《The Alteras Games: World Jumper Book 2》Chapter 13

Everyone wasn't sure what they had just seen. Right after the show, everything went black. Jet's flame that had been lighting the place had gone out almost the same time. "Do we have anything to light up the place?" Jeff asked.
"We still have the lanterns. Jetsford's flames were brighter, so I put them away." Kayley got out one of the lanterns. After fumbling around, she got it lit.
"Wow, how beautiful." Tulle said, waking up from her sleep.
"I thought Jet was out of magic?" Hogan looked at the new wall of crystals. He walked over and put a hand on it. With a very manly squeal, he pulled his hand away. "The water may look like crystals, but it's most definitely ice."
Jeff noticed Jet on the ground and ran over to him. Jet's body was completely limp and cold. "Jet, you fool."
Kayley walked over and checked on him as well. "I don't think I've ever known Jetsford to be so cold. He always walks around without a jacket. Better get him covered up." She reached up and touched her earring out of habit. A long red coat appeared, and a white scarf.
"Should we bandage his arm?" Jeff asked as he looked it over.
"I don't know. What did he do to his arm?" Kayley felt the cracks. They weren't hard like she thought they would be. She followed the cracks all up his arm and to his neck. "Whatever he did can not be good for his health. I'll bandage him up. Everyone else gets some sleep. We leave in two hours."
Jeff picked up one of the small water crystals. 'My friend, what have you done?' He thought, then pocketed the crystal. "Agreed, two hours, then we head out. Kayley, let's get Jet fixed up. We will all need to get some sleep."
They got Jet patched up and made a fire. Jeff kind of wondered how much stuff was in Kayley's earrings. Why did she even keep wood for a fire? He gave up and went to sleep, leaving nobody to guard them. Since they had all fallen asleep, nobody knew how long they had all slept.
"Alright, now what do we do about the slippery ice?" Hogan asked, slipping around on it.
"Great, it's one thing after another," Kayley said groggily.
"We slide," Jeff said.
Everyone looked at Jeff as if he had went nuts. "Makes sense." Tulle smiled.
"Have any of you heard of ice skating?" Jeff asked with a menacing grin.
Jeff had Jet tied to his back while skating circles around Kayley. Apparently, she was the only one he hadn't done any ice skating. "Why is this so hard?" She complained.
Tulle skated up beside Kayley. "It's not as hard as you think. With your balance, it should be easy." She emphasized this by showing that she could skate with one arm in a sling.
"Stay close, Tulle, don't get out of the sight of the light," Jeff said, then looked up at the flame above them. Somehow Jet had created it before they had left. He was even keeping it up while they skated across the ice. 'If he can make us some light. Why is he still asleep?' Jeff sighed.

It only took a few more hours for Kayley to get used to skating. Then Jeff had to tell her to stay in the light. Now he was the slowest of them with Jet on his back. Although Jet felt too light, that was accounting for the missing arm. When he looked down, he noticed water on the ice. "Is it starting to melt?"
"Oh, you noticed." Kayley was beside him and overheard.
Jeff pulled the small shard out of his pocket. "Can't be melting. This little shard has been in my pocket this whole time." He showed it to Kayley. "This should have melted by now."
"It's just the water filling over the ice. So please try to make it as far as you can before you can't skate anymore." Jet woke for a few seconds, then went back to sleep.
"Makes sense. I guess we better pick up the pace." Not that Jeff had been slacking.
"Did Jetsford just wake up to talk and go back to sleep?" Kayley asked.
"Considering how he sounded, I'd bet he is in quite a bit of pain. He is also much lighter than he should be." Jeff said.
"Not from the lack of muscle," Kayley added. She had noticed all the scars and muscles while she helped change Jet. "How old is Jetsford?"
Jeff smiled at the question. "We're about the same age. Seventeen years seven months. I'm three days older than he is."
"But you're a head and a half taller than him."
"Are all the people from your world about the same size?" Jeff asked.
