《Contrasting Similarities》30. Voice

Extra update, because I just got done with the last exam.
---
Lucian helped himself to the sandwiches, signalling the end of his lecture. So I started nibbling too, while watching Jayden closely.
Everyone was eating while Jayden took his time picking up the good-looking sandwich.
Just as he took the first bite, I looked at Lucian.
A few moments later.
"WHAT THE FUCK!?"
Lucian stopped his movements, which was moving the sandwich towards his mouth. His open mouth closed quickly so his lips pressed into a thin line.
"Jayden!" Asher snapped, glaring at Jayden. Rose leaned back so she wasn't in the way.
Lucian was yelling through his eyes. Honestly, if I was getting that look, I'd be dead by now.
"Why is there lettuce in my sandwich?" He gritted, after he was done chewing and swallowing the first bite with a scrunched up face.
"Lettuce?" Asher furrowed his eyebrows, before looking at me for an answer.
As soon as we locked eyes, I looked down and pretended I wasn't aware of what was happening.
"Did you mess with the sandwiches, Bunny?" Lucian asked. I lifted my gaze and put on the most innocent look I could muster.
"This little rat surely did." Jayden pointed at me, clenching his jaw.
"Watch your mouth, Jayden," Lucian said, sharply, turning his head to him. Jayden scowled and looked down.
"I asked a question, Bunny," Lucian said, turning his attention back to me.
I looked at his nose and took a deep breath.
"I didn't mess with them. I just made them healthier. Since there was only cheese in them, I thought a little green would look good on them."
I fainted right after that. Lucian smirked!
It was still a small twitch which he stopped immediately but I noticed it. The tensed corners of his eyes relaxed a little and his expressions softened.
Woah! He just became slightly less scary.
"Well?" Jayden asked like a petulant child. "Aren't you gonna tell her off?"
Lucian looked back at him, dropped all the expressions and straightened up.
"No. She didn't put anything unhealthy. Normally, I would've told you to make some for yourself or have some of these." Lucian pointed at the food on the table. "But since you have no control over your mouth, I expect you to finish everything on your plate."
Did he really-
Oh God. He's earning points.
Jayden tried to argue but was silenced by the simple gesture of raising an eyebrow. Lucian hummed in approval when Jayden went silent and began nibbling on the sandwich.
I smirked and looked down at my food.
Lucian just ate two of the three sandwiches Asher made. I had just finished my first one when he announced.
"I have some work. I'll be back in thirty," he said, wiping his hands with a tissue then standing up.
I made the mistake of making eye contact with Jayden who was glaring at me with a smirk. Psycho expressions.
Lucian buttoned his suit coat, while telling something to Asher.
I grabbed the arms of my chair, ready to run. Jayden did the same, ready to push his chair back too and run.
I heard Lucian walk away. I didn't look away from Jayden's eyes, my heart beating fast due to the slight fear I felt.
Just as we heard the door to the kitchen close, we waited for Lucian's footsteps to become inaudible.
Pushing the chair back with a great force and standing up simultaneously, I ran at full speed towards the door, hearing Jayden's heavier footsteps rushing behind me.

"Kids! Finish your lunch first!" Asher yelled from the kitchen.
I just ran at full speed, my footsteps against the floor echoing around the mansion.
"I just helped you eat healthy!" I exclaimed, not looking back.
"You messed with my sandwiches!" He corrected, gritting his teeth.
"Sandwich!" I corrected him. "The other three don't have lettuce."
"Oh? Is that true? Or are you lying to get out of this, Bunny?" He mocked.
"It's the truth. I didn't want you to be hungry, knowing you won't eat the lettuce filled ones," I blurted out.
"I still had to eat that one."
I decided to take the stairs.
"Argh! Where did Lucian go?" I exclaimed, running faster for my life, after reaching the top of the stairs.
Just as I turned the first corner, I saw the navy blue suit and ran over to him.
Hearing my footsteps Lucian turned around sharply. I came to an abrupt halt, sliding on the floor, stopping just when his shoes touched mine.
Before he could ask anything or scold me for running, I stepped behind him. Jayden's footsteps slowed as his quickened breathing became audible.
Lucian moved a little and I clutched the sides of his coat, instinctively.
That took him by surprise because he put his hands over mine, when I did that.
"What is happening?" He asked, removing his big hands from my small ones.
Jayden stammered for an answer. I peeked from beside Lucian and smirked, telling him I was gonna snitch. His eyes widened as he shook his head sharply.
My smirk widened as I looked up, about to tell everything. My throat closed as soon as I looked up.
