Yashiro Nene said while walking up to her friends, stopping a bit away from them.
Hanako and Kou turned their attention to Yashiro while you continued to look out the window. Baseball bat in hand, the silvery tape around it shining in the sun, you were completely mesmerized by the view the bathroom window provided over the green school yard.
"To be frank…" Yashiro began speaking, and you took a last glance out the window before looking at your troubled friend. Yashiro brought out a paper that was labeled:
Yashiro Nene,
Semester final study guide.
"Finals are right around the corner..!!" She looked at her friends with empty eyes, small tears clung to the bottom of her big eyes - she was over all distressed.
"Yeah, the finals…" you spoke with a bored tone while petting a mokke. It gave a small nudge to your hand, showing its delight towards your action.
"Finals!! I totally forgot about them!!" Kou whined as he held his head with frustration; how could he forget such an important thing?!
Yashiro held the study guide in her hand while sniffing out quiet sobs, "Who would've thought that time would fly by that fast while we were in that world…"
Hanako floated in the background, his hands in front of him, falling by their wrists, he sweatdropped:
"Who cares about doing finals and all that junk…?"
"I do!!" Yashiro exclaimed and looked back at Hanako.
She went on to explain that if you do poorly in school you have to go through all sorts of tutoring. And, in her case, if she were to get low scores on all of her subjects, then she'd have to go through tutoring the whole summer.
"–I won't be able to come in and clean the toilets!"
Hanako looked at Yashiro, baffled with shock. It was like electricity rushed through his whole body as he whipped his head towards you - who were still petting the mokke.
If you got low scores in all the subjects, then you wouldn't be able to visit him! And even worse, what if you completely forgot about him during your endless tutoring?!
"Let's study hard…" Hanko put a hand on Yashiros shoulder, a serious expression on his face.
"......yeah." Yashiro smiled slightly though her eyes were as dead as her soul.
"I'll help you too, senpai!!" Koi exclaimed as he started to stretch his left arm - it looked like he was winding it up.

"Boy, are you safe for the finals?" Hanako asked as he floated beside Kou, resting his index finger on his chin.
"I'm not!"
"What a pain…" you sighed as you leaned off the window seal, walking towards your friends, landing beside Hanako.
He turned to look at you, his index still on his chin, "Y/N, are you safe for the exams?"
Yashiros eyes sparkled as Hanako asked that question, "Of course they are! Y/N is the top student in our class - no, in our whole school!"
Kou turned his head away from Yashiro, his eyes shone with admiration, "That's amazing, Y/N!"
You laughed nervously, sheepishly scratching the nape of your neck as you swung Betty over your shoulder, "It's nothing, really…"
Yashiro then fell down to her knees in front of you, hands in a begging motion, "Please show me your ways of studying, master!'
"Eh?"
"Yeah! Please show us how you study, N/N!"
"Where did that nickname come from?"
"I'm quite interested myself, care to show us how you manage to get such high scores?"
"Well…" you began, a sweat drop falling down your cheek. Yashiro, Kou and Hanako leaned in, eager to know how you do it.
"I don't study."
"WHAT?!"
"
What's going on over here…?" Yashiro asked after you and her entered the 1a classroom. People were swarmed around a desk, mummers and mumbled could be heard among the people.
"Aoi… What's going on here?" Yashiro looked at Akane Aoi, one of her closest friends, for an answer to the mass of people before them.
"Nene-chan, Y/N-san! Take a look over there..!" Aoi pointed towards the desk that everyone was standing around.
Books were around the redhead Aoi Akane as he scribbled down various notes in his notebooks, a headband was around his head with the word 'VICTORY' written on it.
"Will not allow it…" he had a very serious face, eyes dead set on the notes he was writing down. He kept on mumbling before he screamed, tears falling down his face in a comical way, "I WON'T LET IT HAPPEN!!"
"What's up with him..?" Yashiro dead panned and mumbled, "He keeps murmuring 'marriage'?"
"Akane-kun…" Aoi held Yashiro's hand, a concerned expression on her face. Yamabuki Lemon came into the view and started to talk to the two girls.