"Well, that's a yes and no question. Depends on the race of the person. I'm a full Lezizton, so we average a height of five and a half feet. A Ferton averages around eight feet tall. There usually is a minimal difference in size." Kayley explained.
"You been on this world for years now. Is it the same?" Jeff asked.
"Now that you mention it, no." Kayley shook her head. Everybody looked big to her in this world. Why she had not thought about it until now, she had no idea.
"Oh well, Jet is short even to our standards. Even Amanda is taller than he is. He got made fun of quite a bit in school. Not that it ever bothered him. After his parents died, something in him did, too. Of course, I believe something would die in anyone who saw their parents murdered." Jeff looked over at Kayley.
"Yeah, that is true," Kayley said sadly.
Hogan, that was off with Tulle playing around, cursed aloud as he slid off the ice. "Crap, I think we hit the end of the ice." He got up completely soaked.
"Time to get up already?" Jet sighed and looked at Hogan. "Good water isn't too deep yet. Tulle, you will rise on Alex. The rest of us will suffer and walk in the water. Kayley, save your magic. Maybe needed later." He looked at them, eyes slowly drooping closed.
Alex popped into existence large enough to carry Tulle on her back. "Alright, we need to get a move on. Tulle hop on my back."

"Shouldn't you carry Jet instead? I can walk with the others." Tulle said.
"You are younger than the rest. Also, you will start to freeze before the others. Jet will be fine. His magic is heating his body." Alex did not mention that It hurt Jet to use his magic. "So hop on. We need to get moving."
The water was not as cold as it used to be. In fact, while they made their way, some of them were sweating. "It's getting hotter, but the water is still cold?" Hogan said.
"Yeah, most likely, all the cooling coils went offline. This place is about to become a hot box." Jeff explained.
"Shouldn't the computer overheat and shut down? Surely it won't heat the entire place." Hogan said.
"The only thing holding this place together is that computer, I think. We are a hundred miles down. So with it off, we get no new air. The coils aren't cooling anymore, which wasn't just for the computer. The walls around this box will melt into molten lava without being cooled. I don't know how thick the walls are, but it's only a matter of time." Jeff explained, and everyone had a fearful expression on their faces.
"Hold on, if these walls turn to lava. Then wouldn't that mean the elevator walls will as well?" Kayley asked.
Jeff nodded as he sloshed through the water. "That isn't the only problem I see. What if there is no power to the elevator now?" He threw the question out for everyone to consider.
No one wanted to consider the question. Everyone was silent as they made their way at a bit faster pace. When they got to a wall, they wanted to cheer. But Alex spoke up. "Ok, now we to head to the right and pass two of the coils. They're not as close on this side. With the water, this deep should only take us an hour or two."
"Says the one who isn't tired." Hogan groaned. His body ached all over. The water easily went above waist-deep now.
Alex cocked her head. "I am quite tired. For some reason, I can feel aches all over." She didn't want to complain when she was sure it was worse for them. For now, she decided to put the problems away for later to figure out.
"Let's keep moving." Jeff moved forward, wincing from the pain in his legs. He wanted to take a break and even sleep. But they just didn't have the time.
They walked for another hour before Kayley spoke. "Jefferson, look up."
Jeff stopped to look up for a few seconds before looking back down. He shook his head tiredly before looking up again. "You have got to be kidding me." That is all he could say at the sight. The ceiling of the place had started to glow bright red. "We need to move even faster."
"Can you move any faster?" Kayley asked.
"I'm properly motivated now." Jeff took off at a faster pace.
"Alright, I'll go ahead and find the entrance to the room." Alex runs past them. "Hopefully, it's not too far."
About twenty minutes later, little fireballs of lava rained down on them. Kayley used her magic to flick them away if any came close. "I hope we're almost there." She wasn't sure how much longer she could even stand at this point.
Jet's eyes shot open and looked. "Alex found the room. Is it raining fireballs?"
"Hey, how about you help out?" Kayley complained.
"No, I'll need all my magic to run the elevator." Jet shot back.
"How much further?" Jeff asked in between breaths.