Lucian was looking down at me, with a confused frown that looked just as scary as his angry frown.
'He doesn't like you. You acting like this will just enrage him.'
All the expressions on my face dropped as I slowly released my hold on his coat.
Increasing the distance between me and him, I cleared my throat.
"Sorry," I said, before moving to walk away from there. My shoulders slumped as I stepped out from behind him.
For some reason, I felt a weird void inside. An isolated feeling.
But something inside me was telling me that it was good. Being isolated and away from everyone was good.
Just as I took one step, Lucian turned towards me completely. Jayden was now frowning while looking at me.
"Can you ask someone to bring her lunch to my office, please Jayden?" He asked, politely.
"No. I'm good. I will eat in the kitchen," I stammered, taking a step towards where we came from.
"I didn't ask, did I?" He asked. I stopped abruptly.
"No," I mumbled, looking down.
"Look at me when I'm talking to you," he said. That caused an automatic reaction. I stood a little straighter and lifted my eyes to look at his nose.
His nose looks nosy.
Jayden walked back towards where we came from, leaving me alone in the presence of this scary dude, also known as my eldest brother.
"Follow me to my office," he said, before he started striding towards the direction he was going towards, before I did my pathetic act.
I rolled my eyes and shuffled behind him, my heart racing like Jayden drives the car. A mad bull high on energy drink.
I walked in behind him. Shutting the door softly, I stood there for a moment taking deep breaths to calm myself down. Lucian took that time to stride towards his chair and sit down.

"Sit," he said. I shuffled to the chairs and took a seat.
"You can take as long as you need, but you're going to tell me what that voice says all the time for you to go back to where you started," he stated, watching me closely. I just fiddled with my hands and shifted my gaze downwards.
"It said nothing," I mumbled.
"Are you lying?" He said, in a low tone that almost made me flinch.
"No," I squeaked out, even lower than what my voice was before.
"Amira Levi!" He snapped, making me actually jump this time. "Look up and tell me the truth."
Slowly raising my eyes, I gulped on seeing the look on his face.
"Did you hear something or not?" He asked, daring me to lie again.
"I did," I whispered, trying hard not to look away.
"Hm. What did it say?" He asked, clasping his hands together.
I stayed silent.
It said I'm pathetic for being so happy. Or maybe they hate me and I shouldn't be around them.
"Do you want to talk to Nicholas?" He asked, already pulling his phone out.
For some reason, I nodded.
A knock on the door, made me turn.
Asher entered with two sandwiches and water. He gave Lucian a look, to which Lucian just shook his head.
"Here Honey. Eat first then you can talk," he said, glaring at Lucian at the end.
I picked up the sandwich and nibbled on it, eating slowly while Asher sat beside me, his arm on the back of my chair.
"What happened?" The question was directed at Lucian.
"Her expressions took an opposite turn again," Lucian said. "I really want to know what it says for that drastic change to happen."
Asher sighed, while I looked down focussing on the food. I was silently wishing Asher would get me out of here.
About ten minutes later, I was done eating and had cleaned my hands with a tissue.
"Talk." That's all Lucian said.
"What he means is," Asher began, giving Lucian a pointed look. "You have to tell us, Bunny. We're here to help you."
"What did Nicholas tell you?" Lucian asked.
"Not to give in to the voice," I muttered.
"And why's that?" He asked, tilting his head to the side.
"Because it just spews bull-"
Fuck. I just snitched on Stinky-butt.
"Poop." I finished, looking at him for a reaction. All I saw was a frown.
"Then why are you still believing it?" He asked, making me shrug in response.
"I don't know," I mumbled, looking away.
Lucian just picked up his phone and called someone. He passed the phone to me.
Putting it to my ear, I waited, holding my breath. Two rings later, he picked up.
"Good afternoon, Brother," said Nico's heavy voice.
"Hey, Nico," I said, quietly.
"Oh. Hey, Bunny. How's it going?" He asked, his tone immediately changing to somewhat more frank.
"It's good," I said, gulping when Lucian raised an eyebrow at me.
"Is something wrong?" Nico asked, from the other side, sensing something wrong.
When I stayed silent, he continued.
"Did you have lunch?" He asked.
"Yes. Asher and I made sandwiches," I said, quickly. I wanted to make sure he knew I did as he asked.
"That's great. I'm so proud of you," He said, sounding quite happy. Warmth settled in my stomach. I didn't want to disappoint him. Hence, I didn't want to tell him that I listened to the voice despite him telling me not to.
"Did something happen at Lunch?" He asked.
