《On the Devil's Path {a SOA sequel}》chapter twenty-one

I watched McKayla disappear into the bathroom and waited for the water to start running before turning to Gemma. She had crossed her arms over her chest and was stomping her foot impatiently.
"Spill it Jackson. Tell me right now what the hell is going on." She demanded.
I shot a glance back at the bathroom and took Gemma by the arm.
"What are you doing?" She whispered.
I didn't say anything as I led her outside to the porch.
"I swear Jackson, I will kill this bitch-" I cut her off.
"She's pregnant mom."
A speechless Gemma was a rare sight. She opened and closed her mouth a few times before lighting a cigarette.
"Are you sure it's for real?" She asked me.
I rolled my eyes.
"Yes, I'm sure. Tara wouldn't lie about that." I said.
Gemma snorted.
"Yes she would. That bitch would do anything to get you back."
"Mom stop it! That's the mother of your grandchild you're talking about." I yelled.
She took a step back and blew out some smoke. I was shaking so hard that I had to sit down. Gemma sat beside me and put her hand on my knee.
"She was gonna have an abortion, mom. I couldn't let her do that." My voice was so low I didn't think she'd heard me.
"What are you gonna tell McKayla?" She asked softly.
I let out a shaky breath and ran my hands through my hair.
"I don't know. I've put her through so much already. This is gonna kill her."
Gemma stayed silent for a few minutes.
"Jackson, listen to me. The longer you put this off, the worse it will be for both of you. You cannot hide this from her. If you love McKayla at all you'll go in there and tell her and pray to God you don't lose her."
When she wanted to, Gemma could be a loving and understanding mother.
"God I can't believe you were dumb enough to hit it raw." She said, shaking her head.
We exchanged looks and she kissed my cheek. Gemma stood up and walked down to her car.
"Deal with this." She said as she got in the car.
I sighed and watched her drive away. I knew she was right. I needed to tell McKayla as soon as possible. She deserved to know the truth so she could decide what to do. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad as I think. Maybe we could work something out so that everyone's happy. Or maybe I would lose her forever.
Four cigarettes and a walk around the block later, I finally went back inside. Almost two hours have passed since Gemma left and McKayla was still in the bathroom. I took a deep breath and drug myself down the hallway. I swear it was like walking down The Green Mile to get to the bathroom door. I pressed my hands to the door and braced myself.

"Babe, can we talk?" I said through the door.
She didn't say anything. I knocked a few times.
"McKayla?"
I twisted the knob, but it was locked. For the first time, I noticed water slowly spilling out under the door. My heart dropped. Something was wrong.
"Baby, come on open the door." I called to her, my voice shaking.
I yanked on the door knob and banged on the door; anything to get McKayla to open it, but she didn't. I took a few steps back and kicked the door as hard as I could. It didn't budge. Something was wrong. Something was horribly wrong.
"Damn it McKayla open the door!" I shouted.
Still nothing. I swore under my breath and backed up again. This time when my foot connected with the door, it burst open. When I skidded into the bathroom, everything came to a screeching halt. All I could see of McKayla was her arm hanging over the side of the overfilled bathtub and the top of her head. There was a broken glass on the floor next to a small plastic bag. God, no.
I snapped myself out of it and ran for the tub.
"McKayla!" I screamed as I reached into the water.
I hauled her out of the water and onto the tile floor. My fingers found her pulse on her neck and I swore. It was barely there. Everything was spinning. I could hardly dial 9-1-1 because of my trembling hands.
"9-1-1, what is your emergency?" The operator said.
"I need an ambulance now!" I yelled.
"Sir, calm down. What's the emergen-"
"My girlfriend overdosed, she's barely breathing. Please hurry." I said, cutting her off.
I gave the operator my address and hung up. My next call was to Gemma.
I kept my fingers pressed to McKayla's neck to make sure she was still breathing. Her pulse was getting weaker by the minute.
"Baby please, please don't do this to me." I whispered to her.
It felt like hours before I could hear the sirens coming down the street.
"It's gonna be alright. You're gonna be alright." I said over and over to her.
I couldn't understand what happened. Where would she get the pills? Why would she want to kill herself? She seemed fine at the party.
The paramedics came in and I called for them.
"What happened?" One of them asked me as he crouched down beside her.
"I don't know, I just found her in the tub." I said.
They put a mask on her and started an I.V.
"What did she take?" The other one asked.
I shook my head.
"I don't know." I said.
They both looked up at me and for the first time noticed my cut. They looked at each other and stopped asking me questions.
"Dammit, we're losing her pulse. Get the defibrillator ready." One of the medics said.

