《MY TYPE | KTH ✓》12

She wasn't normally one to jump to conclusions. Especially when it came to the people she cared most about.
But it had been three days and Taehyung hardly called her during that time, nor did he bother to leave a text.
It wasn't anything major, but why did she find herself wallowing in ice cream, listening to Adele and ignoring the few calls he did send through?
Finally when the ringing got too much, she answered.
"Yeah?"
"Bree?" it was Jimin's voice.
"Jimin? What happened? Where's Tae?"
"You two need to get your shit together, why do I need to be the mediator?"
"We-"
"Look Bree, I like you, I really do. But can you stop being this selfish just for a second and maybe think about Tae?"
"Uhm, I don't think there's anything selfish about me being mad at him."
"What?" his voice was filled with shock, embarrassment too.
"That girl he was with all day that day, when I wasn't at uni, in his room. Locked."
"You mean... Bree that was a professor."
"Well of course," she sighed, "Cheating on me with someone better suited for him."
"No, you don't understand, that was a professor from Caltech, he's been offered tenure as a junior lecturer while he works on his PhD."
"Huh?"
"He's gonna move to California-"
Immediately hanging up, she rushed to her door, swiping the keys off the table and running to her car.
Arriving at their place at lightning speed, she was up the elevator and at their door in no time.
"Tae?"
Walking in, she saw him sitting on the couch, surprised to see her there.
"Bree?"
"Okay I'm gonna le-" Jimin started, and when he realised neither of them were listening, she shook his head, grabbing a jacket and leaving the apartment.

"Taehyung, what's this about moving to California?"
"Man, I wanted to be the one to tell you," his smile was bright, and it stung Bree. "I got offered a place in Caltech," a bullet to her heart, "They want me there for three years while I work on my PhD," another bullet, "Starting in two weeks." The last bullet.
"Tae, that's a-amazing," the tears were pooling in her eyes, as she tried to hide them.
She had to be happy for him.
"Yeah I know! It'll be such a good achievement for my career."
"Yeah..." this time she let her voice drag off, and he noticed, taking her hands in his.
"I want you to come with me."
She looked up at him. "Tae I-"
"It would be so good for you too! Think about the amazing experience you could have, learning in a new country!"
"Please, Tae, I don't thi-"
A tear slipped from his eye, cutting her off, "Tae."
Reaching up to wipe it away, he continued, "I don't want to leave you, Bree, I really love you too much for that."
"Taehyung, I don't know if I could move all the way to another country, in the middle of my degree, there's so much to think about..."
He looked down.
"I love you too, Tae, but I don't want to stop you from taking this amazing opportunity."
"Bree-"
"We could try long distance," she offered.
"C'mon, we both know that's a load of bullshit."
"Then... what?"
"I guess, we should end it."
"Taehyun-"
"I don't want to either, but what else is there?"
"I-"
"Bree, I really want to use this chance," his eyes were desperate, waiting for her to tell him she'd come.

But she couldn't.
She couldn't just drop everything she had worked for, for one boy.
"Yeah, you should."
"Huh?"
"You should, it is a really good opportunity, you could do a lot."
"Does that me-"
"No," she shook her head sadly, "Maybe you're right, maybe we should end it."

The next day, Bree was really basking in her own tears, luckily Minah was able to convince her to go to Taehyung's last chemistry lecture. To her, it was a perfect way of saying her last goodbye. She knew it would break Bree too much to talk to him alone. So this was her way of getting the best closure, and saying goodbye, for good.
Half an hour went fast, Bree not taking in anything that Taehyung was saying. She was in the last row, sunk in her seat and everytime he would speak she went into an endless cycle of regretting being there. But she couldn't stand and escape now.
It was just too late.
He finally wrapped up the lecture, telling the class of the news. That he was leaving.
The class was booing, fake crying all around. They really did like him. And for once, she could relate to everyone in that room.
"Just wanna impart some life advice," he started and they all booed again. "Chem based of course."
"Don't leave, sir," a female student said and Bree could have sworn his smile faltered slightly and he glanced over in her direction ever so quickly.
"Everything has a type it works best with," he continued, "Oxygen and two hydrogen atoms, carbons, oxygens and hydrogens, sodium and chloride."
He walked around his desk to the front of it, leaning back, "And you have to remember that somewhere out there is the type for you. But also don't forget that just because you're adenine, doesn't mean your type is thiamine," she looked up, to see him looking right at her. "Because you could be built for RNA."
He sighed, "Don't ask thiamine to become uracil for you. Just like you shouldn't make yourself spend your life being part of DNA when you're meant for something else. Find your type."
The class erupted in applause, and Bree decided she had had enough, packed up her stuff and walked to the nearest bathroom, dropping her bag to the floor, tears falling freely now.
--
That night Bree rewatched the last movie she watched with him, crying more and more every time she remembered the commentary he would have added after each scene.
She sure was going to miss him.
How was she going to take the aching in her heart now?
Looking at the time, she remembered Jimin telling her that his flight was at ten in the evening.
"He must have left by now."
Twisting the necklace he had given her around in her hand, diamond dust really was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. Second to Taehyung's sparkling eyes of course.
