being canadian and dating canada's beloved connor mcdavid meant that you are surrounded by the sport of hockey, but you were accustomed to the sport even before.
you have been a lifelong hockey fan. being from erie, ontario meant that you were a leafs fan, that was switched when connor was drafted to edmonton. don't tell connor, but secretly you are still rooting for the leafs if they aren't playing the oilers.
you and connor met in high school while connor was playing with the erie otters. you guys sat next to each other in multiple classes. some of those classes were ones that you practically passed for him.
you guys would always bicker, but anyone around you knew that you guys were just utterly in love with each other. they weren't wrong because you and connor started dating senior year. you had traveled to sunrise, florida with the mcdavids to watch him get drafted.
now you lived with him in edmonton, newly graduated from university of alberta, and the years you've spent with connor have been the best of your life. you loved connor and the city of edmonton.
tonight, you were going to a game that connor had begged you to go to. usually you would not have to be persuaded to go to a hockey game, but this was an exception.
it was a battle of alberta game which meant it was nasty.
you didn't mind the fighting usually, but when connor was involved it was too much.
reluctantly, you agreed to go to the game after he made a point to add that leon draisaitl's girlfriend, celeste would be there. you missed her.
you guys were wearing matching outfits other than the name on the back of the orange jerseys.
you had gotten your drinks and were sitting in your seats, catching up on each other's life before the arena got loud.

the game started and it was like you thought it would be. hits every second. little scrums after every play. an unexpected fight from sean monahan and ryan nugent-hopkins (fight above because wow).
after andrew mangiapane laid a massive hit on kailer yamamoto, it felt like the whole team was going after him. kailer was the youngest and one of the smallest boys on the team and obviously they got to protect their boys.
in the last minutes of the third period, the players on the ice were all scrumming in the corner and andrew came up from behind connor and yanked him out of the group. they were the only people outside of the group in the corner.
"drop the mitts mcdavid." you read mangiapane's lips on the jumbotron.
"OH NO. CONNOR MCDAVID I SWEAR-" you yelled out.
his gloves dropped to the ice and the whole arena was quiet in shock.
celeste grabbed your hand as your other hand went up to your mouth.
they began to throw punches at each other, raising your worry more and more with each swing. it was an equal battle until connor took the lead and continuously was connecting punches. mangiapane was done and decided to communicate that by throwing connor onto the ice. obviously, connor was not prepared for that and his head hit the ice pretty hard.
you covered your eyes as you felt the tears well up.
he was helped off the ice and went into the locker room.
"okay. why don't we start going to the locker room?" celeste suggested.
you nodded uncovering your eyes. she held your hand for comfort as you walked down to the dressing rooms. you were hoping and hoping that connor was just fine, but the fear was still alive and well which was making the tears fall out of your eyes even faster.

"calista?" a older man said into the waiting area.
you looked towards celeste in wonder. she shook her head signaling she had no idea why and who that was.
you walked up to him with red eyes, "yeah that'd be me."
"oh yes. someone wanted to see you." he smiled.
you assumed it was connor.
you followed him into the trainer's room where connor was laying on one of the tables.
"oh calista, why are you crying?" connor said, sitting up.
"you scared me." you said, looking at the floor.
"oh baby i'm sorry. i'm all good." connor picked up your chin so he could look you in the eyes, "look at me. i'm fine."
you nodded as he wiped the tears from your eyes.
"don't cry please." he whispered.
"promise not to do that again?" you pouted.
"ummmm." connor hummed, "i'm sorry, but i can't guarantee anything." he smirked.
you rolled your eyes.
"look at these battle scars i got." he pointed at his cut, swollen lip and cheek, "these are awesome."
he smiled proudly as you rolled your eyes at him once again.
"oh real badass mcdavid."
