《Traveler's Unceasing Footsteps》Chapter 3: Library

The next day I woke up early in the morning, wash myself and eat the bread I have left.
Leaving my bag I tied the sword in my hips as I came running to the guild because of how excited I am as a new mercenary.
The guild is packed in the morning but the counter where I register just only one person lining up.
After finishing his inquiry the man in front of me left making it my turn, seeing my face lady receptionist smile.
“Oh you're early, are there something you want to ask?”
“Um, I want to ask if there are quest that someone new like me can finish easily?”
Hearing my question the lady thought about something before replying.
“Well, you have no experience fighting, quest like subjugation would be dangerous, so gathering quests might be suitable for you.”
“Gathering quest?” I asked.
“Alchemist guild and restaurants buys plant ingredients from us so there's always quest about gathering different types of it that are available to do in the guild, but do you have experience gathering plants?”
I shake my head to her question.
“Well...you can still get the quest but there's a proper way of harvesting plants or herbs and the ones who buys it checks if the said plants or herbs are properly harvested, if you've not harvest it properly the guild wont buy it.”
“I see.”
“Well don't sulk so fast, you know how to read so you can go to the library in the top most floor there you can read books about a lot of things.” said the lady receptionist.
“But I have little money left.”
“Guild library has a fee of only 1 bronze coin, it almost free.”
“1 bronze coin?!”
‘I am shocked a bronze coin for a library that is a treasure trove of knowledge! Is this what is like to be in a city?!'
“Hahaha, nice expression you have there but only the mercenary guild have a library fee this low not the one in the city.” she remarked while covering her mouth with her hand.

“But why it is so cheap?”
“I heard it's a rule created by the guild master of the main branch in the capital years ago saying that teaching the mercenaries knowledge is the same as us getting more money or something like that, and all the books that are in the guild library are the ones that are helpful for the mercenaries.” she explained.
“What an awesome person he is.” I said complimenting the man I don't know.
“Yes, he is. So are you visiting the library?”
“I am.” I said and when I am about to pull a coin in my pouch she stopped me.
“You can pay for that in the library.” Instructing me she pointed towards the upper floors.
“Yes, thank you.”
When our conversation ended, there are only few people left inside the guild, seeing the guild, I realize that I have a long conversation towards a beautiful girl like her, making smile like an idiot.
I then climbed upstairs where I found a double door with a sign posted above it, its book with a pen on top of it.
Opening the door the smell of paper that contained tons of knowledge wafted in the air. As I look around the room I notice an old man in the counter sitting in the chair while reading a book, I walks towards him and hearing the sound of me walking he looked up at me and gave a smile like the lady receptionist do while putting down the book that he's reading.
“How may I help you?”
“I want to use the library.” I said to him as I fish out a bronze coin.
“How nice to see a hatchlings like you have an interest in reading, it makes this old man happy.” he said as he took the coin.
“Well I have no clue on how to be a proper mercenary is so I plan to read some books.”
“Instead of being swayed by the passion a kid have, you instead came here to learn, what a wise brat you are.”

Hearing his compliment I scratched my head.
“You can use the library till the guild's closing, borrowing book and taking outside cost 5 bronze coins and a silver coin for deposit, you can look for the sign of the topic you want to know and if you don't find what you want ask me and last be quiet in the library or you'll get banned from coming here, remember information is precious for the people in this trade.” said by the old man as he sat down and pick up his book continuing his reading again.
I followed what the old man says searching for the plants section and found the book that I am looking for, as I am walking towards the back where the seats are, I notice the sign which says monsters, curiosity got better of me and also just in case I saw one I know what to do and so I picked a book for the monsters that mostly seen in this area.
Taking the two books to my seat I read about plants and herbs and how to harvest them, I learned that carelessly touching plants may cause you some effects that may lead to death but there are also some herbs with magical effect that can even regrow a lost body part but its something said to be legend only according to the book.
After I finished reading the book about plants and herb I closed it and put it aside.
'I now have a little knowledge about plants and vaguely know how to properly harvest them but its just a knowledge what I need is practice so that I can say that I properly know it.'
I looked at outside the window and the sun is high up in the blue sky devoid of any clouds signaling that time is already noon and I need to eat some food but then I saw the book about monsters and can't help but pick it up, its has more pages than the last book but I still opened it and read the first page of the book.
'Just a little.'
I said to myself but then I got too much into reading about different monsters because of how bizarre and awesome they are especially the dragon.
'I wish I could see one.'
I thought as I closed the book and put it down the table but as I lay down the book my stomach suddenly let out a noise inside this quiet library making me hear it clearly, I look at my stomach then I look at the window and saw that darkness already started creeping in.
'I lost track of time.' I thought.
As hunger starts to seep in to my brain I took the books back in the shelves where I got them and thank the old librarian before going down the ground floor, there I was about to thank lady receptionist but saw her counter had tons of people lining up so I decided not to and just exited the guild.
I immideatly headed towards the inn, I opened the door and saw the innkeeper lady and asked if I can already get my dinner for the day.
"Well, we can serve it to you, you just wait in the dining hall.”
She said as she get in the kitchen while I waited for the dinner, a couple minutes later a waitress girl serve my food, I eat it fast due to my hunger, finishing the food I thank the innkeeper lady and go back to my room.
As I lay in my bed I tried to remember the contents of the books preparing myself for my first ever quest as a mercenary.

They know little of what that means, but they have to figure out the rules that are now their lot, for they have little hope to escape their predicament otherwise. They have to become Professionals on their own and rejoin the Empire. They will figure out their new lives one way or another. But will there be an Empire waiting for them when the Gates re-open? Caught in a clash of empires and high tiers, they will do what little they can. They will step up and do their best. One way or another. The Infinite Labyrinth is a slice-of-life litRPG adventure set in a real historical setting. It's a hard, crunchy litrpg. Expect blue boxes everywhere, and the system itself is very mathy. It started life as a serial. I prepared some proper worldbuilding, with enough details and background for lots of different potential story arcs, but as I wrote, I realized the main story needs to have a definitive end. So, there are four books in total, for a bit under 1500 pages, plus additional side stories, and even maybe a sequel one day. The Gore tag was added as a precaution because there are a few scenes with some light gore.
