《Call Of Death》Chapter 56 : Fear

Cameron was silently sitting on the chair beside Detective Parker who is busy munching on the apple that Officer Chad bought for him. Detective Lee gave out a sigh, he was still thinking and trying to figure out what Red's other purpose is. Scaring him and making him worry isn't the main plan, he knows that. But what? Stabbing Detective Parker and bringing him to his place, telling him about the mysterious name of Lee Jin Hong, something must be more than just scaring, teasing and threatening him. He just don't know what that is for now but he'll figure it out.
"You want some apple?" Kairo offered him a slice.
Cameron shook his head. "No, I'm fine."
"You sure? They're sweet. Officer Chad bought them." He smiled.
"Yeah, I'm fine." He refused.
After that, both of them went silent again. They've been colleagues for a long time but they never had a longer discussion. It doesn't feel awkward but it wasn't that comfortable either especially because there's only two of them inside a four-cornered room.
"Cam, can I ask you something?" Detective Parker broke the silence after some time.
Detective Lee nodded and turned to him. "What is it?"
Detective Parker sat up properly, very careful because his wound was still hurting. He place the plate on the table beside his bed and leaned on the pillow behind. He took a deep breath and looked the latter directly in the eyes. A hint of hesitance could be seen in his eyes.
"What is your childhood like?" That question made Cameron furrow his brows, no one has ever asked him that question before—not even Officer Chad.
"Why are you suddenly asking that question, Parker?" He confusedly asked.
"Well, nothing. I'm just curious."
"Why?"
"You never told us your childhood, not even Chief Simon knows it. I'm just curious, you seem really mysterious to me. We've been colleagues for a long time but I felt like I only know your name. Aside from that, everything about you is a stranger to me." Detective Parker explained.
Cameron went silent. This kind of topic, he wasn't and will never be ready to talk about it, especially with someone he's not that close with. He only told a little information to Devius, there's still a lot he is keeping inside him and he doesn't plan to even give anyone a peek on it. The only person who knew him inside and out was his adoptive father who was still missing to this days—Harold Lee.

"There's nothing interesting about my childhood." He simply answered, Kairo nodded.
"Mine isn't that interesting either. I play almost all day, everyday and my mother would pull me by the ear to drag me home. Was your childhood like that?" Detective Parker said like he was a kid throwing a tantrum.
Detective Lee shook his head. "My childhood wasn't like that. It wasn't interesting yet it wasn't normal either." He sighed.
"It wasn't normal? What do you mean?"
"Yes?"
"Why do you say so?" Detective Parker asked again.
"It's just...not normal."
"What is not normal about your childhood?"
Detective Lee took a deep breath and game a bitter smile. "It's something I don't want to talk about. I planned on never talking about it anymore." He honestly stated, making Kairo silent.
The room was filled with silent for a while again. When Cameron was about to start a topic again to get rid of the awkward silent, he felt his phone vibrating inside his pocket. He took it out and saw that a message was sent to him. The number became familiar to him upon receiving a lot of calls from the person who owns it. When he opened the message, his heart felt like it has been hit by a rock from a very high distance. It was Officer Chad's picture, sitting on his car with a caption saying— 'It's really fun watching your man drive your car. What would happen if I shot him with my gun right now?'
"Cameron, are you alright?" Detective Parker confusedly asked when he noticed that his colleague's face became pale with shock.
"I have to go somewhere." After he said those words, he quickly stormed out of the room.
He tried calling Devius but he wasn't picking his phone up. Maybe there is no signal in the area where he was out but as every little second passes, his heart was becoming crazier from both fear and anger.
The moment Officer Chad got out of the car, he was surprised because Detective Lee suddenly charged towards him and hugged him tightly. He was chasing his breath as if he has been running in a treadmill. Devius felt confused but he didn't say anything and just returned his hug silently.

Upon seeing that Devius isn't harmed in anyway, Cameron's heart was still pounding with fear but he felt at ease after feeling the warmth of his partner's hug. He was so worried earlier after he received a photo of him driving from Red. Detective Lee thought something bad was going to happen to him. The rain was pouring above them but Cameron doesn't care. He just wanted to hold on to Devius and never let go. All these time, he thought he knew long time ago what true fear really was but that moment, he knows he just felt what real fear was.
'Dang it! Why am I acting like this? Why do I fear so much if I lose him?' I He doesn't want to admit but he knew deep down his heart, he had already fallen for the guy.
"Cai, we're getting wet. Can we go back inside now? You can hug me all you want there." Devius said in a teasing tone after hugging for several moments.
Cameron broke the hug and stared at Officer Chad. "I'm sorry, I'm just glad that you're safe. Let's go back inside." He then held the guy's hand and pulled him back to the hospital.
"You're glad that I'm safe? Why? Do you think something will happen to me?" Devius asked with a smile.
"It's nothing."
"Cai, is there something you're not telling me?" Officer Chad asked in curiosity while they were walking on the hallway.
"It's really nothing."
"Cai..."
Detective Lee sighed and turned to his partner. "Fine, I'll tell you about it once we return to the apartment. Let's just say goodbye to Parker before going to the headquarters." He said in a long litany and started walking again without letting the other's hand go.
Officer Chad didn't say anything more after that. They went back to Detective Parker's room. Cameron only let go of his partner's hand when they were at the door. When the two guys went in, Kairo even looked surprised.
"Oh? You're back. What happened to you earlier?" He asked Detective Lee.
Cameron just shook his head. "I just had to do something earlier. I apologise if I suddenly left without saying anything to you."
"You looked so worried earlier. You literally turned pale after looking at your phone, did you receive a porn video?" Detective Parker jokingly said.
"Tss! Just take a lot of rest and get well soon. We need you for the investigation. Once you're discharge, I'll ask Chief Simon to hold a meeting, I have to say something." Cameron slightly smiled.
"I'm a tough guy, I'll be well soon. Bad grass don't die easily." Detective Parker winked and smiled.
"Then, we'll get going now, Detective Parker." Devius politely uttered.
"Hmm. Thank you for always visiting me." Kairo smiled.
"How did you know that we're always visiting you?" Devius asked in confusion.
"The nurses told me." Kairo simply responded.
"Oh."
"Anyway, take care on your way back. Call me if you found out anything." Kairo saluted, so did they.
They just gave him their short goodbye before getting out of the room and heading to their car. The rain has finally calmed down but there are still a little drizzle. On their way to the headquarters, Detective Lee remained quiet and Devius was just looking outside the window. Both men has something in their minds.
Cameron was worried and thinking about two different things. While Devius was thinking and curious about the reason for his usually cold partner to do such action. Even his worried vibe wasn't common to Devius at all. What surprised him the most is when he hugged him outside the hospital without even worrying that someone might see them. When he heard Detective Parker talking about him turning pale after looking at something in his phone, he already knows that it is connected to his sudden actions earlier. The only question that Officer Chad has in mind is : What did he see on that phone that made him so scared? And how is it related to me?
