《W.A.R.F.R.A.M.E.》Chapter Twenty Two: Preparing for the Qualifiers

In a club room, four people were discussing the outcome between Song of victory and Silver Vanguard. “So, that JoJo actually lost. What can we expect from the team that defeated her in the practice match?” Another answered, “Aside from Anna Fischer, the other two are practically new. We’ve got nothing on them.” The only female in the group chimed in, “Maybe it was just a fluke. After all, that team didn’t even make past the first round last year. We shouldn’t have to worry too much about them.” The last person finally gave his opinion, “That’s not entirely true. You’re forgetting about the team captain.” The first person placed his finger on his chin and muttered, “Yeah, we can’t forget about that sniper.”
In another school, a group of three were also discussing the results of the practice match between Song of Victory and Silver Vanguard, “As long as we stick to our initial plan, the championship will be as good as ours.” The other members of the team nodded. In another school, a group of three were taking a break from their dirt biking, “Hey, did you guys hear about the practice match a few days ago.” The person that looked to be the leader, took a swig of his drink, “Don’t worry too much about them, we’re unbeatable on almost every surface. Those guys won’t even see us coming. The ones we really got to worry about are.” Before he could finish, the third person interrupted, “Team Warmaster.”
In order to win in the WARFRAME Championship Qualifiers, Anna, Vincent and Justin were undergoing intensive training with their faculty advisor. They were preparing for the qualifiers that would be held in a few weeks. But, the person that required the most training was Vincent. He was the only one that was the least familiar with the game. Compared to them, he lacked combat experience.
Anna and Justin just watched the screen as Vincent’s Jakqoo was battling Mister Myers’ RexCalibur in the game. They were fighting in the desert field. Both frames were dashing across the dunes, Mister Myers raised his left hand and the back of the hand opened, revealing a revolving machinegun. He fires it at Vincent. Bullets flew as Vincent took cover behind a destroyed wall. Despite the condition of the wall, it was still standing. It provided Vincent with just enough cover to protect himself from the bullets,

After the hail of bullets stopped, Vincent quickly moved from the wall and fired his missiles. While he was unleashing a barrage of missiles, he dashed in close and fired his machine gun. As he was getting closer, Vincent puts away the machinegun and takes out his ax. He gets in close and swings it downwards. Witnessing the incoming attack, Mister Myers shoots down most of the missiles with his revolving machinegun while he locked the bullets with his large sword. When Vincent came in close with his ax, Mister Myers easily parried the attack before kicking Vincent, when Vincent’s guard had been broken. After regaining his bearings, Vincent came in for another attack. “So, how am I doing?” Mister Myers complimented Vincent, “Not bad. You’re getting better at this. However.” Mist Myers fiddled with his controls, he had changed the battlefield.
The mechanical voice announced, “Field Change selected field to Space!” The moment this announcement was made, the battlefield changed. The wide-open yellow sands had been replaced by the dark empty void of space. After the field changed, Vincent felt like he lost his footing. His frame fell backward and drifted on. Vincent struggled but he was unable to get back up on his feet. “What is up with this battlefield? I can’t even stand properly.” Vincent struggled for a while but he suddenly stopped when he caught a glimpse of the scenery behind the RexCalibur. It was the Earth and it was beautiful. The sun shining light upon the world made the sight even more indescribably beautiful.
Vincent tried to get his frame to stand properly, but it was no use, “Why can’t I move in space?” Mister Myers commented, “You need to get your bearings right. Now, come at me.” Mister Myers gestured for Vincent to attack him. Vincent fired his machinegun and missiles, but they flew all over the place without hitting their target, while he drifted even further away. “Why can’t I fire properly?” Vincent tried to move in a swimming motion in order to correct his stance but he was unable to. “Is it because there is no ground to stand on.”
Anna and Justin watched the scene where the Jakqoo tried to swim in space and they both chuckled. “He’s trying the butterfly now.” Vincent activated the thrusters on his feet for a boost. He made a single burst but it sent him tumbling forwards towards the Rexcalibur. Mister Myers kneed Vincent in the face when he came close, before pointing his sword and Vincent’s throat. He thrusts the sword with great force and severed the head of the Jakqoo from its body, before unleashing a hail of bullets. The announcement was made, ‘Battle Over!’ After which the two pilots exited their cockpits.