"Yes."
"A hallucination or the voice?" He asked. "Or was it another memory?"
"Voice," I mumbled. Nico sighed.
"Do you want to tell me what it said?" Nico asked, almost encouragingly.
"Can I say no?" I asked.
"Yes you can. But it will be good for you if you tell me," he said. "Maybe we can talk about it in private?"
I thought for a moment, before muttering a small yes.
"Okay. Find a secluded place and then you can tell me about it," he said.
Finally, I lifted my gaze to look at my two brothers looking at me expectantly.
"Can I step out and talk to him alone?" I asked, looking at Lucian. He frowned and stood up.
"You can talk to him here. We'll go," he said, as Asher stood up and they stepped out, shutting the door behind them softly.
I sighed, not knowing how to tell him.
"What's the word it says the most?" Nico asked when I stayed silent for too long.
"Pathetic," I muttered, without thinking.
Why am I being so transparent?
"And it's related to your happiness?" He asked.
"Yes," I said, quietly.
"So it tells you you're pathetic for being happy?" He asked for confirmation, although he sounded sure he had come to the right conclusion.
"Yes," I said. My vision blurred a little as tears started gathering in my eyes. "I can't ignore it."
My voice shook at the end.
"You can, Honey. You can ignore it. First of all, you're not what it tells you. You know it says negative things and you need to remember that."
"It's not that easy," I mumbled, sniffling a little.
"I know," he said, softly. "It will go away once you stop listening to it and stop getting affected by it. How did Lucian notice?"
"We were laughing then I heard this voice and my expressions changed quickly. The same thing happened a second time, when I was messing with Jayden."
"And did it tell you to stay away from your family both times?" He asked.
"Yes."
"Okay Bunny. You can do two things. You can either start writing what this voice says and what you felt afterwards, in a journal. Then you will show it to me or one of your siblings," he began, already making me anxious.
"Or you can simply call me or tell one of your siblings about what it said and how it felt. Either way, you will have to communicate. It's not going to work if you bottle it inside," he said.
"But I don't want to tell what exactly it said," I said. Honestly, I myself was unsure as to why I couldn't tell it.
"You're making it stronger. You have enough people around you who can provide you with enough support to put that bitch back in its place," he said, causing me to let out a small giggle.
"Shit. Oh sorry. Don't tell Lucian," He said, sheepishly.
"I won't," I said, chuckling some more.
"Fight back, Bunny. You're a queen and you do NOT take shit from anyone, much less a voice which has no living shape or form," he said, making me laugh again.
He can't stop cursing when he's out of his professional therapist role. He's like that cool uncle that always gets on the Dad's nerves.
He chuckled a little, before asking,
"So what do you want to do?" He asked, referring to the two options he gave me before.
"Talk," I said, quietly. I feel like it will feel better if I talk it out. Funny because I don't want to tell anyone about it.
"Okay. Who do you want to tell?" He asked.
"You," I muttered.
I don't know what power he has but I just want to tell him about it.

Cutting to Life: an NPC LitRPG (Battle Royale)
Nikola is an NPC in The World of Wills, a video game where players can feel sensations as if they were truly there. She leads a life of bloodshed and murder - that is, until one day she wakes up sapient. Just as she begins thinking real, non-scripted thoughts and making connections, she and the players in the game are told that if they die in the game, they die in real life - and it's time to get killing. But what of Nikola, the emerging AI consciousness? How does she win in a game that can only end in her being wiped from existence at the end of it all? - Updates Mondays and Fridays. Cutting to Life is a slow-burn LitRPG with a villainous (later anti-hero, or maybe still villainous, haha) female lead. It's told from the perspective of Nikola, an NPC within the World of Wills who's become sapient and is now mysteriously able to play the game as a PC. It's quite light for a LitRPG, but the system and stats become more of a focus later when Nikola herself can access them. The story gradually builds into a Battle Royale where the players' lives are on the line (if you die in the game, you die in real life), and only one party of savvy adventurers can win. They'll have to spend their time and stats wisely as dungeons promising rare gear float down from the sky - but is a legendary sword worth killing someone for, knowing they'll stay dead forever? - This story is told in third person, past tense.- This is a slow-burn LitRPG that spends a lot of time establishing its setting and characters, because I believe this will make for a better payoff in the end. As such, the Battle Royale doesn't start until chapter 30 or so.- Chapters are anywhere between 800 words and 3000 words long.- Book cover by Vixeona.Cutting to Life is also being posted on SPB and Scribble Hub.Thank you sincerely for reading.
