(Y/n)'s POV
A sword threatening to pierce my skin, my gaze no longer filled with the desire to live. What I had believed to be a fateful battle was shattered into nothing, breaking into a million shards of fragile glass.
My weak resolve broken and my will to continue living was no longer coated into an eternal dream. What was stopping this vampire from killing me? Did he want to savour the moment in which he would take my life?
"Why didn't you fight back?" he asked.
"I'm a human and you're a vampire. What are the odds that I can win against you?"
"That's not it. You looked as if you didn't want to live."
"Is there a point to all this? Just kill me. It's painful to wait."
He released his grip on my arm, his sword already sheathed. I stared at him in pure shock. Why didn't he kill me? Was I simply too hollow inside?...
His eyes were stern yet a subtle softness laid underneath. I picked up my own sword, not sure what I was going to do with it. It surprised me that I wasn't going to end my own life.
"Do you know Yuu?" he asked hesitantly.
"Why do you ask?"
"...nevermind. It's not important."
"He's just an acquaintance. We're not that close."
Within seconds, he had lunged towards me, pinning me to the ground. A distant gunshot could be heard, although I was certain that it had been aimed either at me or the vampire holding me captive.
His face was mere millimetres away from mine but his eyes were focused on something in the ruined buildings. I held my breath, waiting. Waiting for any sign of...I didn't know what. I just hoped that nothing bad would happen.

"One of your human friends targeted you. They're...snickering, laughing at how...pathetic you are," he exclaimed softly.
"That's not unusual."
"...why?..."
"Hmm?"
"Why is it normal to treat someone like this? Why do humans treat others so unfairly? Why did they take everything away from me?..."
His words were filled with so much sadness, so much hatred, so much...longing. I felt a pang of sympathy in my cold heart. I had always believed vampires were cruel, blood-sucking monsters.
"...why did you save me?"
"I was hoping to hold you hostage but it seems that that won't work," he replied, although it sounded forced.
"Hold me hostage? For what?"
"...it doesn't matter."
My heart stopped. A bullet had grazed his arm. They weren't going to stop until we were both dead. I struggled to get out from beneath his body. His grip tightened on me.
I yelped in surprise as he picked me up bridal-style, and jumped onto a nearby rooftop. The blood from his wound soaked his sleeve, coating it in a rich red.
"Y-you're hurt. You've got to stop saving me for no reason."
"'No reason'? Do you honestly not remember anything at all?" he asked.
"What are you talking about?"
"My name's Mika. Doesn't that ring a bell?"
Mika...Mika...Mika...my head started hurting like crazy. I held in a whimper, but was unable to hold back the tears that were threatening to fall.
"(Y/n), are you okay?!"
Mika held me against his body but I couldn't stop the overflow of memories, both full of happiness and pain. All those moments that I had wanted to remember and forget...
I was...an experiment, a vampire born in a lab. Mika had been my only friend, having been the only human who knew about my existence. I was created by vampires as a test subject for a mass produced weapon.

Of course it turned out to be a failure when I went out of control but even then, it was Mika that had brought me back to my senses. He had controlled the monster living inside my body...before the vampires took away my powers.
I was taken by the humans, where my memories were all concealed. I was forced to live under the pretentious fact that I was born human and from a normal family no less...no wonder everyone always ostracised me.
"M-Mika..."
"Do you remember me?!" he asked, hope in his now vibrant eyes.
"Everything's still a little fuzzy but I can remember you. Mika, that name. You're..."
"(Y/n), do all humans treat you so badly? I...was so angry when they took you away, when they took Yuu away. I hated them..."
"I-I'm sorry, I need time to gather my thoughts."
I stumbled out of his grasp, squeezing my eyes shut. My brain was a muddled mess, a blackhole now filled with too many obstacles that clogged the entrance.
I took a deep breath before I was roughly pulled to the side. This man...he was my trainer, but perhaps the term tormentor would be the more appropriate word to use.
"Jan (made-up character), what are you doing here?"
"(Y/n), you should know better than to trust these evil monsters. You're still a damn weakling," he replied coldly.
"No, he's not-"
"Shut up. I don't want to hear any excuses from you. This vampire is going to die by my hands."
I turned to look at Mika with large, frightened eyes. He showed no sign of what was on his mind. I hoped desperately that he would abandon me and run. He was alive and well, he couldn't die now.
"Mika, go."
"Oh? You know him? Well then, more of a reason to kill him," said Jan.
"No!"
I ripped my arm out of his death grip and held out arms out in front of the boy who I had forgotten yet now longed to be with. Jan pointed his gun at me but I didn't back away.
"Move or I'll shoot."
"No."
"I'll give you one more chance. Now do as I say and move."
"Mika, go."
"You wouldn't dare run away like a coward."
I felt a rush of wind as he ran towards Jan. My eyes were struggling to keep up with their fighting. It was too fast and I was panicking. Mika wasn't a monster but Jan would kill him without hesitation.
Moments later, Mika had stabbed Jan in the stomach, making him crouch over in pain and frustration. I didn't feel any sorrow for the man. He deserved it for how he treated me.
"Mika-"
His lips were on mine within seconds. It took me quite a while to process what was happening. I felt him lean in, his hand finding its way to my hair. My heart melted.
Without warning, his body slumped against mine. I felt blood on my hands, seeping through a gunshot wound on his back. Worry and anxiety crowded my mind.
"An eye for an eye...vampire..."
Those were Jan's last words. I struggled to control myself.
"H-hey, you're- drink my blood. That weapon shouldn't have been cursed, right? It can't. Please tell me you'll make it."
"D-don't cry..."
"You're going to be alright. I'm going to help you just like you helped me. So please, please..."
"S-smile...for me..."
I looked into his eyes, finding it hard to see with the tears blurring my vision. Despite everything I was feeling, I managed a smile...the first real smile I had done in a very long time.
"...you look...the best...when you smile...for me..."
"Mika!"

Children of Danu, People of Skill Book 1. (LitRPG/Gamelit)
Hi all, this is my first attempt at fiction ever. I'm sure it's awful, first attempts at new things usually are. Hopefully you can find something you like in it. I had a great deal of fun writing it. It's a basic Litrpg/Game, God sends you to a new world to do their bidding plot. I Know I did too much telling and not enough showing. I'm working on that. The underlying system is one haven't seen or done much. a full Point Buy system, like Gurps, Champions or the Hero system. After writing it a while, I see why folks don't do it. The record keeping is tedious. And once you start doing math in subsequent chapters, you can't go back and add more action, just because you dread redoing all the math. I've got about 80k words written in two "books" on the novel so far. I'm going to edit chapters and try to drop a couple a week till it's finished. Hopefully that will work for folks. I need to punch up the amount of action. I'll be working on that as well. Thanks, Cal-P.S> The cover art is one of the two CIrce Paintings By Waterhouse.
