《W.A.R.F.R.A.M.E.》Chapter Nineteen: Her Name is JoJo

The following Monday, Anna entered the club room only to see Vincent with several cards in front of him. Anna grins and slowly walks behind Vincent. She moved quietly so as not to alert him. Having arrived behind him, Anna presses each of her index fingers on both sides of Vincent’s gut and yells out “Boo” near his ear. This act startled Vincent and he immediately stood up. Vincent looked around to see the perpetrator only to find Anna. Vincent wanted to get angry, but stopped at the last second, “You really shouldn’t do that to a guy while he’s focused on something.” Anna apologizes, “Sorry, sorry. I just couldn’t help myself. So, still working on your assembly, huh?” Vincent nodded, “Yeah, I’m still trying to decide what best to equip it with.”
Not too long afterward, Justin enters the room, “Hey, guys” Vincent and Anna greet him. Justin then puts his beg to the side and takes out a deck box. He places the deck box in front of Vincent, “I don’t know how you will assemble your frame, but I hope this is enough to help. They’re the excess cards that I’ve gathered over the years. I don’t have a need for them, so I thought, why not bring them to you. Maybe you can get a better picture of what to create with them.” Vincent thanked Justin and the three of them worked on his frame together. Ann turns to Justin. She had noticed his reluctance when he gave Vincent the cards, “You’re being awfully nice to Vincent all of the sudden.” Justin shrugs, “What can I say? I want to get to the championships.” Just as they were about to get busy, they heard a knock on the door. The door was opened and Mister Myers entered the club room.
“Alright people, gather round, I’ve got an announcement to make.” Anna, Vincent, and Justin did not understand what was going on, so they just went ahead and took a seat near Mister Myers. Mister Myers then continued on with his announcement, “Alright guys and gal, while the three of you were training in the Nexus, I called a friend of mine and booked a practice match. Consider it a battle of friendship, if you will. This match will be to help Vincent familiarize himself with fighting against other schools. From our practice match, I’m not too worried about Anna and Justin.”

When the trio heard that they were going to have a practice match with another school, they could not help but feel excited. “Alright, we’re going to have a practice match with another school, I haven’t fought against other schools for a while now” Anna said. Vincent cracked his knuckles, “Alright, bring’em on. My frame may still be in its development stage but I can still put up a fight.” Justin calmed the two down, “So, Mister Myers, who’s our opponent?”
Anna thanks Mister Myers, “Thank you so much, Mister Myers”. Mister Myers scratches his head and stretches, “Don’t mention it. As your faculty advisor, it’s my job to do these kinds of things for you.” Mister Myers then answers Justin’s question, “The card collectors club from St’ Agatha’s Catholic School.” The answer that Mister Myers gave surprised Anna. Vincent found it odd, “A Catholic school?” Anna tells Vincent and Justin, “Don’t look down on them just because they are a Catholic school. They were able to make it to the quarter-finals in last year’s regional championships. Furthermore, our team last year got taken out by them in the early stages of the qualifiers. In all honesty, this is going to be a tough battle.” After she said that, Anna nibled on her thumb and though, "Of all the teams, why did it have to be them. Ughh, I really don't want to face her."
The next day, most of the school was clamoring, especially the boys. “Hey did you hear? The girls from St Agatha’s are coming for a practice match against the WARFRAME club.” Another answered, “Seriously, let’s go.” The boys rush to the WARFRAME club’s club room. Anna, Vincent, and Justin were all waiting in their club room for the arrival of their opponents. Mister Myer’s looked at his watch, “It’s almost time for the match to start.” Vincent’s ears then perked up and he turned to the entrance, “It looks like they’re here.” Two girls in white button-down shirts under a blue blazer wearing a blue necktie and blue and black chequered skirts entered the room. Both of them had their hair tied into a ponytail. A third one walks in porting a similar attire except she had brown hair and it was tied into a braid and placed over her right shoulder.

