Wang Zen learns, to his dismay, that his cold and uncaring father, Wang Ton, means to send him off to Goixi Academy, a faroff school, away from his home, his town and his friend Zheng Yin. Packing his things and his companion, the Scorch Ape, Shibi, he embarks for Goixi Academy with another friend, Jun Nee.
Once in Goixi Academy, Zen realises how far out of his league he is. All the other students are leagues ahead of him in power. He quickly realises that his father, Wang Ton and a Teacher at the Academy, Lu Daomeng, had conspired to have him enrolled at this prestigious school.
Once there he meets new friends, such as Chu Jiahai and his beast Rizon; his cousins, the Jao Twins and with the assistance of his allies, he is able to help Jun Nee find her brother and her way home. He is also able gain a new teacher in Lu Daomeng and repair his broken relationship with his father and understands him better.
However, his tenure at Goixi Academy did not prove to be a smooth experience. His friendship with Jiahai became strained, resulting in his friend and Rizon leaving the Academy. Lu Daomeng becomes a fugitive for his part in a Civil War that had engulfed the country and his father dies in the same war. The government punishes the Wang Family by taking away their wealth and their status as a noble family.
However, Zen’s mother, Wang Lin proves to be a resilient member of her family, being elected as the City Lord and bringing stability to her family and the town they live in after a chaotic Civil War. Sadly for Zen, another one of his long time friendships is put to the test when Zheng Yin joins the notorious Black Mark, a group that hates nobles and the City Lords who maintain the class system, City Lords such as Zen’s mother.
