"Get out the bathroom, I need to use it too" I heard Luke shout through the door.
"I'm getting there"
"You've got five minutes" I rolled my eyes. As if I'd be done in five minutes. I continued straightening my long dark brown hair. Once I was done with that I started to apply my mascara. I just finished one eye and moved onto the next as Luke opened the door and pushed past me. The motel had decided bathroom locks weren't a necessary requirement. I begged to differ.
"Dude, get out. Look what you did" I pointed at the mascara that had ended up along my cheek.
"It's a little eye shit" He said before turning around to face me. "You're not dressed yet"
"I know"
"Nice size" He said as he eyed my body.
"Stop staring at my boobs"
"But they're right there and not exactly small"
"It's called don't barge into the bathroom when a girl is getting ready. You're lucky I had a bra on" I said as i pulled my plain black tank top over my torso.
"I'd have preferred to see you without a bra"
"You're a dickhead"
"I'm a guy, we're all the same"
"Fuck off" I looked back into the mirror, starting to remove the streak of mascara on my cheek before reapplying it to my half finished eye. Out of the corner of my eye I saw him start to undress himself. "Thank god I'm done" I said before grabbing my stuff and leaving.
"Luke being a dick?" Michael asked. We were both ready.
"As always"
"He's not that bad"
"He really is"
"You just need to hang out with him a bit, get to know him" I just nodded, not wanting to argue, as I continued packing my stuff.
"Where are we sleeping tonight?" Michael asked.

"Probably in the cars like we did the first night" Calum said.
"Seriously?" I asked.
"Yeah, sorry" We were currently in a cafe/restaurant having a dinner before we moved on to somewhere to sleep for the night.
"I feel like we're homeless" Luke said.
"We kind of are" Ashton agreed.
"So who's riding with who?"
"Same as on the way here, just change driver?" Luke and I both rolled our eyes knowing we had to be in the same car again.
"I'm going with the other car. You two can ride by yourselves" Michael said.
"No. I am not being in a car alone with her" Luke argued.
"You guys'll get more room to sleep"
"Fine" Luke said and threw me the car keys across the table since it was my turn to drive.
"So about last night"
"We don't need to talk about it" I told him. We were about halfway to the stop for the night.
"We really do"
"We don't"
"Maddie"
"Luke, drop it"
"No"
"Why not?"
"Because we both know it wasn't just a harmless kiss"
"I was making a point"
"A fucking big point"
"Luke, we don't need to discuss this. You're the one that brought it up in the first place"
"You're the one that initiated the kiss"
"You kissed back and pulled me onto your lap and held me when we were sleeping"
"I told you I do that when I'm sleeping"
"Neither of us were asleep yet"
"What are we? Five?" He exclaimed, referring to the way we were arguing. I rolled my eyes but smirked slightly, knowing I was right and he didn't want to admit it.
"Looks like we're stopping here" I said, ignoring him as we pulled off the main road and into a large lay-by. We parked up just as Mia came over to us. I rolled the window down.

"Good to see you guys haven't killed each other" She said. "We're all pretty tired after walking today so we're going to try and get to sleep"
"We're going to do the same" Luke said. We had decided to change into more comfortable and warmer clothes at the restaurant to make our lives easier. Luke and I got out of the car and into the back. Luckily Calum and Mia had got pick up trucks with a proper enclosed back. Luke opened the back and put the tail gate down before hoisting himself up and then pulling me up as much as I protested. He then proceeded to lift the tail gate back up and close it before closing the other door as well. Mia and Calum had put an old mattress in the back of both cars along with pillows, duvets and blankets. I lead down and pulled the several layers over me, Luke doing the same. The covers kept moving every time we did. Soon Luke had them all to himself.
"Luke, ever heard of sharing?"
"Sorry" He mumbled and pushed some of the covers back onto me. He moved again and the same thing happened except this time he realised without me having to bring it to his attention. "Move closer to me" He said.
"No"
"Maddie"
"I need space"
"Move closer. It'll keep us both warmer anyway" I sighed and nodded, moving so there were only a few inches between us. He readjusted the covers and moved onto his side so he was facing me. "Better now?" I nodded and turned to face him. I could just about make out his face in the dark.
"Thanks" I mumbled, looking down at my hands on top of the covers.
"Maddie?"
"What?"
"You're really pretty in the moonlight. Makes your eyes sparkle"
"Cheesy but thanks"
"Welcome"
"How many times have you used that line on a girl?"
"Never. Believe it or not, I'm not really the moonlight picnic kind of guy"
"Really? That's the exact description I'd give you"
"Shut up" He said chuckling as he nudged me.
"Whatever"
"How come we're getting on well? We've never gotten on this well"
"Maybe because we've actually been paying attention to one another rather than just yelling and cutting each other off"
"Probably. You always seem to be right"
"I would say you're always wrong but I guess not all the time"
"That's the biggest compliment you've ever given me"
"That doesn't surprise me to be honest. I've been a bitch over the years"
"Like I said, always right" It was my turn to nudge him. "I'm kidding. Kind of. I've been a bit of a dick over the years too"
"We've both been shitty people when it comes to one another" He nodded and we fell into silence for a few minutes. I shivered, my body becoming too adjusted with the current low temperature and needing more heat again.
"You cold?"
"A bit"
"Come here" He said and I paused before moving closer ever so slightly. I looked down at my hands as I traced the patterns on the blanket. He lifted my chin up, making me look at him.
"You alright?"
"I'm fine"
"You sure?"
"This is just weird, that's all"
"What? Us?"
"Yeah, but it's nothing"
"Tell me"
"It's just weird being this close"
"I get that" Luke said, pushing my hair out of my face. "We should get some sleep" I nodded and got comfortable again. Luke pulled me closer, wrapping his arm around my waist like last night. "You were right, I was awake" He said and I couldn't help but smile before falling asleep.

CW: Contains mildly graphic scenes of violence/death, topics of unwanted pregnancy/abortion, scientific experimentation on sapient beings, depression/suicide, grief, and trauma. The tone of this fiction is often dark and distinctly dystopian in lighter shades of Margaret Atwood, though where there is darkness there is always hope and light. On Hiatus Until September When the School Year Begins and Mom This story takes a considerable amount of time and mental energy to complete. I thought I had enough backlog and time to post it as a serial while COVID kept my child home from school, but it turns out while I can quickly write other pieces, I cannot produce the quality I need with this one at an acceptable rate. We'll resume in September when my days are much freer. Thank you for your patience and stay tuned for a different storytelling romp more suited for a serial platform in the meantime.

Unfortunately, a dragon brought ruin to their home, eventually cornering the five blood brothers. Luz, the eldest brother, ignored the warnings of his ancestors for the sake of their survival. Using an ancient teleportation spell, he and his siblings were sucked into a portal leading to God-knows-where. In a foreign place far from home, Luz carries the burden of disobeying his ancestors and losing his younger brothers. He sets off to reunite his siblings and slay the dragon that destroyed their village while only being equipped with one useless space spell that drains all his mana after one usage. Author's note: English isn't my first language and this is the first novel I tried writing, which is why some of the earlier chapters aren't that good, even though I grew better over time. I'm still in the phase of editing a lot of my earlier chapters. But unfortunately, I haven't yet found any time for it. Daily updates are to be expected till we reach chapter 100. If your comment motivates me, I might upload up to five chapters.^^