“It was no wonder why all the boys wanted to watch the Catholic school girls fight. They all had the right proportions that can attract any boy.” Justin commented. The leader of the St Agatha’s team eyed Anna and sneered, “Long time no see, Anna.” Anna’s face could not help but twitch upon seeing the arrogance of the opposing team leader, “Yeah, it’s been a while JoJo.” Vincent, had question marks floating over his head, “JoJo?” Anna nodded and clarified, “Her real name is Joanna Johnson. Ever since she was a little girl, she had always had a fondness for the Warrior type frame, Joust. That earned her the nickname ‘JoJo’.”
Jojo grins, “Thanks for the clarification, Anna. But, isn’t there something you should say, in response to us accepting in partaking this practice match that you have set up? After all, we did come all the way here, and the distance between our two schools made us quite tired from our travel.” Anna grumbled, “Thank you.” Jojo placed her hand on her ear and tried to listen to what Anna had to say, “Could you speak up. I couldn’t hear you.” Anna shouted, “Thank you for coming.” Jojo smiled in delight at Anna’s frustration and anger, “Now that’s more like it.”
“I thought that you and Frank were going to be the only members of your club this year. Where is the guy anyway?” Anna answers, “He is away for the moment.” Jojo continues to rub it in, “Well, maybe he left to find a better team to join, not that I care. But from what I can see, you had to scrounge the bottom of the barrel to get members. How embarrassing. I feel sorry for you.” Jojo flaunts her arrogance on Anna, not noticing that Vincent and Justin were both holding back their anger. Jojo gave a single glance look at Vincent and Justin, “I’ve never seen either of you before, meaning either you’re both Newbs, or your skills are beyond anyone’s notice.”
Vincent got mad and voiced out his opinions, “Don’t call me Newb. I’ve got skills. You just haven’t seen them yet. Just you wait, I’ll show you what I can do.” Just as Vincent was about to continue his rant, Justin placed his hand on Vincent’s shoulder and pulled him back. "Shut up, you idiot. She was just trying to throw you off your game. I thought you were supposed to be an experienced gamer. How did you let her lead you on like that? Just forget about what she said and focus on the match.”
Justin told Vincent to take a deep breath and exhale. After doing so, he calmed down a bit. “Their words don’t mean anything, so just ignore it. I’ve had people talk about me behind my back and I ignored them after a while. There is no point in getting worked up over it.” Looking at the two boys JoJo clicked her tongue and muttered, “Tch, looks like it didn’t work. Guess we’ll have to settle this with our frames.” Anna glares at JoJo, “How about we let our frames and skills do the talking. We’ll show you what we’re made of.”

Many Minded
Synopsis: Issa Pyxis, Spacer orphan and illegal heretic, graduated from living on the streets to running with a gang years ago, but now it looks like that’s all going to change. Her inheritance, more specifically who—or what—she is, is catching up with her, and on a planet with the Emperor’s inquisitors slinking around in every shadow, nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted. What will she do? A cyberpunk story about identity, loneliness, covert infiltration, evil dystopias, and much more! Features: - Cyborgs and cyberpunk galore - This is indented to be somewhat “rational” and “hard” Sci-Fi story - Original Fiction however parts of my worldbuilding are inspired by other Sci-Fi stories (duh) Rationale: The future is cool, AIs are kickass, and questions about consciousness are simultaneously existential and yet unanswered. To me, this story is a vehicle for exploring these topics, and also, I wanted to write a story where the protagonist was unafraid of themselves and where their self is more like a git-repo than a meat computer. Disclaimer: This story primarily takes place in what we’d describe as a “cyberpunk dystopia” with some extra technocracy, autocracy, and religious fervor thrown into the mix, so there will be some “grittiness” in this story. Caveat emptor. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character and other characters in my story can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way they view the world isn’t always objective truth (if such a thing even exists) nor do their views and opinions necessarily reflect the views of me, the author.
