《My Mute Mate》Ch.11

I step out of the bath and grab a towel. I carefully wrap it around me, wincing as movement hurts my sore body. God, this sucks. I walk back into the bedroom and see the outfit laid out for me. Short shorts and a crop top? What on Earth? They know Im bruised right?
I sigh and go to Masons closet. I throw on some basketball shorts of his and a sweatshirt. I walk out of the room feeling much more comfortable in my own skin. I walk around the house and see a bunch of adults rushing around. I try my best to stay out of their way but tap one on the shoulder. He turns and looks at me.
"Hi. Where's Alpha Ralphs office?" I write politely and he looks annoyed.
"Down the hall to the left. Duh. Anyway, shouldnt you be at school?" He grumbles and walks away again. Seems like someone peed in his cereal this morning. Jeez. I walk down the hall and take a left like he said... To find thirty different doors. I run my hands over my face.
"He couldnt tell me which frickin door it was!? UGH!" I complain in my head and start to check rooms. The first door reveals an empty room that smells of sweat and tetosterone mixed with hormones that are off the charts and cologne. A teenage boys room. I close the door and walk to the next one to find a bunch of towels and sheets. I close that and walk to the next door and see two people getting it on. Ewwwww.... I close the door quietly but quickly and try to get that burned image out of my head. Gross gross gross gross!!
'Uggghhhh where is this stupid door!' Lisa groans as I open another door... To find a white room filled with art and paint. Cute. But not what I'm looking for. I decide to go into the middle of the hall and spin in a circle and choose a random door. I open it. Its another bedroom, but has a boy with peircings and a leather jacket listening to Breaking Benjamin and sitting on his bed. He looks up at me as I stand there in shock. He was crying but quickly wipes away his tears and his face turns hard and cool, like stone.

"Any special reason your in my room miss?" He asks coldly and I lift my whiteboard to write. He stands and walks over to me. He lowers the whiteboard and takes an up close look at my throat. His hands are suprisingly gentle as he moves my head around to examine my neck. I move his hands and him away in one swift motion while taking a step back. He goes from worried to angry in one swift motion and slams the door in my face.
Weirdest. Confrontation. Ever. I think to myself as the alpha steps out of a room down the hall. Something about his little half smile tells me he just saw the entire thing.
"Ah, Dove, cmon in." He greets politely as I walk over and into his office. I sit in a horribly colored dark green chair that is suprisingly very comfy. I grab my board and uncap my marker.
"So, how is your throat?"
"Hurts, but good. Its kind of a dull pain now."
"Thats good. Now, I assume your temporary accomodations are suitable?"
'Yes very much so, though the wake up call sucked." He laughs.
"Well I'll tell Sym to go even more overboard." I shake my head frantically and he laughs.
"Well, now for the hard stuff. Whats the story?" He asks, his face growing serious.
"Well... For some reason every body hated me. Then beat up on me. One day I decided to fight back... Aaannnd my brother slashed my throat at my mates (The Alpha) orders. Then I ran... And you know the rest." I write and he nods.
"Well, thank you Dove. Thats all. You can go sleep now." He dismisses and I leave. Im not that tired so I just wander around. I wander into a kitchen where some people are making cookie dough. One of the older ladies smiles at me.

"Hi dear. Would you like to help?" She asks and I nod hesitantly. She waves me over and has me start mixing the dough. As we work shes telling me stories of when she was my age.
"So.. You're either very very quiet or and extremely intense listener." She laughs and winks at me. I shrug and start putting the cookie batter onto the tray.
"Taking that as quiet then." She says and I shrug again. We put the cookies in the oven and I wave goodbye. I wander around before I end up back in Masons room. I flop onto his bed and crawl under the covers. I end up watching Dance Academy and passing out. I wake up to quiet humming and open my eyes. Masons standing there shirtless by his dresser on the opposite side of the room, humming to himself as he goes to undo his belt. My eyes go wide as I realize I just woke up to find him changing and can't do anything.
I panic as I try to find something to warn him Im awake. On instict I start snapping my fingers. He turns to look at me and looks surprised. He quickly redoes his belt and throws on a shirt, his face turning red, as mine is probably already a tomato.
"Sorry about that Dove." He says sheepishly and I shrug. He grabs his pajamas and then walks out to get changed somewhere else. I throw the sheet over my head as my wolf carefully critiques my image of a shirtless Mason.
'Hmm.. Fit, tannish so he probably has it off a lot-' She starts, but I cut her off.
Dude! Gross! I thought you liked Blake! I scold her. She rolls her figurative eyes.
'Yeah well we can still have fun here till we forgive him.'
Who said were gonna forgive him?
'Exactly. Perfect reason to be with Mason.'
No, Lisa! I yell at her but then she fills my head with pictures of Mason shirtless.
God youre worse than the internet! I yell again and put a pillow over my face to try and block out the images. Soon enough I fall back asleep with the picture of Mason climbing out of a pool etched in my mind.

The Humble Life of a Skill Trainer
For Joshua Still, Skills were the lifeblood of his business. He wanted to understand them, collect many of them, and teach a few of them. Which was a problem because while his profession of a Skill Trainer was perfectly legal, it was frowned upon by most of the kingdom. After all, it wouldn't do for a non-tailor to teach Tailoring. Or, so says the Tailors Guild. The same could be said by the Blacksmiths, the Bakers, the Butchers, the Candlestick Makers, the Mages, and every other Guild with enough money and clout to complain. But still, Skill Trainers provide a valuable service, and so he has managed to start his business and keep it under the table. To a degree. With many a bribe. But his quiet anonymous life of research, practice, and training was about to change. When the Baron demands you pay him a visit, you have little choice.

A Virtual Invasion
An invasion from another dimension is shut down by an Empire's traitor and the world has a scant few decades to build the strength to resist a multidimensional Empire. How will the world fair when no one even knows its doom is one barred gate away? Fortunately, the traitor has a plan. Maybe with a bit of luck and planning, he can build a force to defend the world without anyone realizing it. Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
