《Saving Gracie | ✓》Chapter Thirty Two: You Think I Did It?

The car stops in front of my house and I let out a sigh when I notice that my father's car is parked in the driveway but Eve's car isn't. I unbuckle my seat belt and run my hands up and down my thighs, my thoughts beginning to circle my head.
"Are you okay?" I hear Luke ask and I turn to him and shrug.
"I don't know anymore." I mumble and Luke frowns at me, grabbing my hand and holding it in his.
"Do you want to come to mine?" Luke asks and I shake my head.
"I'll be fine." I say and Luke give me a stern look before raising my chin up with his spare hand. I look into his blue eyes and watch as a small frown appears on Luke's face.
"Smile, Grace." Luke demands and I roll my eyes.
"Not this again-"
"Smile." Luke repeats and I let out a sigh and do as I am told. Luke nods and places a gentle kiss on my lips, letting his lips linger on mine for a few seconds before pulling away.
"Text me if you need to get out of the house, okay?" Luke says and I nod, opening the car door and getting out. As I walk up to the door, I hear a loud whistle come from Luke, making my cheeks heat up. I quickly run up to the door and turn around to send Luke a wave. He smiles before driving away and I turn back around, grabbing my key out of my pocket and pushing it into the door.
I push the door open and the small smile that is on my face falls and my mouth opens in shock. The living room is completely destroyed and glass is everywhere, making my eyes widen at the scene. I also notice my father on the floor, his eyes shut and a beer bottle clutched in his hand.
I run over to him and fall to my knees, grabbing his arm and checking his pulse. My heart stops when I don't feel anything and I go to his neck, seeing if I can feel anything there. When I don't, I jump up and grab my phone out of my pocket, dialling nine-one-one.
As I tell the lady all the details, I glance at my father who still hasn't moved at all. The lady tells me that the ambulance will be here soon and I quickly hang up the phone so I can call Eve.
After dialling her number three times and still not getting an answer, I gulp, looking around the living room. A million questions flood in my mind and I can't help but concentrate on the one question that stands out.

Who did this?

Usually, I wouldn't care about my father and what he has gotten himself into. I would push him away and not give a single damn about him but now, it's like my feelings for him have changed.
I mean, he has done some stupid and hurtful things to me and my mom but he is my father. He is a part of me and I can't help but feel bad for not caring. It has only been two months since I lost my mom and if I lose my father, I don't know where I will end up.
I'm the type of person to forgive and forget but with the things that my father has done in the past, it is sort of hard. I try to keep my anger towards him, I really do, but it's like the hatred is slowly crumbling away as I realise that my father is the only parent I have left.
"Grace..." I hear someone say and I look up to see Eve frowning at me as I sit on the porch, looking at the two ambulance vans and the three cop cars in front of my house. I notice that Eve's hair is slightly messy and her hands are shaking a little.
"Hey." I say and Eve takes a seat next to me, looking at the scene in front of her.
"What happened?" Eve asks and I shrug, biting my nails.
"I don't know. I thought that you might know the answer to that." I say, looking over at Eve and her eyes widen in shock and disbelief. She points at herself and furrows her eyebrows.
"You think I did it?" Eve asks and I shrug again.
"Maybe." I say and Eve frowns at me, sending me a sad look. I look away from her and continue to bite my nails as I look at the police officers.
"Grace, I didn't do it. I was at the airport the whole time. I didn't even know your father was home when I left." Eve explains and I look up at her, my eyebrow raised.
"The airport?"
"I dropped Amy off. I told you that I didn't want her to start trouble with you but she did so she is dealing with the consequences." Eve simply shrugs and I nod slowly, hiding the happiness and relief that is inside of me.
After many attempts to try and push Amy back to Germany, she is finally gone and all that had to be done was tell Eve about it all. Plus, I don't have to deal with Amy ever again. Thank goodness!
"Anyway, I didn't do it, Grace. As much as I hate what he has caused you and your mom, I would never put your father in this situation or you for that matter. You might despise your father but inside, I know you care." Eve says and I gulp when I notice a police officer come and walk towards us.

