(Y/n)'s POV
The rich aroma of the coffee brewing rose from the steam, mixing with the sweet flavours of the desserts and refreshments lined up in the glass cabinet. Pouring the coffee into a cup, I added a sprinkle of chocolate powder over the foam coating before serving it to a middle-aged man.
The swing of the glass door. A light, crisp chime. Facing the customers with a small smile, I was suddenly greeted with a ruffle to my hair. Prying the male's hand off my head, I looked up to see Yamato give me a slight grin.
"Yamato, you're all here."
"Of course. Riku wouldn't stop reminding us," he replied.
"What? I made a promise," Riku argued.
"Riku, you didn't have to come if you had a busy schedule."
"I think we should go take a seat instead of blocking the doorway," Iori cut in.
I followed them to their usual spot and took their orders.
"Well, we'll let you get to work. Maybe we can talk after?" Sogo suggested.
"Yeah, that's fine with me."
I headed back to start making their orders. While I was subconsciously concocting their preferred coffees, I found myself glancing at Riku every now and then.
He caught my gaze before winking. A blush crept up my cheeks, making me look back down to focus on my job. It was utterly and undeniably true that I had fallen for him but...he had reached a place far higher than I could ever reach...
Worries and fears clouded my mind. He was an idol, I was a barista. He was loved by millions of fans, I was just an average citizen. We came from two very different worlds.
Nevertheless, I was grateful that he was still friends with me, that they were all friends with me. Nudging my arm, Aya (made-up character) whispered in a tone quiet enough only for me to hear.

"Riku looks real good today, doesn't he?" she exclaimed.
"*blush* O-of course, they're all idols."
"Mind if I serve their orders? I really want him to notice me this time."
"S-sure thing..."
She remained oblivious to my love for the red-haired male and simply gave me a side hug before helping me with the desserts. I forced a smile, hoping it passed for sincerity.
As she headed over with their freshly-made orders, I couldn't help but look their way to see his reaction. She immediately took a seat next to Riku and flashed her signature smile that made every male swoon.
Her soft, hazel hair and golden eyes only complimented her with her flirting. Cute dimples and a high nose...everything about her was perfect. I stood no chance against someone that mimicked a goddess.
Trying to distract myself with wiping down the tables, I forced the tears away despite the fact that they were burning behind my eyes. A hand on my shoulder made me turn around.
"Mind if I talk to you outside?" asked Riku.
"Uh sure."
Aya gave me a defeated shrug before returning to work. She was upset, I could tell. I felt Riku's hand grab mine before he led me outside and around the corner.
He suddenly had his lips on mine, backing me up against the wall. He had an arm around my waist with his other hand in my hair. I gasped as he deepened the kiss.
Heat rushed to my cheeks, colouring it a dark shade of red. I hesitantly kissed back, afraid that this was all just a dream. This couldn't be a dream...could it?
Riku's POV
I pulled away, panting. She was too cute...her cheeks were a bright red colour, making me smile to myself. She was everything I could ever ask for.

The other waitress from before was pretty but she couldn't win my heart no matter how much flirting she attempted to do. I only had eyes for one girl and that girl was standing right in front of me.
Her lips were as sweet as honey. Although I was reluctant to admit, I had dreamt of the moment I would confess to her. She was making me feel strange and I didn't know what to do.
"R-Riku?..."
"...I-I love you."
"*blush* What are you saying?..."
She looked away from my gaze with an embarrassed expression on her face. I lifted her chin up before kissing her again. For some odd reason, this seemed to satisfy my desires for the time being...
I licked her bottom lip but she denied my request. So instead, I moved to trail gentle kisses down her neck. She gasped softly before I buried my face in her neck. She smelt of vanilla and coffee...it was so sweet...
"(Y/n), I love you. Be my girlfriend."
"O-okay."
"Ne, how long have you liked me for?"
"W-what kind of a question is that?!"
"I've liked you from the moment we first met. I've wanted to confess for a while but...I was afraid that you'd reject me. You're too innocent for me...I didn't want to make you uncomfortable..."
"Riku..."
"But even so, I wanted to make you mine."
"W-well, I've also liked you for a long time...but I didn't think you would ever love me."
"Why not?"
"You come from a very different world, Riku."
"Don't think like that. I don't like it when you do."
I pulled away to look at her. Placing a kiss on her nose, I reassured her of her worries. She was perfect the way she was, she didn't need to change. I wouldn't want her to.
"Hey (Y/n), I think..."
We both turned our heads to see Mitsuki standing shock still.
"*clears throat* I-I'm just here to tell you that your friend needs some help with the orders. Anyway, I'll leave now, seeing as how you two are busy kissing."
"Wait Mitsuki-"
"Should I tell the others what I saw?" he asked, a smirk visible on his face.
"Hey, you-"
"*laughs* I'm just kidding but seriously, don't do this in public."
"Well, I'm pretty sure you were one walking in on us..."
"Yeah but who knew you would be- you know what? I'll just forget about this."
He left before I could get in another word. I turned to look at (Y/n). A dark blush appeared on her cheeks, making me laugh.
"D-don't laugh," she exclaimed with a pout.
"Are you embarrassed?"
"S-shut up."
"Heh, you're fun to tease."
"Riku!"
I placed a deep kiss on her lips, happy when she kissed back without any hesitation.
"Let's go back inside."

After fighting a diseased ancient silver dragon, Oskar must solve a mystery that leads him halfway across the world in pursuit of answers. This story is based on a character from a tabletop roleplaying game. I realized that I'd spent quite a lot of time planning out his backstory, and decided to go ahead and write some of it down. Then I wrote more, and more, and realized that I had a lot more than any sane RPG player should write about their character...

ELIOT NESS FOR MAYOR is a short novel of magical-realist fiction, a stand-alone book in the Shantytown Cycle. Written for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), I will be posting revisions as I complete them and should be done by early 2022, though I am making major changes so the timing may be longer. This book is cross-posted on two websites: Wattpad and Royal Road. Both are reputable, high-quality sites. Do not trust this book on other websites. They "scrape" material from reputable sites, posting the stolen material as an original to lure users in, but contain links that include malicious code.