I pulled on my hair and realized that I was crying. They hooked McKayla up to the machine and gave her heart a small shock. My stomach twisted and I felt like I was going to pass out when her body jerked with the current.
"Okay, we've got to take her now." The medics said as they lifted her onto the stretcher and started wheeling her out of the bathroom.
It took all I had to drag myself up off of the bathroom floor. I heard a Harley pull in and seconds later Opie came running in the house.
"Jax!" He shouted.
He saw McKayla being loaded into the ambulance and started asking the medics questions. They shrugged him off and he made his way to me.
"Jax, what happened?" He asked.
I fell into him and he had to hold me up.
"I don't know Op, I don't know. I found her in the tub." I managed to say.
He swore and shook his head.
"I saw the sirens and followed them here. I thought it was you." He said.
As the ambulance was pulling out, Gemma pulled in.
"Jesus Christ, Jackson." She said as she gathered me in her arms.
"Mom," I cried.
She ran her hands through my hair and tried to soothe me.
"What happened baby?" She whispered.
I pulled away and wiped the tears from my eyes.
"I found her in the tub. She was barely breathing. I don't understand." I told her.
Gemma looked from me to Opie.
"Go to the hospital, I'll stay here with the baby." She said.
I nodded and took her keys. Opie took them from me.
"I'll drive brother, we don't need anything to happen to you too." He said.
We locked eyes for a moment and I hung my head. Opie put his hand on my shoulder and squeezed.
"She'll be alright." He said.
The ride to the hospital was a blur. The next thing I knew, Opie was half dragging me into the ER. Tara was waiting at the front desk. My eyes met hers and she reached out for me.
"She's this way." She said.
The three of us half ran down a hallway where they were working on McKayla. They had her hooked up to all kinds of machines and monitors. My knees gave out and Opie had to hold me up.
"What are they doing to her?" I asked Tara.
She watched through the window for a moment before answering me.
"They're going to put a tube down her throat and into her stomach and pump it with charcoal to neutralize the effects of the pills." She explained softly.
I winced and held onto Opie tighter.
"Jesus." I choked out.
We were quiet for a while until the sound of footsteps coming down the hallway broke us from our thoughts. It was Hale.
"Bittersweet thing about being Deputy Chief, I get called in on all ODs." He said with a smug smile.
I clenched my fists and pushed away from Opie. He caught my arm.
"What do you want Hale?" Opie said.
"I need to talk to Teller about his girlfriend's overdose." He said.
Opie gave me a warning look, but I ignored it.
"Tell me Teller, what exactly do you do to ruin all the women around you?" He said with cocky grin.
I lost it. I pulled back my arm and punched him square in the jaw. Hale stumbled and backed up against the wall. I was gearing up for another hit when Opie put his arms around me.
"Easy Jax." He said calmly.
Hale wiped some blood from his lip and straightened himself up.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" I spat at him.
He didn't say anything else to me. He glanced at Opie and Tara before walking away. Opie shook his head and put his hands on my shoulders.
"You good?" He asked me.
I nodded slowly and let out a breath. Honestly, I did feel better. Not long after that, a doctor came out of McKayla's room.
"Are one of you family?" He asked us.
I nodded and Opie and Tara walked down the hall.
"Jax Teller, McKayla is my girlfriend. Is she alright?" I asked him.
The doctor sighed and glanced at her through the window.
"She's stable. If you wouldn't have found her when you did, she wouldn't have made it."
I hung my head so that he couldn't see the tears falling from my eyes.
"Does she have a drug problem?" The doctor asked gently.
I shook my head.
"No, she's never done drugs before."
"Well she definitely had enough in her system to kill herself." He said.
My God. I slammed my fist into the as hard as I could. There was a loud crack and a white light flashed across my eyes. The doctor flinched and took a few steps back.
"When can I see her?" I managed to ask him.
My voice was terribly hoarse from holding back tears. The doctor put his hand on my shoulder.
"Not for a few more hours. We'll let you know." He said softly.
Without another word, he left me alone in front of McKayla's room. I watched the nurses clean up the black charcoal off of her and dress her in a gown. From the window I could see that her hair was starting to dry. The nurses came out and left McKayla alone. Lying there alone in that room was the love of my life. The love of my life who just tried to kill herself; and she doesn't even know about the baby yet.

A Cleric's Life for me.
This is a casually written story loosely based on TTRPG games like DnD and Pathfinder. The attempt of the story is to have a slow growth in power and comical set of characters who eventually grow close and set off for more serious adventures. There will be plenty of familiars and funny tales that don't involve combat. The intention is not to be a goody-two-shoes cleric story where nothing bad happens. The intention for this story was a slow paced grungy story where everything seemed great at first and things just kept getting worse. I learned how shitty of a story that is to write and honestly I am just not good enough to get the idea down. I plan on revisiting it later.