The police officer crouches down in front of me and sends me a small smile. "Hello, Grace." The officer says and I nod slowly. He pulls out his notepad and clicks the pen in his hand.
"Are you ready to answer a few questions now?" The officer asks and I nod. He takes a seat on the ground and looks up at me, the smile slowly disappearing from his face.
"What time did you walk inside and saw your father on the ground?" The officer asks and I bite my lip in thought.
"Around four. I can't remember the exact time." I say and the officer nods, writing the information down on the notepad.
"Has your father ever acted out of control and ended up throwing things?"
"No."
"Is your father abusive?"
"No."
"Who do you think did this?" The officer asks and I look down at the ground in thought. I mean, I did think that Eve had something to do with it but her alibi sounds convincing and the suitcases that I saw before does make sense with what Eve said so maybe it wasn't her.
Who was it then?
"I-I... don't know." I mumble, looking away from the officer and looking back down at the ground. The officer pulls my chin up and sends me a small smile.
"Don't worry, Grace. We'll find out who did it." The officer smiles before looking over at Eve. He stands up straight, the smile disappearing from his face and replaced with seriousness.
"Do you mind answering a few questions?" The officer asks and Eve nods. As he begins to ask a few questions, I stand up and make my way inside the house, ignoring the protests coming from the detectives.
I make my way up the stairs and into my room to see that my room has also been turned upside down. I let out a sigh and begin to pick up the glass pieces off the ground, putting them into my bin. All of a sudden, my eyes land on a certain photo frame and I walk over and pick it up, my eyes beginning to water.
The frame is okay but the glass that shields the photo is smashed. The photo of my mom is crumbled a little and I take it out of the frame, walking over to my table to try and smooth it out. I look at my mom's smile and blink a few times, trying to not let the tears fall as I attempt to fix the photo of my mom.
Suddenly, a person taps my shoulder and I turn around, swinging my arm around and punching the person in the face. The person falls to the ground and I gasp as I look at the person on the ground.
"R-Randy!" I shriek, crouching down and holding his face in my hands. "I-I'm so sorry, Randy-" Randy cuts me off as he places his finger in front of my lips to shut me up and I just frown at him.
I'm so glad I didn't hit Randy extremely hard.
"I guess I deserved that." Randy says, sitting up and I continue to stare at him with a frown.
"What are you doing here?" I ask and Randy points his thumb backwards over his shoulder.
"Your house is on the news so I decided to make my way over here to see what was happening. Apparently your father is going to hospital." Randy says and I raise my eyebrow at him.
"It's on the news?" I ask and Randy nods.
"Yep. Didn't you see the news van outside?" Randy asks and I shake my head. I stand up and offer Randy a hand but he refuses. Before we can say anything, the officer that was talking to me before walks in and I quickly turn around and grab the photo of my mom, clutching it to my chest.
"Grace, we need you to come to protective custody until we get this place cleaned up. Are you okay with that?" The officer asks and I nod. He looks between the two of us quickly before walking out of the room.
"Do you know who did this?" Randy asks and I shake my head, walking out of my room. He follows me down the stairs until we are standing outside of the house.
"Well, I hope you find out soon." Randy says and I nod, watching as Randy begins to walk away from the house. I frown in confusion as I look at Randy's retreating figure.
Why do I have a feeling that he didn't just come here to see what was happening? What is Randy hiding?
"Come on, Grace. We have to go." Eve says, appearing by my side and I nod slowly as we begin to walk towards the cop cars. A sudden thought appears in my mind, making my eyes widen a little.
What if it was Randy who did this?

The Stormcrow Cycle
Once a powerful and lauded witch, Ba'an salu-Ba'an now lives alone in a cave in the desert, waiting to die. When she rescues an outlander from certain death she becomes embroiled in a deadly game of politics and empire, of heart and soul, but worst of all--of hope and love and a chance at a peaceful future. Can a disgraced witch find a reason to live her life again--and if so, what price must she pay? The Stormcrow Cycle is a trilogy comprising of The Exile, The Lion, and Abomination. Tags or genres for each book: The Exile: romance, slice-of-life The Lion: romance, slice-of-life, politics Abomination: tragedy, high/epic fantasy (aka "Everything is on fire!") Updates once a week whenever I have time. Cross-posted on Wattpad and Scribble Hub. The CBMokedi cover will return! Excerpt: She looked down at him again. Young. Healthy, from what she could see, except for the wound that was killing him. He was handsome in a way that suggested a life of wealth and plenty. She did not think he had ever starved. Someone important. Her shadow fell across him, and he frowned. Blearily, he opened his eyes. They were amber and bright, even as he lay dying in the dirt. She could feel his soul, blazing inside of him like a fire refusing to die even as his body began to fail. He met her gaze, eyes widening in what she guessed was surprise—or shock. But he never looked away, staring up at her as though transfixed. Ba’an made her decision. She raised her hand and covered his eyes. In another moment, a murder of crows cawed as they took wing. The man and woman were gone from the road, leaving only the dead staring up into the sky. Note: This is a high-fantasy set in a low-magic world. The first book is largely character-driven and we really only hit the real plot in Book II, so if you're not fond of long epic yarns you ought to skip this one. I also don't include trigger warnings, but mind the "traumatizing content" tag--all societies minus one practice slavery and the world is indeed, rather grim!