"At this speed, ten or so minutes." Jet answered.
The walls were now glowing red. "So, if this place is going to collapse soon? What are the odds the elevator tunnel hasn't collapsed?" Hogan asked.
"This elevator shouldn't collapse easily. It was built tougher than the other two. So if there were an emergency, people could escape. This place is supposed to have caretakers, but for some reason, they have all gone away." Jet explained.
"Hey, over here, guys," Tulle yelled to them. She was sitting on a rock next to a door. "Alex is trying to get the elevator door open."
"I thought you said ten minutes?" Hogan looked at Jet.
Jet smiled and said. "I rounded up." Once in the room, he looked at Alex. "Alex, stop wasting time breaking down the door. Jeff here can move the metal out of the way. Not only that, put it back, so we have a door on the way up."
Jeff taking the hint, moved the doors with his magic. The doors once opened, and everyone followed him in. "Now, what's the plan?"
"Open up the ceiling and bring us to the top of the elevator." Jet said.
Once Jeff moved the metal around, he floated to the elevator's roof. "So what are we looking for?"
Jet untied himself from Jeff's back to look around. "I see no cables. So how do you think this elevator moves up?"
Jeff looked at the elevator closely and decided. "Since it only took us about ten or so minutes to get down. I come up with one objection, magnets."
"Exactly, now to find the main power cable." Jet said.
"It won't be that easy. The power would need to go through the machine that activates and deactivates the different positions of the magnets." Jeff explained.
"I see." Jet jumped back down into the elevator. "Open up the doors again."
Jeff leaped down and complied. Then they walked over to a machine. "The main cable is over here." Jeff removed some metal from a wall to show a thick gold wire. "So what is the plan to power this and get back up?"
Jet gave him a small smile. "Simple," he lifted a hand, and electricity sparked across his fingers. "Someone will have to stay down here and power the machine."

Sara's (not really) Fabulous System Armageddon, Book I: The World Ended at Rush Hour
Planet Earth, Monday, October 7th, 2019. 18:30 * * On a fateful day, during rush hour in eastern North America, Heavens and Hell crumbled and fell from their higher dimension on Earth. It came from "above" but not the same above we regard in our tridimensional Euclidean reasoning. No, it came from "above" as in from a higher dimension. Bits and pieces of those places fell on Earth from all directions, this time in tridimensional Euclidean space. Satellites, the ISS, and space debris all were wiped clean from orbit. Even those that didn't crash with the falling debris were knocked off orbit by the shockwaves. On the ground, power distribution lines were disrupted and most power facilities were left abandoned by their dead staff. Most of these had emergency shutdown routines that engaged in a few days. Some others had a survivor among their staff that followed protocol and activated their SCRAM switches, stopping the power plant. Long-distance communication disappeared the internet along with it. The world was plunged into technological darkness. Nine hundred and ninety-nine out of every thousand human beings perished immediately in the pulse of magical energy from the torn spatial boundary. Spirits were rent asunder and vanished, their fate neither salvation nor damnation, only oblivion. The criteria used for this culling was latent magic potential. It didn't discriminate against education, gender, age, or ethnic group. But of the around seven million survivors, most would meet their doom moments later. Those on moving vehicles, like the ones driving on highways suddenly had to contend with high-speed uncontrolled cars and trucks driven by corpses. Trapped in their vehicles and helpless, they became part of the long snake of crushed metal. Very few survived. Those in the air or out in the sea were alone and probably unable to control their rides. Airplanes crashed, and ships kept their course or drifted away, depending on their autopilot. Several ended their own lives in utter despair after seeing their loved ones die in front of them. Another large group would die at the hands of other survivors. Violence and aggression became the norm. Only a few sparse pockets of not-so-sane survivors managed to band together and cooperate for the sake of mutual survival. The sole survivor in a five-over-one apartment building in Georgia, a girl became the keystone to humanity's survival. Sara's fabulous System Apocalypse had just started. She has only one remark. It was anything but fabulous. * * Updates every Wednesday and Sunday.