You looked at Akane with a questioning face, tuning out your friends' voices. You walked towards the workaholic, who was still writing at the speed of light, and patted his shoulder. He looked up only to see you staring down at the notes before him.
"You seem pretty stressed…" you said, breaking the silence and took a paper from his desk, "you strive to become the number one, right?" You looked at him.
"I won't allow it to happen…" Akane looked forward, "I WONT ALLOW IT!!"
You blinked as you looked at him, a sweatdrop running down your face. You put down the paper with a sigh and put a hand on his shoulder, "why don't you go and spend time with Aoi? I'm sure she'd be worried about you."
"YEAH!" He stood up, but quickly sat down again, "no, I need to keep studying!" He turned away, his smile dropping down into a frown.
"What happened, Aka-kun? Did Teru say something to you?" You asked him, bringing back unwanted memories to the redhead.
He slumped down in his seat, massaging his nose bridge.
"...I guess you could say that…"
You hummed and brought a chair to his side, sitting down on it. Akane looked to the side and you gave him a smile.
"I'll help you! Even though I don't really know how to study..."
Akane blinked at you with empty eyes, before giving you a small smile in return. Akane then thought of your score last year, but he couldn't really remember what it was, so he decided to ask.
"Hey, L/N–"
"Call me Y/N! We're friends, aren't we?"
"Okay, Y/N…-san," he still wanted to be polite, "What place did you get on last year's finals?"
"Third place, though I barely studied…"
"THIRD PLACE OUT OF 224 STUDENTS?! AND YOU BARELY STUDIED?!"
"Why is everyone so shocked at that? I may not look like it, but I do care about my grades."
"I AIN'T GONNA LOSE!!" Koi wrote down the answers on a paper, sitting on a chair, opposite to his siblings and Y/N.
"TERU-NII, Y/N, PLEASE CHECK THIS OUT FOR ME!" He handed over the paper to his seniors, Teru taking it from Kou's hand.
He smiled as Tiara sat in his lap. You stood up and walked behind Teru, resting your hands on his shoulders as you leaned in to have a good look at the answers.
Teru froze and your chest came in contact with his back, arms slung around his neck. A small blush appeared on his face as you began to point out the mistakes the younger Minamoto had made, but Teru didn't hear a thing. All he could feel was your heartbeat against him, it was calming. An even bigger blush spread as you leaned in more so you could show Kou what he had done wrong when writing down the answers.
Tiara looked at her older brother and then at you. She paused for a moment and bluntly blurted out:
"Teru-nii, are you and Y/N partners?"
You blinked as you stopped what you were doing, looking at Tiara.
Kou's eyes widened. Partners? Were you and Teru dating? Kou held the smile on his face, but he couldn't help but feel a stinging pain in his chest.
"No?" You answered, confused.
"Aww…" Tiara frowned, "but I wanted you to be my sibling…"
You leaned back from Teru, and looked at Tiara with a heart warming smile. Kou and Teru looked at you, completely lovestruck.
"Don't worry! I can still be your older sibling!" You smiled down at Tiara. Her eyes sparkled and she jumped of Teru's lap and in to your arms.
She gave you a big hug, smiling from ear to ear.
"...Hey, Tsuchigomori," Hanako said, laying over the teachers desk, "Wanna tell me the answers to Y/N's exams?"
"Yeah, can't." He dead planned at the ghost before him. Yako was laying on Tsuchigomori's desk as Hanako kept on annoying him.
Akane looked down at his ranking on the small paper before him. He had just talked to the school prince, Minamoto Teru, and got to know that students who got recognized personally by the teachers could get a higher test score, that's why even though Akane got full marks on all his subjects, he still wasn't able to beat Teru.
"You've gotta be kidding me…" he looked at his rank, "I am third place of the first years!?"
Aoi Akane: 500 points, 3rd place, first years.
Akane Aoi: 510 points, 2nd place, first years.
L/N Y/N: 525 points, 2nd place, first years.

Together, Orson and Enoa battle a magic-obsessed militia, clash with a host of rivals, and face constant adventure on their journey to find the Dreamside Road. *Updates Monday and Friday The Dreamside Road is now on TopWebFiction! Vote so people know this exists. _____________________________________ NOTE: The Progression tag applies specifically to Enoa. Also, fair warning, that element doesn't enter the story until she begins her studies. Content: Main characters range in age from teenagers to people in their thirties and older, but it will not contain gratuitous violence or explicit sexual content. It also won’t shy away from implication, anything to make this story and its world feel more real. Characters will freely allude to potentially triggering topics, including living with a disability, facing terminal illness, coping with trauma, surviving societal destabilization, and the consequences of bigotry. At its most intense, the Dreamside Road is a hard PG-13. Worldbuilding: This is not a story with a lot of early exposition scenes, conveniently explaining ‘magic systems’ and political dynamics. Readers will learn, progressively, as the characters do. This story/world has a ‘magic system’, or rather, a set of systems, but the effort to quantify and understand the truth of the setting plays a role in the backstory, as well as in some character motivations. In that same vein, not every character has a firm grasp on the nature of their world, and not every piece of dialog from every character should be taken as entirely truthful Worldbuilding. Also, this isn't the softest Sci-fi. There are at least some basic explanations given for various elements, but Royal Road does not give me a spectrum to choose from. Given the choice between hard and soft, let's just say The Dreamside Road won't be cited in any college Physics papers. Setting and Theme: The Dreamside Road walks the line between fantasy and science fiction and deals with finding one’s place in a changing world. Many of the characters in this story are United States natives and the story begins in the United States, my homeland. However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.
