《A Home For All》Frustration

“Thanks, Mike. There’s some people here who would like to talk to you,” Suzanne said, glancing over her shoulder to the crowd at the base of the stairs. “I’ve told them a little about Haven, but I’d like you to repeat to them what you told me earlier. Could you do that for me?” She stepped aside to stand a little off from the open entrance door, leaving the servant in full view of the passengers.
The sun hung low in the sky by now; Mike’s smooth body gleamed in its golden light. Suzanne got the clearest view of the being up to now. No blemishes or any signs of wear were visible on the white material of the servant’s body. Inside it had looked like some kind of white plastic to Suzanne, but in the radiance of the evening sun it was clear that it must be something else. The surface was translucent to an almost imperceptible degree, she now noticed. The light penetrated to maybe the depth of an apple peel and was reflected again, giving it a marble-like glow, although unlike marble there were no patterns whatsoever. Mike stepped outside. It was slightly taller than Suzanne, but not intimidatingly large. The body was humanoid and had the proportions of an adult, but was completely devoid of any signs of gender. Mike’s movements were completely smooth and somehow didn’t disturb the surface of the body at all. If there muscles moving inside the body, they didn’t reveal themselves by any rippling under the skin, but neither did Mike move stiffly like a robot, with rigid limbs connected to a torso block, turning around fixed axes at the joints.
Suzanne wasn’t sure how she could ever have mistaken it for a simple mannequin earlier. She remembered photos of early computer-generated images she’d seen in old magazines: convincingly realistic in some aspects, but far too clean and wrong in small, hard to describe ways that marked them as clearly fake. Out here in the sunlight Mike evoked the same feeling of only almost being real, yet was very solid and obviously, unmistakably present at the same time.

“What the hell are you supposed to be!?” an older male voice rang out from below. It was the large, mustachioed man who had threatened to beat up whoever was responsible for their predicament earlier. He started climbing the stairs, fists balled, with an expression of barely contained fury on his face. Others, maybe encouraged by the large man’s initiative, started loudly and angrily airing their frustration as well. Suzanne’s stomach sank with a deep dread; the situation was already getting out of control.

Mortis Operandi 1- New Hire
Thank you for reading, I have to start with that. The feedback and encouragement from RoyalRoad users helped me finish my book. I left the unedited version up as I worked on editing and making it a little more polished. However the time has come for me to put it on Amazon and hopefully let other people read the story. If you have Kindle unlimited you should be able to read the story there. If you just want to order an ebook version you can do that as well. I should have a paperback version coming up. https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B07T46B4NM Again thank you for reading and helping me on this journey. It hasn't ended however, my second book which I'm hoping to do well enough that reading the first isn't completely necessary, is still being worked on here, https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/24562/mortis-operandi-2--terms-and-conditions . Any feedback, comments, even critism is welcome as I work on giving you the best version of my story. I'll leave the first two chapters up here, unless Amazon says otherwise. There should be enough differences to avoid issues though. THANK YOU! Thank you! thank you! __________________________________ Adventurers enter dungeons every day. Battling evil monsters, defying dangerous terrain, triumphing over devious traps... ... but none of them ever ask why? That arrow trap, who reloads it? The pitfall trap, who cleans out the bodies and sharpens the spikes? What if the grates get clogged, where will the blood and gore drain? When you are trying to study ancient lore or plan on conquering a kingdom, you don't want to worry about all that. You just want peace. Mortis Operandi is a different kind of company. One that celebrates diversity. One that celebrates value in individuals. With flexible pay and plenty of advancement opportunities, it is a company that knows its workers are it's most valuable asset. As they design, build, and install traps, rooms, obstacles, and repair they are a one stop shop. When a possible recall sets events into motion, the company must pivot in a new paradigm of full circle Dungeon service. The Goblin Eft No-toes has a solution that entwines ex-adventurer Elric into the business of death. *Note the above statements are forward looking statements. In no way do they promote or suggest that Mortis Operandi will project greater sales or revenue. Understand that investing in a company does involve some risks, and possibly much rewards.

The Montreal Exigency
In 1991, Montreal, Canada, an end approaches. Old rivalries clash with new necessities as the fabric of reality strains once more. ___________________________________________ This is my first shot at posting something I've written and a story set in a literary universe that I really want to take places, one of several that's been rattling around in my brain for a few years now. Constructive criticism always welcome, unconstructive criticism welcome with the caveat that I very well might ignore it. Written for Nanowrimo, because why not.
