(Y/n)'s POV
"*sigh* Ton, since when have you started to bring homeless girls into our care?" asked the blonde man.
"Hey, don't say that in front of her! She helped me. The least I can do is give her a place to stay," replied Ton.
"This place isn't even yours."
"W-well, just help me out, okay?"
"Come on, Vlad. Cut her some slack. So what's your name?" the grey-haired man asked.
"(Y-(Y/n)...(L/n)."
"(L/n)?!" they all exclaimed, clearly surprised.
"What's a member of the notorious (L/n) doing by herself in the streets at night? And to think Ton even said you were homeless..." Vlad said.
"'Notorious'?...I cannot blame you for thinking that way. I-it is...undoubtedly true that my family has been involved...with gangs but what they didn't realise was that that'd be the cause of their downfall..."
"Apologies for asking such a sensitive question but has your family gone bankrupt?" asked the man with hair covering his eyes.
"Yes...and as a result, my father sold me off to a man who was involved in human trafficking...but I managed to escape..."
The warmth of a hand on my shoulder made me jump, my eyes adjusting to the reality before me. The man smiled at me as I looked away from his playful yet gentle gaze.
"You're welcome to stay with us, miss. I'm Luke by the way."
"J-just (Y/n) is fine."
"I'm Vlad. That's Tauryu and Wayne."
The two named Tauryu and Wayne greeted me with polite smiles. Ton immediately clasped our hands together, much to my surprise. Her eyes sparked a fire, a light providing warmth for her close ones and danger for her enemies. What a strong girl...

"These four are all umbras but they're good. They're my friends so you don't need to worry," she exclaimed.
"T-thank you...you all are...the very first friends I have ever had...the first people to...show me such warmth..."
Tears brimmed my eyes but I didn't bother to resist as they stained my cheeks. Tauryu kindly passed me a handkerchief to which I gratefully accepted. I no longer held back my sobs as Ton embraced me.
"Thank you for saving me even when you were having a much harder time," she whispered.
~Some time later~
I stood outside the cafe, staring at the brightly illuminated moon in the distance. Stars littered the sky, their twinkles seemingly shining down on the city in an attempt to envelope it in a sense of safety.
The door to the cafe opened as Luke stepped outside. He held out his hand, a playful glint in his eyes. I only stared at him with a questioning look, unable to comprehend his intention.
"You aren't planning to sneak off with Miss (Y/n), are you?" Tauryu asked as he stood beside Luke.
"There's something I'd like to show her. Although I was thinking about going alone with her, you're welcome to come with us."
"Where do you intend to take her?"
"You'll see."
I hesitantly placed my hand on his before he pulled me along the dimly-lit streets as Tauryu trailed behind, seemingly out of concern. I timidly took hold of his hand, clearly catching him by surprise.
"How do you know about umbras?" Luke asked.
"...five years ago, I was saved by a werewolf."
"Oh? Do you happen to know his name?" asked Tauryu.
"N-no, he left before I had a chance to ask..."

"You don't seem all that bad, (Y/n). I find it hard to believe that you're the daughter of (F/n) (L/n)," commented Luke.
"I agree with him, Miss (Y/n)."
"...then you two clearly don't know me."
"No, we don't need to dig any deeper. You can stop yourself from becoming what everyone thinks you'll become."
"What an optimistic evaluation, Luke. Tauryu, do you think the same?"
"I can assure you that you will not become a monster...so yes, I do agree with him."
Looking down at the ground and away from the sky up above, I bit my lower lip. There was nothing that could stop my inner self from embracing its true nature. I was a killer by nature, a merciless killer.
Killing without any hesitation whatsoever...even if they were...people I knew. That was my everlasting curse. Escaping from the clutches of hell was just a fleeting dream; an unsolvable desire.
"We're here."
I looked up to find myself in a park. Gasping, I stared at the sight in awe...looking at the small fireflies and moonlit trees rustling softly in the gentle wind.
"This is beautiful..."
No one's POV
The girl walked around in wonder, a soft smile tugging at the corners of her lips. She crouched down, spotting a baby sparrow in the bushes. The way in which she carried herself casted an air of coldness yet there was a warmth that drew one in.
Luke and Tauryu had attached themselves to that very warmth, completely ignoring the danger she could be if she ever became a weapon. After all, the sweet smile she flashed towards them almost melted their hearts.
"You two don't mind if I keep this young sparrow until he's fully healed, do you?" she asked.
"Of course not. I'm sure he'll be able to keep you company when you're alone," Luke replied.
"Although I suspect you would never be left alone..." Tauryu commented quietly.
A bullet suddenly whizzed past the two men and into the girl's arm. She immediately put the sparrow on the ground before holding onto her injury.
"Who's there?!" Luke shouted.
"You think you can escape me, little girl."
A pudgy man entered the park, his face hidden by his hat. (Y/n)'s glare was enough to give both Luke and Tauryu a sense of unease as they looked away from her gaze.
"Your father asked for a hefty sum. You're worth quite a lot. No doubt men would love to have a taste of you but having that fighter blood in you, you'd also make a great servant in many ways," he exclaimed.
"Unfortunately for you, we will not let you lay a finger on her," Tauryu replied.
"Luke, Tauryu...I can handle him."
"But (Y/n)-"
"...I'll be fine."
With that, she got out her own pistol and aimed for the man's heart.
"No! Miss (Y/n)!"
She pulled the trigger. The bullet landed in the man's stomach. The girl herself was panting heavily, having found it hard to fight the monster within her mind.
"Next time, don't expect me to spare your life so easily," she said.
Luke and Tauryu both noticed the absence of her warmth and innocence, wishing desperately for her other self to return. Yet, such a wish seemed almost impossible...

CW: Contains mildly graphic scenes of violence/death, topics of unwanted pregnancy/abortion, scientific experimentation on sapient beings, depression/suicide, grief, and trauma. The tone of this fiction is often dark and distinctly dystopian in lighter shades of Margaret Atwood, though where there is darkness there is always hope and light. On Hiatus Until September When the School Year Begins and Mom This story takes a considerable amount of time and mental energy to complete. I thought I had enough backlog and time to post it as a serial while COVID kept my child home from school, but it turns out while I can quickly write other pieces, I cannot produce the quality I need with this one at an acceptable rate. We'll resume in September when my days are much freer. Thank you for your patience and stay tuned for a different storytelling romp more suited for a serial platform in the meantime.
