Here are the key elements that the judges will look at while judging story and short story entries:
You will be prompted to write a 500 word (max) plot summary of your story in the submission form. This is a critical element of your submission as it helps the judges decide if they want to know more about your story.
- It should be clear, concise, and follow a consistent narrative
- It should include all the main points of your plot from beginning to end (yes, along with spoilers!)
You can find tips on how to write an effective summary here: Loglines and Summary
- The concept of your story should be compelling, fresh, and unique
- It should be able to quickly engage the readers and make them turn the page
- The ending of your story should bring it to a remarkable yet logical conclusion.
- Your authorial voice and the voice of your characters should be compelling and strong
- The point of view you use should be clear and maintained consistent throughout the story
- Use of a vivid and emotional language is always a plus
- The pace of your story should be well-balanced
- Writing should progress through a beginning, middle, and end via effective and clear transitions
- Characters should be multi-dimensional, well-developed and unique
- If your characters are able to etch their place in the judges' minds, that's a big plus
- Your writing should be creative
- The ideas and style should be refreshing and imaginative
- Dialogue should be well-mixed with narration and should support the plot development
- Let's just say, the less mistakes the better
The poetry submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
Your usage of vocabulary should be precise, vivid, and paint a lasting picture in a reader's mind
You should effectively use the poetic techniques to reinforce the theme of your poems
Your voice and perspective should be unique and easily evident
While grammar isn't a main stay in poetry, your spellings should be correct and error-free

Sufficiently Advanced
A Novella about magic vs aliens vs science. It's a raucous, campy sci-fi read involving humans gaining magic, a possibly pizza-hating alien empire, the decapitation of the US Federal Government, eldritch abominations, lesbian space witches and some medium-hard science.I wouldn't say it's not serious, but I wouldn't say it's serious. Eh, it's not serious. Wait... it's getting serious.
