I know it sounds weird but just trust me, they won’t hurt you.” And the connection was lost.
I took a look at my mana and it was back to a quarter full, not bad for passive income I guess. And I focused on each kid I could find in the house, one at a time, eight in total and sent residence requests to each of them. The kids that weren’t near Tommy when I sent them seemed confused if not scared and ran to him. Seems like he’s the resident decision maker. Once he’s calmed them down they all accept, and I feel my mana disappear again.
The whole dungeon goes blurry and I can’t seem to focus on anything in particular, did I make a mistake? Suddenly things come back into focus and the kids are all in the basement. “Dungeon? Sir?” Multiple voices are calling out to me so I send panzer to them to assure them I’m ok. With the children still a bit worried but not scared anymore I start to properly explore what I can in the house.
I have a few resource nodes now! One is scrap wood? Seems it can be taken from the dining room, I guess all the broken furniture isn’t just for show, does it replenish? If so how? Not that important I guess, I also have mushrooms! But it’s in the kitchen sink, ew. I’d say come on kids but they are all alone without an adult. I can be the adult! Wait aren’t I like a few days old at best now? How old was I before? Whatever I declare I am the adult now! So let’s tidy up a bit shall we?

I set the rats to start gathering a bunch of the smaller trash and get the spiders to either get rid of the webs around or take them over if they’re just in a corner somewhere. I get a good ten spiders together and get them to start weaving some clothes. They don’t need undergarments quite yet, first and foremost is normal clothes, I have a rat scratch on the ground ‘Dress or shirt?’ Well it came out more like ‘Dres r sirt?’ But when he got the girls attention they seemed to understand. They made tallies under each one so I now knew I needed 2 dresses and 6 shirts and shorts. Make that 8 shorts, for the girls to wear under the dress until we get the undergarments made.
Spider silk should work for this right? I remember on earth they used things called silk works to make a super fine thread to make, well, silk. So I hope this works.
A few hours later and the girls have their dresses and everyone but Tommy has their clothes. The guy refused to take anything until the rest had theirs. Kids a good leader I’ll give him that. The house was also mostly cleaned, the kids just need to dust which I had the spiders and rates worn together to make a makeshift duster, just w stick with a bunch of webs on the end to help get rid of the thick layer of dust on a lot of this stuff.
Seeing as most of this stuff is getting to be handles I may as well see if there’s anything else I can do with the rats and spiders. I upgrade both of them a few more times but no noticeable difference besides getting a couple new spawn locations around the house and increased spawn rate. And I ended up confirming something I was wondering about by complete accident, one of the kids, what looked to be a goblin boy stepped on and killed one of my original spiders, a smaller one and I got mama from that. So I guess I can still get mama that way. Seems kinda like it’s cheating to me, but I suppose I shouldn’t complain too much. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth and all that.
I focus back onto Tommy again to see if there’s anything I can do for the fella, and an option pops up, ‘make voice’. What does that do? Suddenly a description box appear to give a nifty explanation:
‘Make voice’, an option to make a certain being in the dungeon capable of speaking directly to the dungeon and of speaking every possible language. The caveat being that the being will never reach its full battle potential.
So if I make someone my voice I can properly talk, but they’re weakened for it? So it would have to be someone im ok with not going into fights. I start to look around the kids and wonder who I might choose. I don’t think any of the three that originally came to fight should be chosen. I want them to be able to protect the others, seeing as they were the ones with the guts to come down in the first place. I don’t know much about the other kids besides a few names I’ve heard in passing. Well except for- aha! I know just who to choose!

The Morgulon
Greg never really wanted to become a werewolf hunter. He just wanted to prove to his father that he could do the job his family was famous for, maybe earn some money while he’s at it. He certainly never wanted to become a werewolf, or run away from home, or fight the inquisition. Unfortunately, as his brothers would say, fate has a shitty sense of humour. Updates on Mondays. "I feel like this story perfectly represents how you can't judge a book by its cover (or, in this case, concept). Edgy badboy werewolf teen romance? Yeet that concept out the window and get ready for an action-packed fantasy with an incredibly built world and logical, realistic characters." "This is a great story, probably better than any werewolf novel I've read. It's certainly not a typical werewolf story (but don't let that stop you from reading it, the werewolves are still amazing.)" "A werewolf story where people aren't constantly meeting gruesome ends that still maintains a gritty atmosphere. Realistic worldbuilding and character design make this a must read!" - RR reviews The first chapter is also on DeviantArt, more may follow.

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