Vincent was in shock, “I lost. And I couldn’t do a thing about it.” Mister Myers patted Vincent on the shoulder, “Vincent, you’re still thinking this is like an FPS game. It’s not. In FPS games, you play in various types of worldly terrain. You’ve only experienced battles with normal Earth gravity. But in this game, most of the battles would be conducted in places where you don’t have any footing. You need to get used to this. Space, the moon’s surface with reduced gravity, the sky, and underwater while under heavy pressure. You must be able to adapt to almost any situation. You must absolutely be able to adapt to all battlefields. Lastly, you need to perfect your assembly. Master it. Otherwise, you’d only be a burden on the rest of your team. Do you understand?” Vincent depressingly nods.
After observing the training session, Justin was about to leave. “Not that I don’t enjoy seeing Vincent get his butt whooped, but I need to prepare a few things. Catch you guys later.” Justin left the club room. Vincent stayed and looked over his cards again. He was still trying to figure out what would best fit his Jakqoo. Anna on the other hand sat down with Mister Myers. He asks, “You wanted to talk Anna. So, tell me what’s wrong?”
Anna sat on the couch with Mister Myers, she looked at her base reader and her frame, Rosenkavalier. “I want to make my frame more powerful. Vincent is going for a balanced assembly, while Justin focuses on speed. Before this, I thought my Rosenkavalier would be enough as is, but as it turns out, it is still not up to par with my opponents. Even in the battle against JoJo, it wasn’t enough to gain a victory. We only won at the last second because she dropped her guard for an all-out attack. I need advice on how to overcome my shortcomings.”
Anna took a deep breath and looked at Vincent, who was working hard going through the cards. “I always felt that I was best suited as a mid-range pilot with some support abilities to better assist my teammates.” Mister Myers nods, “I see. Your Rosenkavalier is more suited for a close-range battle. And the bits that you have are barely doing anything for support. So, you want something with more firepower. How about equipping some cannons?” Anna shook her head, “I don’t want to jeopardize speed and mobility.”
Mister Myers then suggested, “Have you thought about changing your frame base. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an Angel type you know.” Anna thought about the idea, then Mister Myers came up with another suggestion, “Have you tried making your own card. I believe that is also an option.” Anna thought about the idea, “It’s feasible. But it would have to get past inspections. Even then, my artistic skill isn’t that great.”
Mister Myers brushed the matter aside, “Who said anything about you having to do this all by yourself. I’ve got a friend. He is very connected and quite the artist. All you have to do is make a draft and write down what you want, within reason of course. Then, I’ll just pass it along, and have my friend perfect it for you and get it through inspection. He knows the rules, so I believe in his abilities. Get me your draft, as soon as possible, and we’ll see what happens.” Seeing the confidence in Mister Myers' eyes, Anna decided to have faith in him and his friend.

Cycles of Ruin
Civilizations rise and fall. Kith build them up and monsters, led by powerful dungeon keepers, bring them to ruin. For three thousand years the cycle has been maintained by the Guild of Chaos and its endless hordes of minions who—in absence of their long lost creators—have taken it upon themselves to keep the realms of the universe in balance. The Guild has grown efficient at this task, but some among its ranks have begun to ponder the utility of a universe that has been robbed of the very possibility of change. Basil von Doom is one such dungeon keeper working for the Guild, leading an army of loyal minions from one conquest to the next; burning civilizations and sifting through the ruins in search of forbidden knowledge that the races of kith were never meant to possess. But having spent more than half a century in pursuit of glory and fame—trying to live up to the legacy of his father—Basil has grown indifferent towards his work. Desperate for a worthy challenge, but bound by his duties as a dungeon keeper, he has turned his mind towards uncovering the ultimate fate of the previous master of his house and the secrets that were buried with him. Now the young Master of House Doom must balance his growing interest in pursuing the trail of his father with the responsibilities that come with running a dungeon in service to the Guild of Chaos. To remain in good standing with the Guild, Basil has even accepted the task of mentoring an apprentice dungeon keeper, a young succubus named Elnora. It is at the tail end of her apprenticeship that the story begins; with a civilization poised to fall—its greatest heroes gathering for one last assault on the heart of darkness—and Basil striking up a conversation with his apprentice that will set into motion the unraveling of the universe. ***This is a rewrite and continuation of my story that was first posted on RoyalRoad a few years ago.
