《Azure Chronicles》Chapter 35: Mana Sense Fundamentals

Zalroth intently gazed up at the clear and cloudless sky. Scarlet and Kusana were squinting their eyes as they tried to figure out what Zalroth was looking at while Snow was stroking Lola's head. Kusana climbed out of Zalroth's tail she was in, with her hair trailing out from the tail, and floated over Zalroth. Kusana grabbed Zalroth's head and stuck her face inches away from Zalroth's. She stared into Zalroth's eyes and watched the mana flowing through them.
"Kunana, could you not do that right now, I'm trying to focus." Zalroth pleaded. Kusana angerly raised her head and violently shook Zalroth's head.
"Don't insinuate Kusana is a banana!" Kusana yelled before she let go of Zalroth and flew back into Zalroth's tail. Kusana stuck her tongue out at Zalroth before completely disappearing into one of Zalroth's tails. Zalroth exhaustedly sighed before looking back up at the sky.
"What are you even looking at?" Scarlett asked before she accidentally looked at the sun and frantically covered her eyes. Scarlett rubbed her eyes as they watered up. She wiped the tears off her face and rapidly blinked with tears continuing to run down her face as Zalroth lifted his right hand in front of her face. Zalroth transferred a little bit of mana to Scarlett, making her eyes stop twitching and her face relaxed. Scarlett quickly wiped the last of her tears away before looking up at Zalroth.
"What did you do?".
"I... healed you?" Zalroth confusedly replied. Scarlett nodded her head before her face slowly shifted to a perplexed expression.
"Wait... If you can heal me, why don't you use it on yourself?" Scarlett asked.
"Well, given how the healing azure ability works; you can't transfer your own mana to yourself and even if I could healing magic doesn't work on me anyway.".

"Really? That must suck.".
"Not really," Zalroth remarked as he pointed his index finger towards the forest while keeping eye contact with Scarlett. Scarlett glanced in the direction Zalroth was pointing right as a tempest wolf (a large green wolf with a large tornado-like tail) lunged out from the woods, but before it could do anything Zalroth shot it in the head with a weak lightning bolt. Zalroth, and his tails, moved out of the way as the paralysed tempest wolf flew past them and crashed into a bush, on the other side of the road.
"How'd you know that tempest wolf was there?" Scarlett asked as she grabbed Zalroth's hand and looked down the back of Zalroth's hand like a sniper scope. Scarlett made fake lightning and laser gun noises as she shook Zalroth's hand. A small lightning discharge shot out from Zalroth's finger and Scarlett instinctively jumped back, headbutting Zalroth in the chin. Scarlett rubbed the back of her head while an unfazed Zalroth transferred mana to Scarlett.
"Mr Zalroth, that was very mean," Snow stated as she continued to stroke Nola's head.
"Yeaah, I know.". Zalroth flipped Scarlett around with the tail she was sitting on before he reached into one of Lola's tails and pulled a leather back book with a large spiral on the cover. Zalroth opened the book and flicked through the pages with one of his tails until he abruptly stopped.
"To answer your question Scarlett, I used mana sense," Zalroth stated. He turned the book around and showed the page he found to Scarlett, with Snow slowly scooting next to Scarlett with one of Lola's tails in her hands. The book stated that all living things, and some non-living things, generate mana. Although it isn't entirely known how or where mana is generated in the body, it is highly believed that mana comes from one's soul.

"Huh-huh... but what does that have to with you sensing the tempest wolf?" Scarlett asked with a confused tone. Zalroth pointed at a line in the centre of a page.
"The planet's core generates the most mana out of any entity on the planet; even if you were to gather all of the strongest mages throughout history, they wouldn't be able to match the output even one percent of what the core does." Snow reiterated. The sisters asked what that had to do with Scarlett's question.
"It doesn't directly but having that context would make it easier to understand my explanation," Zalroth said. Scarlett and Snow nodded their heads while giving Zalroth serious stares.
"Ok, as you read the planet's core generates mana which travels up through the ground. The ground absorbs the mana as it travels through until it's extremely weak and disperses into the air. As the mana flows through the air, you can sense slash feel disruptions when the mana in the air hits the mana generated from living creatures." Zalroth carefully explained. Despite Zalroth's oversimplification, the two sisters tilted their heads with confused expressions. Zalroth scratched his head but got an idea.
"Ok, Imagine the mana-filled air is like a bath full of water, do you follow?". Scarlett and Snow firmly nodded their heads.
"Good, and when you drop stuff in the water it creates a ripple and the ripple, in this analogy, is what people can sense to be able to locate living creatures.".
"Oooh, that makes sense, heh-he." Scarlett joked.
"But what about non-living creatures?" Snow asked.
"Well, it's sort of like a reverse echolocation, where you send out a wave of your mana and sense for where you don't sense a return ripple.". Snow nodded her head with Scarlett praising her for thinking of asking that.
"I assume you'll want to learn how to do this right?". Scarlett and Snow frantically nodded their heads. Zalroth chuckled and informed them he'd think of something for them to do involving sensing mana after the azure gem demonstration. While Scarlett was cheering, Charlotte was covering her face while profusely blushing.
"When it's put like that it seems so simple," Charlotte mumbled to herself.
Meanwhile, in a remote mansion, the woman with the white fox mask sat comfortably in her well-furnished living room. The dark-skinned woman twirled her long curly blonde hair with her finger while she hummed to herself.
"What a pain, not only did I lose one of my best products but also my contract with...". The masked woman ceased her complaining when a maid entered the room. The maid walked over to the woman with a wine glass and a bottle of wine.
"Lady Fox, please remember you have that meeting at five." the maid calmly said as she poured wine into the wine glass.
"Yeah, yeah I get it." Lady Fox nonchalantly remarked as she picked the glass up and drank the wine. A small camouflage black metal ladybug with blue spots on its elytron(the thing that covers its wings) took off and quietly flew out an open window. The ladybug drone flew up into the sky and towards a camouflaged Xero. The drone flew into Xero's open chest before it closed. Xero scanned the contents and video files from the drone before glancing up at the towering cliff.

Galduta
What seperates beasts from men isn't the language we speak or any such drivel taught to us in school. It isn't the way we walk or our intelligence that sets us apart. Some would have you believe that it is our ability to think and reason that makes us fundamentally different from the creatures that inhabit the world. That way of thinking, my friends, is entirely wrong. What seperates us from them and them from each other, is simply the skin that we all wear
